Bruce: Jack's Coming Back
Bruce: Jack's Coming Back
Saturday, 10th Apr 2010 09:09

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has confirmed that loan midfielder Jack Colback will return to the Stadium of Light in the summer, despite the Blues wanting to sign the 20-year-old on a permanent basis. Colback has been one of Town’s best performers this season, having moved to Portman Road on loan last summer.

Bruce says he hopes Colback and striker Martyn Waghorn, currently on loan with Leicester, can emulate the impact two of his other young players have made this season: “We’ve had rave reviews about both of them and the two clubs would like to make the deals permanent, but they will be coming back here.

“And the challenge for them is to do what Jordan [Henderson] and, lately, David [Meyler] have done. They both have the potential to become very good Premier League footballers.”

Saw Bruce say that on SSN- as someone pointed out, as we have developed Jack so well then hopefully Bruce will trust s with their next young protegee. I, personally, think Jack could still do with another 6 months in the Championship due to his build whereas Waghorn looks more physically ready for the Prem.

I don't want us to be a team of Loanees, and i don't want another "protegee" we should make a bid for him make a proper town player!
Come on ME get your cheque book out!

Spoke to a maccam the other day and they have been hearing lots of good things about him and are keen to give him a chance. surely he would play more games for us though! sign him up!

Agree we don't want too many loanees and protegees but a young player on loan from the Prem is surely a better option than an older loan player from another Champ club (like Healy) as they will be hungrier to learn. Hull didn't do too badly with Frazier Campbell did they?

Colback has been superb for us and it's no surprise that Bruce wants to keep him. But I wonder if they would accept a bid for him? Surely he would be worth a punt of say £1M or so, which is tempting for someone of his age. After all, how much did we (wrongly) gamble on Lee Martin? If Roy thinks he's close to a nucleus for his side surely Colback would be part of that?

Colback played really well for us and was a positive in many respects, although the downside is that we have spent a year developing a young player for Sunderland. Is this at the expense of devloping our own younger players? (e.g. Peters was often left out for Colback)

I agree that we have got to move away from loanees and build a decent side of our own players, on full-time Ipswich contracts. Loanees can plug gaps and boost the squad, but we need a decent core of our own players.

Having written the above, the best loan deal of the season was perhaps D.Healy - thank goodness we did not sign him on a permanent deal like we did Edwards, Martin, Priskin etc!!

ok, so it was always a long shot getting colback permanently, im sure he will always have seen his future at sunderland but im sure will be immensely happy with how things have been for him since coming to town on loan. in my eyes when he plays for the club he is a town player, he has given so much to us this season - so i im not bothered by having a young loanee player from the prem as a regular in the side.
i know bruce wants him back but a suitable offer would tempt him and i think everyone would agree he'd be well worth the money.
murphy should be signed, has been a big boost since coming in. dont think healy has shown enough to merit a permanent deal, especially as it would be a large sum to sign him.
since colbacks a longshot, would like to see someone like gilfy sigurdson of reading come in, in terms of wingers think ivan sproule of bristol city could add pace to the side whilst posessing a bit more steel then martin and perhaps edwards can offer.
i know keane was interested in ian harte earlier in the season, wouldnt be a bad shout? as o'connor s coming on now and could learn alot from someone as experienced as harte who was been prolific for carlisle this season, albeit in league 1. rosenior also for me has done enough and should be signed, wright and rosenior at rb would show real strength in terms of the depth of our squad.
think smith and eastman and other youngsters such as troy brown can sort out the 2nd string of our defence not forgetting brucey's future yet to be decided.
as for the strikers, assuming lisbie and stead will move on, that leaves us with pablo, priskin and wickham, so if murphy signs, and keane is looking for a smaller squad next season, i cant see a second striker coming in unless one of priskin or counago move on too, but which one?
quinn, healy, stead, lisbie, balkstein and probably bruce will move on. would like garvan to stay, his participation in the remaining games could be pivotal in whether he stays. i think trotter is a decent young player and think it would be a mistake to let him leave.
alot to ponder but think we can get the right people in to give us that bit extra quality without breaking the bank.
players out: players in:
quinn, sigurdson (reading)
lisbie, sproule (bristol)
stead, rosenior
c.healy, harte (carlisle)
bruce. daryl murphy

think i would probably prefer to see counago stay and priskin go as i cant see priskin getting on well with murphy, wickham and a new striker as competition, whereas pablo would be worth his salt in the capacity of impact sub. this is a very difficult position to fill, so ill leave that to roy!

I wouldn't read too much into this. Colback has had a good season so Bruce is just talking him up a bit - he isn't going to publicly announce that he won't get a game for Sunderland so he can come to us for free is he! As others have noted Colback probably won't get as much game time at Sunderland as he would at Ipswich, so he might be tempted to come back if the option was presented to him (Murphy and D Healy will tell him that sitting on the bench isn't that much fun). Bruce will also have his rebuilding plans and might consider taking some cash for someone who will most likely be a squad player (like with Leadbitter and Edwards last year). RK should at least test the water. Time will tell whether it will work out...

As a Sunderland fan, I will be interested to see how far he has progressed when he comes back to us. Bruce seems to be one to give youth a chance and the word up here was that Ipswich was never going to be a permanent arrangement.

Also, what happened to the clown? I don't see his postings anywhere? Is this Communist China? Did the owners of this site decide his views were not along their lines of thinking? Yes, he did talk crap but some of it was funny.

It was always going to be a long shot, getting Colback in permanently. Sending him down here on loan is different to Murphy and Healy being sent here, they're surplus to requirements so it gets some of their wages off the bill and the possibility of moving them on permanently if the loan deal works out. Colback is different, he's a promising young player and the best way to promote his development is to send him somewhere on loan where he's likely to be a regular. So I doubt very much that Bruce ever saw this as a loan deal with a view to a permanent one, much to the annoyance of most of us Town fans.

No surprise. Well done Roy for bringing him in in the first place. But, now with nothing to play for, drop him and bed in a player for next year.

I'm not sure Sigurdsson would move to a club of equal standing as Reading: a club regarded as having a great chance of going up next season. Would you move club after breaking into the first team, getting the fans to love you and you're finally settled in a new country? Not sure I would.

MACKEMYANK - We'll direct the Clown towards the Sunderland forums then...he'll be more appreciated!
...And Communist China? If you want to feel the cold hand of the dictatorial Left, try posting a socio-economic fact on the Guardian website (that doesn't fit their delusional naivete and political agenda). It's no coincidence almost all dictatorships in history have been created by the Left.

BYRNE_16 agree with you on that one! It would be good to keep Jack but not as a loanee anymore. We have to build a team to get us up, which means no loanees. Loanees are only when you don't have money and when you are in the middle of a season for cover up. I think Keano must do his best this preseason to build a winning team that will lead us to the Premiership. I suggest:
OUT - Quinn, C. Healy, Counago, Priskin, Bruce, Lisbie, Thatcher, Balkestein, Martin
IN - D. Murphy, D.Healy, Rosenior from current loanees (assuming Colback is not available) and then Chopra if possible. It is not a bad idea to try to get some of the relegated teams players. I see a lot of talent at Portsmouth for sure and they will go cheap because of their financial condition and if noone wants them from the Prem league I am sure they could be happy to join us.

I think there may be a chance that Colback will be back especially after the new year. Whatever happens Roy has a massive job (and he knows it) getting the right squad and balance for next season. Not necessarily my choices but I think Roy will get rid of both the Wrights, Balkestein, Bruce, Rosenior (blotted his copybook and too outspoken) Garvan, Trotter, Quinn, Lisbie. I think he should give Priskin another chance and although I like Stead I think he is a gonner as well. I think Roy will keep Martin but heaven knows why and please do not sign David Healy (Id rather have Colin Healy) as my worst fears have been realised. I posted on here many times before he came he was a waste of time and money and nothing to date has changed my mind. If Murphy ups his work rate would keep him. Lots to be done I'm afraid and probably won't be done until October as is usual with our Club. I don't envy you the task Roy but good luck - my one ask is please get in one or two players with genuine pace to give us much needed width.

so SlowTractorBoy, you'd leave us with a grand total of 1 striker then plus Murphy if he improves his work rate. That would be a great plan.
