Town Amongst Clubs in McSheffrey Hunt
Town Amongst Clubs in McSheffrey Hunt
Wednesday, 9th Jun 2010 22:09

Town are amongst a host of clubs interested in released Birmingham left winger Gary McSheffrey. The Blues, Sheffield United, Charlton, German side Hannover 96 and former club Coventry City are all vying for the free agent’s signature.

The 27-year-old, who can also operate up front, started his career with hometown club Coventry, making his first senior appearance in a Premier League victory at Aston Villa in February 1998 when aged only 16 years and 198 days.

While at Highfield Road, McSheffrey spent time on loan at Swedish side IK Brage, Stockport County and Luton (twice). In August 2006 the 5ft 8in tall wideman moved on to Birmingham for £4 million.

The former England U20 international joined Nottingham Forest on loan briefly towards the end of 2008/09 and moved to Leeds United on a similar basis in January.

Former club Coventry would appear to be strong favourites for McSheffrey’s signature with the midfielder still living close to his home town.

A left-sided midfielder is very much on Town’s radar this summer with Peterborough’s George Boyd, Spurs youngster Andros Townsend and Charlton’s Nicky Bailey all also understood to be on manager Roy Keane's list of potential targets.

I would prefer the Spurs youngster if I had the choice. Besides I thought he was going back to Cov anyway

"linked with" player number 13!!! On a free I would go for him, as a replacement for either Stead or Pablo, However, I do fear that if he still lives close to Coventry they are almost certain to seal him. -Chopra, Wickham, Priskin, McSheffrey!! a beautiful front line!!!

Decent player, on a free, why not? Good age/experience and could do a very good job for us. Worth further investigation.

Suffolk_n_good - Did you count Perch yesterday? How annoyed are you going to be when we stop at 49!

Can't help but look at Mcsheffrey and think about the season Ambrose had last year and wonder, 'mmm...what if?'

Good shout on Steve Caldwell.

Exactly Keanish. No doubt there'd have been Palace fans saying the same about Ambrose coming back to Town on loan and doing very little. McSheffrey and Ambrose have similarities, plenty of Championship football, a move to the Premier League and then coming back down a level and losing their way a bit. In McSheffrey's case he started out in the top flight and had a spell in the third tier, albeit at a massive club like leagues.

He's can play wide left, carries a goal thread, good set piece delivery. To snap him up on a free would be a great bit of business. I suppose Coventry may be a big factor however if the reported interest from both clubs is correct.

Mungo, LOL! yeah, I did count Perch, I only started counting as a bit of a laugh, but I think my guess of 50 won't be far off the mark!!

redmond, believe you me I thought Priskin was the biggest waste of space, (& boy does he owe us a damn good season) but, I am mellowing in my old age!! & think we should wipe the slate clean for him & give him another crack, at the end of the day we want to get something out of him for our £1.7m, if we tried to sell him at the minute we wouldn't get anywhere near that figure back!

If he has a good pre-season, hopefully he can hit the season running & re-produce that "purple spell" he had at Watford.

McSheffrey Phillips both for nothing------Keogh Surman, both avaliable at Wolves; Ebanks Blake (said it before) would be good signing, will score goals at this level,Wolves signed Fletcher from Burnley Ebanks he could not in the team last season?. Dont let Cardiff take the p ---If they do not take 4mil move on,although would love to see him at PR. Austin Swindon,Cardiff showing an interest,me thinks only if Chopra comes to us,if not sign him!!!!

bluesym: he could not get in the leeds team last season because of how well they were playing, did u not see they got promoted? was looking at stats and he made the bench for most games so he would probally make our team, as they had the likes of beckford up front who i now believe has gone to everton. i think he would be a good signing as his on a free and we miss out on chopra which is likely!

This is the sort of player who could do well for us ,versatile,an eye for goal and on a free, sign him up.

Suffolk_n_Good // 50 is a low number I think. My count since Keane's arrival is, by today, 123! (from 23.04.2009) :)

And Magic's list was 124 between 05.05.2008-03.04.2009!

Pretty funny reading...

No Thanks, was good 4-5 years ago but not now, not in the same league as Pablo, who you're all conveniently pushing to one side. RK may have stayed away from the World Cup to get things sorted.....so where are these signings Roy???
More hot air from the Irish wonder, I'll be glad to see him gone, soon.

we cant sign anyone much better and we have no money so might aswell get him. not looking forward to next season still renewed my season ticket thoughbut next year should be even cheaper in league 1.

I liked him when he was at Luton and have thought for a while that he'd be a good signing for us as a striker (not sure about wide left!!). That said, he has mostly disappeared from view the last few years. Better McSheff on a free than Chopra for £4m, though.

So is Lee Martin being written completely off then?

To be honest, we all have our say on players, we all have a go at eachother as to who would be good, but I have to say when Jeffers was supposed to have come I bet there was not one fan who had doubts...and look what happened to him. I just think its best to sit back, relax and let the people who eat, sleep and breath football to have the nous to bring in the right players.

Jeffers was good for us , then he got greedy. Now he is going to northampton , i think.
mc sheffrey looks a shadow of the player he was 3 years ago and couldnt get in the leeds team. Yes they were everntually promoted ( after almost blowing it ) and yes it was only from league 1 .So a player struggling to get into a league 1 runners up team cant be that good can he ?

joeippy01 added 14:19 - Jun 10
i think he is better than what we have got, and on a free we have nothing to lose. leeds were a good team last season dont forget they beat man united aswell. like i said if he can make the leeds bench he is easily good enough to make our team. i think hios a bit slow now but cud still do a job for us excellent at free kicks.

however this is who we need to sign tresor kandol, scores so many headers and is available on a free as leeds have released him. watch the video before you judge him.
