Town are being linked with a move for Celtic left-back Lee Naylor. The 29-year-old is out of favour at Parkhead and with his contract up in June is likely to be available for only a small fee.

Bloxwich-born Naylor started his career with Wolves for whom he made more than 300 appearances between 1997 and 2006, prior to joining the Bhoys for £600,000.

Despite having played in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Falkirk, Naylor has generally been out of Tony Mowbray’s plans since he took over from Gordon Strachan at Celtic and the 5ft 10in tall former England U21 international is expected to be amongst a number of players leaving in January.

Greek club Kavala have also been linked, but Naylor is understood to prefer to remain in the UK.

Naylor wasn't involved in the recent Celtic-Rangers game watched by Blues boss Roy Keane.

Elsewhere, Birmingham City midfielder Damien Johnson is also claimed to be a Town target, although the Blues seem unlikely to look at signing another central midfielder in the transfer window. Northern Irishman Johnson, 31, is reportedly surplus to requirements at St Andrew's.

Meanwhile, Hertha Berlin are considering offering a deal to former Town loanee Moritz Volz. The full-back has been without a club since being released by Fulham in the summer, having recently failed to win himself a contract during a trial at Schalke 04.

Lee Naylor was always fairly solid for Wolves i would be fairly happy to see him down here, although David Wright has done a sound job at left back

no better than what we have...

Would be a good signing if this is true and not just more tabloid gossip. Would rather him than McEverly, we need a left back as we only really have one in Thatcher and it's unlikely we'll see him pull on the blue shirt again. Delaney signed as LB but it's clear he's a better CB and Smith and Balkestein have played there but they're also CB's. Peters and Wright have done well but you can't beat have the correct footed player for the posistion.

Let's not beat about the bush, we don't need a goalkeeper, defender (for once i am happy with our central defenders), or a midfielder.
we need a golascorer - we need to spend a couple of million on that Billy Dane fella that's getting rave reviews very week.

He would be a great addition, I always thought we should sign him even when we where in the Premiership, hes loyal, hardworking, a neat footballer ect. not something you get in the 2nd tier these days.

Jabber, you're right we do need a striker, an out an out goalscorer as we only seem to have supporting forwards at the moment. But we do need a left back too, as far as I can see, these are the only two posistions we need to fill and maybe bring in a left sided midfielder on loan (Halmosi has been previosly linked) as it doesn't look like we'll be seeing Civelli again this year.

Sign him up, good player.

If we can get him cheaply I think Naylor could be a useful signing, as we are lacking a true left-back with Thatcher out in the cold. It would be rather harsh on D.Wright however, as the D.Wright-Delaney-McAuley-Rosenior defence is the best I have seen for a long time. Getting Rosenior on a permanent deal would seem sensible, presumably we can do this without paying a fee now that he is in the last 6-months of his Reading contract?

As has been much commented on, our priority has to be a striker. Coventry have the likes of Morrison and Best, and if we had players of that level up front I am sure they would score loads with the service from our improving midfield.

I certainly don't disagree with those who say he'd be a good signing and lets face it if we can get him on the cheap then why not!

Having said that I still agree with others more that what we need right now is a proven goalscorer. £2 million on a good quality striker who will guarantee a return of about 15 for the rest of the season. Christ as much as we dislike them, Norwich have three players this season in Martin, Hoolahan and Holt with nearly 50 goals between. Norwich would be nowhere without them.

Not that I'm saying that they would be able to play a league above, that remains to be seen, however what Norwich have right now is something we so desperately need to propell us up the table.

Interesting that Mark has mentioned Clinton Morrison. He would be a good addition to our squad and given Coventry's financial problems I don't think it would take a huge bid to get him. His finish on Saturday shows what he is capable of and I can understand his frustration as he was having to drop so deep to get involved. With Leadbitter, Norris and Garvan supplying him he could be just what we need.

what about Cardiffs financial woes - £3 mill should get us Chopra!

I'd not want to upset the apple cart too much but Naylor at £600k has to be good business? With Smith & Pim not making that role their own this year, Wright has switched and done well - that's my only doubt. I'd rather see the 600k added to the striker fund to land and Chopra or a player of that quality

am i the only one who thinks there are better forwards out there for less money than chopra??
holt up the road
morrison at cov
tudgay at wednesday
blake at wolves (not getting many games this year)
chopra will score but we would be paying an inflated price for that so i would rather bringing in someone else even from a lower league but who has a real hunger

Is McCormack still with Cardiff, I have a strange feeling they would rather keep Chopra. Don't know about McCormack because I haven't heard his name in a while, possible injured or just not doing well?

I agree we need a striker but this article is about a left back, Naylor would seem to fit the bill and provide good cover, sign him up Roy!

Blueknight85 added 14:40 - Jan 18
none of those strikers have any incentive to sign a contract for us half way through this season given where we are and 1 or 2 players would have to be sold first b4 we could splash 3 million on anybody given the amount of players we have on the books i wouldnt expect to see any new striker in untill the summer when deals are more easilly done and certain strikers wont be sacrificing a possible promotion to help us get in the top half

o yea and naylor is a very god left back and we do need one as we dont have any.
we only really have two playable fullbacks on any side rossenior and wright
if 1 of them is out fr any reason we have no "natural" cover and naylor would be strong competition for the position rather than just a bench warmer so would be a great signing

BlueBoots added 15:43 - Jan 18
A sensible signing that'll bring balance to the squad: Naylor L-B, Rosenior R-B, D. Wright can play either side, and Peters can play bloody anywhere! Hopefully we won't see Delaney, Pim or Smith at left-back again...

As for all the striker talk, with Stead, Pablo, Priskin, Wickham, Lisbie and John on the books at the moment, I doubt we'll see anyone come in unless we offload someone first.
