Sitting with the home fans at an away game 14:15 - Jan 11 with 10721 viewsTractorgirlforever

Has anybody ever bought tickets for an away game but had to get the tickets with the home fans as there were no away tickets left?. Has there ever been trouble or do you just have to keep very quiet!

Few irons placed in the fire ready for games that this might be needed nearer the end of the season.

And I’d stand in silence, clap if ‘home’ team score, and if we were to score I’d probably shout ‘fcksake’ in joy… the locals would never know…

Was that the Sudbury bus? Mrs Basuco was on that and they diverted to that game, QPR called off due to fog I think she said? She went straight to the West Brom end tho, wouldn't mix with budgies.

We got on at Stowmarket, so might have been the same bus or two smart drivers not wanting to give refunds!

Yes it was horrendous. Sat two rows back behind the goal at Carrot Road, some supplier thought it was a laugh to get us seats there.

Stood up in excitement as Kiwomya nearly scored, then sat down quickly then had to stand up when they scored in the risk of getting bashed if we didn't. Must of been early 90s.

Brentford away, with my Bees supporting bro-in-law. Resolved to stay quiet...15 seconds later, Murphy scored and I was up and loud. Old boy(with his dad in a wheelchair) gave me dogs abuse thereafter, despite my satirical polite applause every time we scored after that. Good day out!

Did England away in Slovenia when Jack Wilshere hit two worldies in a 3-2 win. I had to celebrate the winner no problems at all.

I'm in the home end for Oxford. I will be respectful.

See you there!

I never ever got tickets in the away end for 40 years of going to away games. I was threatened twice at Spurs and walloped at Elland Rd. personally I recommend avoiding the Ipswich end - you can come and go as you please and it’s great fun hearing the opposing fans moan - or talking to them if there is no danger of getting slung out - which strangely is more of a risk now than in the bad old days.

Nodge 92.. that was an experience!

Yeah, me too. I was a nipper with my Nodge supporting mate. I was so scared of the Norwich fans that I don't recall it being a pleasant experience, to such an extent that I'd even forgotten we won!

Bristol Rovers away back in 1991.

3-3.

Hard work as we went 3-0 up.

No, but I have bought a Norwich fan into the lower north stand for Ipswich Vs Norwich. The one where Darren Bent scored the "offside" rebound penalty. Him trying to contain himself when Norwich went 1 up was tricky. Were were doing GCSEs, so maybe 16 at the time.

Did it at Wimbledon last season. All good and managed to get pix of my son with the Ipswich players as they came off at the end.

Biggest problem is buying tickets when we’re the opposition. The home clubs are well aware our fanbase will try to buy tickets in the home ends.
If you haven’t got a purchase history, a lot of clubs let you buy them, then cross ref with our database and refund the tickets if they think you’re an Ipswich fan.
People think it’s done on postcodes (and that clearly is a giveaway) but it’s not. They’re looking for purchase history.

Must make it harder nowadays if you’re a neutral wanting to complete the 92. You must have to pick games that no one wants to see.

Yes years ago me and mate sat with West Ham fans and kept very quiet and sang a lot of Hammers songs! Not the best way to view a match

The biggest mistake I ever made at football was to somehow get into the Holt end at Villa Park in 81 (3 days after we lost semi final) We won but I dare not make a sound I seemed to have been surrounded by thousands of grunting animals!

Sat in the river end at Norwich once and celebrated when we scored. But I was younger and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't do it now.

Think it's best to just sit neutral or someone may take offense.

Did it at Chelsea just before we got relegated. We barely crossed the half way line and chelsea won 1-0 at the with a longdistance strike. The Chelsea fans were mostly day trippers so didn't notice I wasn't celebrating with them.

Have done it in reverse. I deliberately sat in the Wolves end at Portman road because I hated them. (A wolves fan threatened to throw me off Portman road bridge when I was only about 14 years old)
We scored literally from kick off and I went berserk. They were not impressed but I never got moved or thrown out.

I've only ever done it at Priestfield (04/05?) and London Road (09/10?) but wouldn't want to do it again. Not particularly hostile environments, but I just couldn't enjoy the matches undercover. I'm too invested in the game that I forget where I am - would be a crap secret agent.

Probably doesn't help that we didn't win either, although I think I would have been kicked out if we had. Not for me.

Because of the size of grounds in this division I've been with home fans at Exeter (this season) and Accrington and Shrewsbury last year. I don't live in Suffolk any more and when I'm asked for my postcode it's not obvious whom I support.
I manage to sit on my hands if we score and I don't wear a Town shirt.

Sat in The River End for Norwich away, December 1992.
Got head butted at half time in the toilets.
Stayed on to celebrate and cheer our two glorious second half goals in the two nil win.
God, I was crazy back then!

I was there in the River End in 1992 along with a couple of hundred ITFC who only really showed themselves when the second goal went in. Went nuts.

I got chased off ‘the Shelf’ at White Hart Lane, trouble at West Ham too. Sat in with the Arsenal fans but never went on the North Bank. Scared to death at Millwall, Chelsea was iffy, no problems at the rest of the grounds in the south. I was in the away end at Portsmouth and that was unpleasant enough.

Been in with the home fans at quite a few places back in the day. The rule was basically no colours, keep it down. Frustrating but necessary for a decent day.

Edit: the most recent was a Charlton v Sunderland game a few years ago. I was with my Mackem mate in with the Charlton. Somebody twigged his accent and we were promptly marched out - to the away end which is where he wanted to go in the first place and couldn’t get a ticket.

I could never do it, especially not now in the days of iFollow. The thing that sets the match going experience apart from watching a stream is being among the Town fans going nuts when we score. Each to their own of course but for me it would defeat the object of going - I’d much rather celebrate a Town goal myself at home rather than sit on my hands and pretend to be disappointed.

The game I'm thinking of is probably later. I remember scowcroft getting a bad injury and being stretchered off.

I can actually take this a stage further. My teenage son is a Villa fan and I have twice sat in the away end with them at PR.

A pretty awful experience - Villa won 4-0 the first time and told my lad to keep it shut after the game as we walked back to the car. Imagine getting chinned by a Town fan for your gobby son…

I was with him in the home end at Villa Park in our season ticket seats when Emyr Hughes got his last minute winner.

Other than that I have done it many times over the years, including River End at Norwich several times , Everton, West Ham and Watford. Best if you’re alone or you trust your companions not to do something stupid.

Be respectful and you don’t generally get any problems.

Norwich three or four times. Quite a few of us got escorted pitchside to the Ipswich section just before kick off. Would have been late '70s.
Birmingham once in front of a very small crowd.
Maine Rd with some Citeh supporting mates in the main stand, wore colours and got dogs abuse but nothing physical. We lost 4-0.
Bramall Lane, by mistake. Kept very quiet.
Highfield Rd in a ZDS cup tie as it was pissing down and blowing a gale. Friemdly bunch tbf.
Charlton when they played home games at Upton Park. No issues.
Last time was Brighton at the Amex. Won 2-0. Went a bit nuts for the first goal and some old fella called me a c##t a few times. Had two stewards sat with me for the rest of the game and was told to button it so did so when the second went in. Still have no idea why i wasn't escorted out, but BHA kept sending me ticket information for a couple of seasons.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

If you get tapped up, can’t you just say you’re a neutral come to watch a game of football?

Aren’t neutrals allowed these days?

Twice.

Corporate at Villa Park a couple years ago, when we went down - Sears scored an absolute screamer, loads and loads of 'posh' Villa around us giving us a lot of abuse. BlueStreak was invited on the same bash, randomly, sound bloke.

Also Southend under Lambert just before COVID - Town fans away behind the goal to our left, my missus's dad stood up every time we scored (we won 3-1) and somehow managed to spontaneously end up shouting abuse at the Southend defenders. We got away with it.

I wouldn't recommend either experience.

Me and one other (who you will probably know) went in The Matthew Harding stand when we played Chelsea in the FA Cup - 6 or 7 years ago????

For a laugh we agreed to stay silent but cheer a goal if we scored, which we did - and the place went nuts and we got kicked out.

Cracking day out all in all though.

Me and mate were in the side stand that day, his uncles mates were all Chelsea ST holders and not using the tickets so we sat in there.

Spoke with this absolute lump at half time, old school Chelsea, thankfully we were about 4-0 down and he had no issue us being there 😂

We’ll be good again... one day

I just have a real problem keeping quiet!. I do it without realising it. I sat in the cobbold for the first time recently as couldnt get a ticket in the magnus and it was so damn quiet!.. it made me aware of how much i talk throughout a match because im all i could hear!
