12,443 attendance at Oakwell on Saturday, 1,496 Pilgrims… 09:18 - Mar 13 with 3283 views | unstableblue | Had to double check that crowd! You’d think Barnsley would have way more backing given the importance of the game, their form and automatic credentials. We had 29,069. Suspect we may be about to get 27k for Shrewsbury. Different level of fan base.

Fierce competition too with Sheffield just up the road, and surrounded by other league clubs. Our support this season is incredible, almost a freak event, but we are not in an area packed with other clubs.

Yeah, this, basically. So many other clubs around Barnsley, most of who are doing better.

We are also not in a densely populated area, so it's swings and roundabouts.

Sheffield up the road one way, Leeds the other, Rotherham, Huddersfield and Bradford encircling them too. I imagine if we were similarly hemmed in we wouldn't get anywhere near the level of support we do.

With so many neighbouring clubs Barnsley’s catchment area is pretty small (population 244k), as you point out. Given that, I think their attendances are pretty good. We are lucky in that while Ipswich itself is pretty small, the population of Suffolk is 760k and our reach goes into Essex and further west plus exiles like myself so potentially 1m plus? When it comes to it, it really doesn’t matter. Burnley’s population is about 94k and they’ll be in the Premier League next year. It’s all about the club and the team. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That's a big part of the reason why Evans & Gamechanger both saw Town as an investment with potential. A decent fan base & no local competition. Getting nearly 30,000 in Division 3 clearly shows that.

Plymouth seem a really well supported club to be honest. Just smaller. Not sure we need to take pop shots at other teams attendances. We don't have to go back far to look at our really poor attendances. Bloody lovely to see the change though. Let's focus on us! We're absolutely bouncing as a fan base right now. Long may it continue
12,443 attendance at Oakwell on Saturday, 1,496 Pilgrims… on 19:22 - Mar 13 with 1275 views | NeedhamChris | This is 'participant' level stuff - if this was a Norwich fan we'd be asking if they wanted a trophy and deriding them. It's obviously great to see our attendances improving, but the regular posts on it is a bit cringe worthy.
