Stead Turns Down Coventry Move?
Stead Turns Down Coventry Move?
Saturday, 13th Feb 2010 09:13

Striker Jon Stead has turned down his loan move to Coventry City, according to some of this morning's papers, although reports elsewhere claim the former Sheffield United man's switch is still in the balance.

The 26-year-old was due to continue talks with the Sky Blues yesterday regarding a loan move with a view to a permanent switch in the summer.

Coventry boss Chris Coleman was hoping to have Stead in his squad for today’s game with QPR but the former Fulham manager was unable to persuade the ex-England U21 international to join his club in time to be involved against Rangers for the second time in a week.

Reports in Coventry claim Stead is still considering whether to make the move having asked if he can think about the switch over the weekend.

Good. He can still do a job here, unless Keane has something up his sleeve.

Good - not sure why people think that Pablo is the answer if others get injured - stay and fight for your place Stead....

Lunacy to send one of our strikers on loan to a relegation rival, John 'common-sense' Stead rescues the situation.

Although, I wouldn't have been disappointed if he left (for reason posted yesterday; he's a high wage earner, it was the only offer on the table i.e. no interest in Pablo). However, it is good to see he is prepared to stay and fight for his place. I don't think he is prolific enough - people keep going on about he's our joint leading scorer - well yes, but he has only scored six goals!

Still his committment is clearly there so good luck to him.

well it seems unless Real madrid come knocking our strikers who warm the bench are happy to stay here , Pablo could and should have gone , now Stead. I prefer stead any day to pablo but looks like Jim loaded them up with so much cash they cant get anything like it elsewhere.
Im suprised Stead didnt take the opportunity to get 1st team action, but anyway its done now .
Coventry are after Hulse now , tried a loan and that was turned down , but will try and buy him in the Summer.

Hmmm. Can't make my mind up about this player.
Has potential but potential don't win games!!

If he's serious and wants to fight for his place then good luck and let's see the results. If he's hanging around here coz the money is easy and it's less hassle then shame on him!
Only time will tell.

Very happy that Stead has decided to stay; Murphy looks the part at the moment, but with Priskin and Lisbie out on loan, Healy looking a bit off the pace, Pablo not being the most reliable, and Wickham so inexperienced, I think we would have been left very short of options up front if he'd chosen to go.

I actually think if RK ran with a front 3 of Murphy - Stead - Walters for a few games, we'd soon fly up the table...

Thats a bit of an arse , becuase now RK cant bring in his 2target" , who Im led to believe is Chopra. Cardiff cant affiord to keep him , the player wants to join us but we cant get him until a senior striker goes out 1st.

We are stuck with two over compensated forwards it seems. Neither are good enough to get us anywhere, but at least one tries his best.

UPDATE: EADT are reporting that Stead is still thinking the move over and has requested 48 hrs to think it through. He may still go!

People need to realise that we have to reduce the wage bill. Agree with another post - Jim gave Pablo and Jon big contracts. We can't afford for these players to be warming the bench. No offers on the table for Pablo - hence why he hasn't gone anywhere. We have to take what we can get!

Stay put Steady - you're a good player, a trier & definitely under rated/appreciated. Get rid of Martin, Thatcher etc before loaning out our leading scorer duh!

Cant decide on this one (rather like Steady)
He is undoubtedly a good squad player to have but at the sane time not a big loss if he went. I think it all depends on who Keane is trying to get in. The only reason to loan out a player like Stead is to reduce wages to ge the new guy in. If the new boy is someone like Chopra then i'd be gutted stead hasn't gone however if the target is Rob Hulse-esk then no point in swapping like for like strikers.

IMO Pablo has been a great servant but woud definitly be my choice of our strikers to get rid of (as well as Lisbie obviuosly).

Bottom line lets wait to see if we can find out Keanes target before critisising any decision because if it is a Chopra like player then everyone will be singing Keanes praises.

COYB!

Retroblue, that's absolute bull. You're saying whether we get Chopra or not is down to Stead going on loan? Utter nonsense. If Evans is paying out serious cash for Chopra (which he'd need to to get one of the divisions most prolific scorers) he's not going to worry too much about the comparitively small wage-saving of Stead going on loan.

Great News if he Steady stays. He has goals in him and was our best striker until his sending off and subsequent suspension.

Steady has given us good service to the best of his abilities and has every right to do what suits him. After all, we gave him a contract. I would be happy if he stays.

Like Counago in the summer, Stead has a contract and is well within his rights to turn down a move if he does not feel it is for him. I know he found some goalscoring form before his suspension and that is the main business for a striker but his all-round game is not quite good enough for me and his ineptness in the air for someone of his size is so frustrating. Like Counago before him, this is is big indication that Keane does not really see him in his long-term plans and I would not expect him to be here next season anyway. If I had to choose between Stead and Counago, Stead would win every time. Despite Counago's technical superiorty and flashes of brilliance he simply has no guts for the fight. Great in a team that is flying but useless if the game is a battle - especially away from home. This is why no-one has come in for him.

Where would you rather live in the clean air countryside of West Suffolk or in the industrial atmosphere of the Midlands. I am sure thats the problem holding up the move and I don't blame him for taking his time over the decision. I know for a fact he is over the moon to be in Suffolk and loves where he lives. You cannot argue with his goal ratio either and until that ridiculous sending off at Palace he was on fire. Its only my opinion but I would keep him but balancing out the argument he would be silly to stay if Keane does not rate him and he obviously does not. My feeling is Keano has to ship someone out before he gets our left sided player.

funny how it is sometimes claimed that players don't get on with Keane yet when given the chance prefer to stay - Pablo nor Stead - or of course it could be we pay them far too much!
