Town Targeting Crystal Palace Striker
Town Targeting Crystal Palace Striker
Thursday, 26th Nov 2009 13:38

Town are trying to secure the loan signing of Crystal Palace striker Stern John before today’s 5pm deadline, according to reports in south London. The 33-year-old previously played for Roy Keane at Sunderland.

The Trinidad and Tobago international has played for the Eagles only seven times since joining them in the summer after undergoing elbow surgery in August. He is yet to score this season.

Having played for Malta Carib Alcons in his home country, John moved on to the Carolina Dynamo, the New Orleans Riverboat Gamblers and Columbus Crew in the US before relocating to England with Nottingham Forest in 1999.

Since then the 5ft 11in tall frontman has played for a long list of clubs, largely at Championship level: Birmingham City, Coventry, Derby (loan), Sunderland, Southampton and Bristol City (loan), before joining Palace in the summer on a free transfer. He has made 109 appearances for his country, scoring 69 goals.

In eight months at Sunderland under Keane between January and August 2007, John scored five goals in 10 starts and six sub appearances, helping the Black Cats to win the Championship. Overall in English football, John has scored 97 goals in 250 starts and 105 sub substitute appearances.

On Tuesday Keane revealed he was looking at bringing in two loan players by 5pm today, one of which was a striker from a club outside the Premier League.

Why sign Stern Journeyman when you let Haynes go, Lisbie go, Rhodes go & you bought Priskin for £2mil. It's hardly planning.

naa i don't come on here to tell others to just post postive i don't like the postion we are in and neither do you as well.

But if everyone went around saying negative things and nothing postive then what hope would we have to do anything in the season or any other season

To CGS what a surpise a negative post at least naa gives a nice reponse to someone unlike you and you wonder why you are hated work it out for yourself CGS and look over other comments you made and you might see why people don't like you much

Reading many of the depressing adverse comments written on this site today I am left wondering what the real definition of supporter is, I'm sure that Roy Keane is doing his best against the 5pm deadline.

Forgot to comment on this for CGS previously on what he asked me

" So tell me your happy to be linked with a 33yr old has been from palace?????????????? I want you to answer that as well."

I am not over the moon with this but if he comes as i have stated previously i will back him just like any other signing who comes to this club and if he don't work out then it is not a good signing but we don't know this yet do we before he is here and has had a few games for us.

Bluearmy: fair enough. I'm getting a little out of hand these days. Too much going wrong all over.

I guess what I meant is that Dobie posted a positive post that made a lot of sense, but your posts tended to just be telling the moaners to stop moaning.

All criticism, positive or negative, should be constructive (are you listening CGS?).

roytheboy: I guess it is rather depressing but I really really dislike it when people suggest those that have negative opinions aren't fans. They are. Get over it. Being a fan does not have to mean you love the manager and agree with everything he does. Some are happy to trust in him regardless and others aren't.

Would be a great signing. Great age for a quality striker. Fantastic score record. Hope it happens. Just what we need for rest of season.

Good comment by Dobbie73 - agree. Also, Stern John is a good all round type forward - assuming his legs haven't gone.

naa i get your point i do post postively and it may come across alot i admit and i respect people's views both postive and negative if put as you said constructively.

But what annoyes me is that if you get any postive news for this club there is always someone like CGS posting something negative when there is no need at all to.

If someone posted the way you do naa then i would not have a problem with CGS or anyother people person with the same view point but i am afraid this is not always the case

We need a bit of muscle up front, so what if he is slow, he will still give us a few more options and goals(hopefully).

Let's not get carried away - this is a report - but surely anyone would be better than we have? Stead, Pablo, Wickham, Walters and Priskin have all been given several chances this season, but have failed to produce the end product. If John does arrive and scores a couple of goals, he will have done better than some of the others we have.

I am afraid we can not afford a world class striker and I don't believe Defoe is available.

He is of similar Build as "Parkin" for Preston, and he is still knocking them in.

Quality player.

I thought we should have signed him in the summer, but instead he went to Palace. He's always looked a threat when we have come up against him.

Another player like that who I wouldn't mind, is Clinton Morrison. However, I just feel he wont be available!!! Also the likes of Dele Adebola, Alan Lee, and Patrick Agemang could be good.

So what is he used to pay for Roy Keane as least he will know his temperament and attitude. John always seems to score against us but then many strikers do. I think it is worth a punt and will work nicely financially if Palace are still in dispute with us over the Lee transfer payment. Nothing to lose as the strikers we have are not doing it. I wish people on here would stop moaning about everything. I am not happy in fact my life is in misery at the moment at the plight of my team but we have to be realiastic in who we can bring in.

David Healy is the latest on EADT or Daryl Murphy. Pretty sure these are unfounded and usual rumours we would be expected to be linked with (i.e. Sunderland). Given Keane said he was looking outside the Prem gives more substance to John being more likely. Plus Bent & Jones are out for a few weeks!
Would prefer Healy without a doubt but can't see it at all. Murphy can stay and rot in the ressies after turning us down earlier in the season.
Please have some good news before 5:00! - 1 hour 50mins and counting....

Im happy to hear we're being linked with strikers but i dont think this is the right direction for the club, he's scored 26 goals in 4 years, 19 of those in 1 decent spell for Southampton that to me is not a great record, i just dont think he would score the goals we so desperately need, and everyone is right we arent going to be able to attract world class players but we can certainly do better than Stern John

If Palace still owe us money why dont we try and get Ambrose again now he has found his form ,he is scoring a lot in this league this season . Cannot see John scoring more than Stead or Priskin ,but until he is here and given a go we will not know .

focusblue added 15:23 - Nov 26
I would have liked to have seen a striker like Kevin Philips a proven goal scorer in this league come to portman road, but with the position were in we just wont attract decent strikers !!!

I wonder who will be for the axe if we do get another striker in on loan. Everyone has been in and out of the squad this season but will surely mean someone departing (if not on loan before 5:00 then in the Jan window) or being left out in the cold.
Can't see it being Priskin with the money spent, Pab's gives us something different, Wickham ain't going anywhere (please!!!) so most likely Steady???

Also be interesting when Luca is back whether Walters is put back up top or whether Roy will have to drop Edwards to keep him wide right

bedsitfc added 15:32 - Nov 26
oh!!!!!!! i was hoping for someone like bernard. not a proven 10 goal a season player the likes of bernard could be a 20+ a season

depressed: not sure what you mean. It's a very minor nitpick whatever your point is! Considering the general inability to type that some posters on here have it seems a bit churlish to pick me up on that.

Mind you, having said that I think some on here do trust in Roy regardless. And by that I mean regardless of our current situation.
