Really starting to find a number of people whose views I should align with (both on here and offline) to be quite alienating.
When it comes to people on here who are more openly left wing vs those that are right wing - the majority of the abuse, snobbery and entrenchment in views seems to come from this group. This doesn't seem to match up with the virtues that are supposedly at the centre of their politics. Whereas whilst I often disagree with some of what I read from the likes of GB and Lowhouse, their arguments are politely put forward and explained rationally and are a much more enjoyable conversation than those that I would agree with.
Why is this? I find it to be quite unedifying and the more I see of it - the more I feel like the left isn't for me. If I (as a Green party member) find it unappealing, where does that leave those minds we're supposed to be trying to change? |  |

That's not what I said at all. My views are left leaning also, I've not referred to any views at toxic whatsoever. I often agree with the views, but the approach is toxic.
The toxicity I'm referring to is the manner of the debate, the name-calling or mockery instead of any form of engaging in opposing viewpoints.

I disagree.
On this site over the couple of days there have been a fair few right-leaning posters who seemed to support the response of some Dubliners to those awful stabbings. And their support for those far-right groups wasn’t exactly subtle. Over the years there has been posters such as Benters, Dreadlocks, Taximan etc etc who used abuse to score points - and then claim to being bullied. You also have some right leaning posters who are disingenuous to the point of ridiculous. So it all depends on what you see and what posts you have read. I’d argue that a lot of the deliberatly incendiary posts are right-wing in nature but get deleted quite quickly.
On a national level it’s the top-heavy right-wing press that sets the agenda but for some reason they blame left-wingers as the mainstream liberal establishment. They are quick to name call and to blame everything that they don’t like as wokism. But they are very good in using the media in amplifying their message whereas, being liberal is viewed in a negative light by ‘Mail’ etc.
I dont think toxic debate or whatever it’s called is top-heavy foe lefties - it’s just easier to identify by having a national media call it out more than the abuse of these polite righties. |  | | |

Bit late to this one as I’m just back from my veggie lefty meal of Roast cauliflower and butternut squash, sticky coconut rice, spiced Thai butternut squash sauce. But funny to see [redacted] has re-activated Lord Snooty, Rosa Luxembourg, Triggs and Wat Tyler in order to boost the down votes.
