Keane: I Learnt a Lot at Watford
Keane: I Learnt a Lot at Watford
Thursday, 18th Mar 2010 17:25

Boss Roy Keane says he learnt a lot about his players during the 2-1 defeat at Watford on Tuesday. The Town manager kept his squad locked in the dressing room for 90 minutes after a performance he described as “unbelievable”.

Keane said: "I certainly learnt so much about the players the other night it was untrue.”

The Blues boss was clearly very unimpressed with his side’s display at Vicarage Road but says a bit of anger isn’t always necessarily a bad thing: “Anger’s good. It’s good to get angry. It’s an emotion, it’s part of the game. If people upset you and you don’t get angry, then I think you’re in the wrong game.

“I think sometimes it’s good to go a bit mad. I don’t throw teacups, I think I’d rather throw punches!

“Obviously, I appreciate those days are gone, you can’t be going around assaulting people, but I can understand managers’ frustrations when they fall out with players.”

Meanwhile, former Town loanee Jon Macken, who will be back at Portman Road with Barnsley on Saturday, has told the club site that Town are moving in the right direction: "I still believe Ipswich are on the way up.

"Their problem has clearly been all these games drawn, which is a lot of points to give away. Yes, they lost in the week to Watford, but their record before that hasn't been too bad at all. I'm expecting a tough game, as it always is when you come to Portman Road.

"I loved my time at Ipswich and have nothing but good things to say about the club. Ipswich have been down at this level for a number of years now without always getting the rewards.

“I hope they do eventually turn things around and push for the Premier League because a club of their stature, with the fans they have, deserve success."

If he's learnt anything then i think we will see the same team that started against Cardiff -

Or if he's seen what ive seen then he'll drop Walters -Finally, Play Counago with Murphy, let Wickham grow up and maybe bring him on final 5 minutes.
Play D.Wright if fully fit, keep O'connor at left back

Instead of always blaming the players maybe Keano should look in the mirror and ask:
A) Why does he always change a winning team?
B) By taking off Garvan so early it only re-enforced the blame on probably our most creative player. I am sick of Owen being used as a scapegoat!!
When Ian Holloway lost at Portman Road a few months ago he blamed the defeat on his tinkering and whatever was said in the dressing room remained behind closed doors.
Look and learn Keano and stop being so damn arrogant!!

Totally agree with marcoitfc. Dropping Wright and subbing Garvan were very bad decisions. Managers are paid to make the right decisions and RK keeps getting it wrong.

Have patience, we are unlikely to ever get another Manager with Roy Keane's passion, we are currently fortunate enough to enjoy the potential benefit of that passion at ITFC, give the man time and our full support and I'm very confident that we shall all reap the rewards next season.

Superblueflude - Play Pablo ? Are you serious ? I never understand why so many fans like him. All he does is get the ball, try and take on 10 players and ends up losing it and is lying on the grass ! Useless player !

i agree pablo is rubbish. he,s the laziest player on the pitch 9 times out of 10 and noway scores enough goals had one good season years ago and thats it

Marco,
if you think that Keane doesn't look in the mirror (more than any other manager i have ever known), then you clearly haven't observed him very well this season
his very self criticism creates the player respect to accept criticism from him when warranted...

Counago is the only player who can keep the ball, have a first touch, can show some magic moments........ but he is not a 20goal player. The only reason he seems to have to beat 10players is he comes too deep to collect/given the ball...... I know pablo is not the total answer and his end product should be better, but when we take him out of the team (esp at home) we look flat, boring and only a couple % better than scunthorpe.

If things have not changed then RK has until xmas.

The worse bit about this season is we were playing better "football" under Joe Royal and he had freebies and aging playing staff.

I watch so many game this season and wonder when we are going to get a corner taker who can beat the first man on the post.

pablo is no murphy but lets all be honest, hes a lot better than wickham is right now! nuff said really. still not behind keane. said from the day he was appointed he was useless. mark my words, new manager next year!

We've now had two managers in succession with 'passion'. For passion read 'bully', ask Jordan Rhodes or Akos Buzsaky. You can probably add Owen Garvan to the list too.
If there's an Irishman that's set to leave the club before next season I pray that it's Keane and not Garvan.

Can somebody check to see if actually petersongoal said from the day Keane was appointed he was useless, or was he like the majority happy to see the back of Superjim and extremely happy when we won the two games under Keane last season.
When a team is not playing to their full potential it 's so easy to look at the manager and blame him, do we become a club who sack the manager every season?, or do we give him a fair crack of the whip, Bristol City today sacked their manager after nearly five years at the club, after realising they are not going to progress further. Give Keane another season at least, if Daryl Murphy had not been such a plonker when he was first asked to come here it could have been so different.
Pablo has been over rated by some fans for so long, yes he can do great things but they are so few and far between he is a luxury we cannot afford to have in a struggling team. He always was lazy, it was touted about that the reason he was first let go when he couldn't even keep up with Willie (dodgy knees) Donachie on long distance run

And what would you have said if he hadn't made a few changes and they still lost. Don't forget Watford have been a bogey team for many years now. Football today is a squad game and with the number of games we have RK has to make changes to keep players fresh. If only we had a squad system in 1981 then we would have won the treble.

Roy Keane said in a previous TWTD article "that you have to look at people who are always present in winning teams". He went on to name David Wright amongst others and then drops him.

In Murphy we have finally got a goal poacher. But that is all he is. His movement off the ball is poor. His ability to win a ball in the air is below average and his hold up play is below average. What he needs is a player like Healey or Counago to play off and he will get a hatfull of goals. What you don't do is play Wickham alongside him.

I am fed up with all the tinkering that goes on with the side. There is only one person to balme for Tuesday's performance and that is Keane himnself. It is about time he admitted that he is out of his depth and move on.

Bryan Robson had one good season with one club and has been disappointing eberywhere else he has been. Roy Keane had one good season with one club......history repeating.

“I think sometimes it's good to go a bit mad. I don't throw teacups, I think I'd rather throw punches!

Is this implying that he has punched someone in the changing rooms?

Suffolktractor added 19:48 - Mar 18
So Keano learnt a lot about his players on tuesday. He's had 10 months to learn about them, yet he still chops and changes the team even when we put 2 wins together.
As for roytheboy saying we are lucky to have someone with the passion for ITFC that Keane has, well, I think Magilton, Burley and Joe Royle more than match Keano's passion. I do not doubt he wants to do well, but I do doubt he has got the managerial ability to do well.

I disagree with some - subbing Garvan was the RIGHT decision. He was poor. However there were others who were equally as bad and bringing Martin on was the actual mistake.

Although this won't be popular, I agree with a previous post - dropping WALTERS is the way forward. Great work rate, but has recently delivered virtually nothing. I would get rid.

On another note, what do people actually expect RK to do after that performance at Watford? Congratulate the players and buy them a drink? Bottom line is a very strong team was selected and they underperformed. End of story. I am pleasec Roy gave them what for! Much better than the excuses made by the previous manager.

kentblue added 21:39 - Mar 18
Disagree with the above comment - would not get rid of Walters - Garvan is a talented player . He just needs the encoragement from a decent manager . Giving them " what for !" is both negative and unproductive ( mostly ) - it's just an excuse for the main part for bad leadership from the top ! ie Keane . I wish he would throw his punches and have his mad rants elsewhere so ITFC can regain some self respect and pride that it always has had.
