Keane: Parachute Extension Will Make Life Tougher
Keane: Parachute Extension Will Make Life Tougher
Wednesday, 21st Apr 2010 09:46

Boss Roy Keane feels that the planned extension of Premier League parachute payments to four years will make it harder for established Championship sides to compete for promotion. The new plan, which is still subject to a vote and agreement from the Football League, would see relegated clubs receive £16 million in each of their first two years out of the top flight and £8 million in each of the following two.

Keane says the proposal, which if agreed would come in next season, would make promotion more difficult for clubs in Town’s position: “It’s going to be extra hard.

“You look at the teams which have gone up this year, West Brom and Newcastle came down, they’ll always be strong anyway, but now they’re giving these extra few years and the money.

“So, the longer you’re out of the Premiership, it’s just going to get tougher and tougher. That’s why every pre-season each player you bring into the club seems to be a bigger decision than ever.”

After a meeting of the top flight clubs last Thursday a spokesman said that the proposals need the agreement of the Football League, while a vote will be taken at the Premier League's AGM in June: "Any decision regarding the future structure of parachute payments cannot be taken by the Premier League alone and must be agreed with the Football League.

"The Premier League is currently in positive discussions with the Football League on a number of issues; however an announcement will only be made once these have reached a satisfactory conclusion."

Looking at next season, Keane expects the Championship to again be difficult: “The teams which are coming down will be pretty strong, no doubt. The teams coming up, the likes of Leeds and Norwich, they’re very, very good Championship clubs.

“We keep saying it’s going to get harder and harder, that’s why the quicker you get out of it the better. It’s taken Burnley a long time to get out of it and they are struggling to stay in it.

“It’s very, very difficult, there’s no getting away from it. But that’s the aim, and the chief executive and owner are aware of it and that’s why when you invest in players you’ve got to try and get the right players. You can’t afford to make too many mistakes in the transfer market.”

The Blues boss is confident that his side aren’t too far away from being contenders: “I still think we’re not far from being a decent team, but we’re far enough away.

“We’ve got four or five players we want to get in and one of those is someone who is going to put the ball in the back of the net, and there aren’t many of those who are prepared to drop into the Championship. There is an element of a wage structure here, so it’s going to be tough.”

These_arent_the_days - I get tired of this "Woe is me! I say something negative about Roy Keane and I get slated!" crap. I've seen plenty of people (including myself) get as equally slated for daring to point out a positive. It goes both ways.

As usual, Keane states his opinion on something nothing to do with this club at this moment in time, yet all you Keane-haters start having a go at him and completely avoid the actual topic. You probably cry yourself to sleep at night about Keane being in charge.

So no encouragement of sensible sustainable business models and no support for grassroots football.

Blueknight i was commenting on the fact that Keane wants to bring in another 4 or 5 players when so far his dealings have not been that great and i am concerned with his ability to find good signings ,as his major success Delaney was signed as a left back and only switched to centre back due to injury .Leadbitter was signed as an attacking midfielder to play alongside a defensive one Trotter for a long time and has scored 3 goals ,less than Miller last season .Edwards ,Priskin and Martin signed for attacking purposes less goals scored this season .
As for the parachute payments the leagues will decide so there is no need to comment ,to me Keane is already making excuses for next season

Surco - slightly off-topic, but since you brought it up ..... didn't Jim get 56 points before he went? That's after his THIRD year in charge. We are currently on 55 (one off last season at the same stage), in Keane's FIRST (rebuilding) year in charge. Hardly a "far better position" under Jim as you seem to imply!

Anyway ... longer parachute payments bad. Boo.

Before anyone comments on my name, I made this account back in August when Priskin had signed, and I felt he was going to be great for the club.

However, I do feel Keane is right here, but, if we spend more wisely this summer, which looks set to happen, with hopefully around 10-15 players leave, and only 4-5 being brought to the club. Hopefully we keep to the wage budget, dont over spend etc. Ive got a feeling next year could be a good'un

all this will do is create 23 elite clubs and every year 3 of them will be in the championship.
it will make it harder for established championship clubs to be promoted. clubs like ourself, coventry, reading etc will have to take financial risks in the hope of breaking into the premier with a lucky goal at the play off final. causing more clubs to go into admin or even folding.

Why we're at it why don't we introduce 4 quarters in a match to allow for more TV ads and mid match sponsored events. Oh and why is there so much real estate left on our Town shirts? We could fit at least 50 other company logos on there.

Apologies if it's already been mentioned, but why don't the Football League just tell the Prem League where to go. I can't believe anyone other than the crap end of the Prem League agreeing to this.

A 2 year parachute payment is enough after relegation if you don't get back up bad luck.

> if we spend more wisely this summer, which looks set to happen

Why does it look set to happen? Keane has spoken about bringing in 4 or 5 players who are "men" and indicates he is looking to get them from the Premier League. His last signings were D.Murphy and D.Healy on loan, and presumably had funds been available he would have bought them permanently at huge cost (still might). I really hope we get some decent signings but it is just hope.

This seems to me as if the powers that be in the Premier League are sowing the seeds & putting the financial side of things into place for a Premier League division 1 & Premier League division 2. Then when the Football League have agreed to it all, they will cut them out of the deal altogether & "close shop" on promotion & relegation out of the Premier League completely. I beleive I'm right in saying that the Premier League clubs would prefer to cut the top flight down from 20 to 18 teams anyway. It is now vitaly important that we as a club achieve promotion asap so we dont miss out on the gravy train.

Totally agree, but I still believe the Championship will be easier than this season. WBA and Newcastle were a class above. I don't really fear any of the teams coming up (Norwich struggle without their two better players). The clubs coming down are in my opinion not as good as Newcastle and WBA - unless West Ham get relegated then that may prove tough.

bluearmy: sorry, but the football has been rubbish. I can hardly remember a single game when I thought "we played some nice football there". Sure there have been games we've dominated and should have won and there have been one or two entertaining games (literally one or two) but the football has not been high quality, not at all. Even Brian Murphy essentially admitted as much, so why can't you?

RK also worries me with his "players don't want to drop down" comment about signing players. No they don't, that's why you need to be able to see beyond the Premiership Roy. Maybe even to - shock, horror - Europe. Oh, but you sacked our international scout didn't you? D'oh!

As for this rule proposal, clearly it's a terrible idea. Why do these clubs need even more help to get straight back in? I can't believe for a second that the football league would agree to it, as it's not in the interest of a single football league club. Here's hoping sense prevails.

Jas, your right Newcastle & WBA were a cut above this season, & deserve their promotions, I think you may also have a good point about the Championship being easier next season than this, & with the new parachute payments not kicking in til the end of next season the new season really will be the time for us to push hard for promotion.

Surco and everyone else talking about Keane and anyone else's failings this season or the next my point is the story is about the plans for parachute payments and the opinions on them from a current championship manager... write a blog or find an appropriate thread in the forum if its your opinions on anything else you want to talk about.

blueknight: the heading of the story is about the payments but Roy goes on to talk about signings etc, which have provoked some of the comments, including mine. If he wants to talk about it aren't I allowed to comment unless it's the heading Phil has chosen for the story?

Have seen that Bogdanovic of Barnsley has turned down a new deal and is out of contract in the summer. Does anyone reckon he would be worth a punt on a free ?? I am not suggesting this would be a great signing as not seen him enough to judge but his goals record this year has been decent. It's also the time of year I start putting 2 and 2 together to make 5 !!!
On the parachute payments I can only echo what everyone else is saying....terrible idea nut one that will sadly go through to help the rich get richer !

if he doesnt get us up next season we will be rooted.this is all the more reason to look at getting a proper manager in..then again i sometimes wonder as people on here have said what bloody difference it will make if we get in the div 1 because the money cowboys have destroyed the top division so it is only 3-4 clubs who ever win the title its become as boring and predictable as scotland spain italy etc the rest of the teams are just 2nd division/championship teams playing around behind the money teams hoping to squeeze into europe if one of the top teams has a bad year..exciting isnt it its funny how greed always destroys

dirtydingusmagee added 08:09 - Apr 22
This is a bad idea, hope it never comes about, but the game has been on self destruct for some time,The Prem now is nothing like the old Div 1, and only those clubs with huge financial backing can survive in it. Clubs in Championship strive to get promoted ,but few can realisticly think they will do more than struggle for a season to stay there.Like they say'' money is the root of all evil''.ANYWAY i only came on this thread because i thought the parachute payment was an offer by someone to fly Keano off somewhere far from Portman Rd.

Liverpool_blu added 09:44 - Apr 22
The parachute payments are a joke. 16m for 2 years then 8m for another 2. which will allow them go go out and buy the players they want and need and give them better chance to bounce back up. It will not give others chance to give the prem a try and maybe stay there.

It should only be allowed to be used for Wages and ground improvemtns. Not to purchase new players.
