Town Confirm Pablo's Palace Loan
Town Confirm Pablo's Palace Loan
Friday, 20th Aug 2010 17:03

Town have confirmed Pablo Couñago’s season-long loan move to Crystal Palace. The Spaniard, whose contract at Portman Road is up at the end of the season, will not be able to play for his new club against the Blues at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Couñago’s move brings to a close the striker’s nine-year connection with the Blues. Palace boss George Burley brought the 31-year-old to Portman Road from Celta Vigo in the summer of 2001 after being impressed with him in action for Spain’s U21s in a friendly against England in which he scored twice.

Having had a less than harmonious relationship with Joe Royle, Couñago returned to Spain and Malaga in the summer of 2005, before Jim Magilton brought him back to Town in the summer of 2007.

In total, Couñago made 147 starts and 95 sub appearances for Town, scoring 62 goals.

If Stead goes next it will leave us with one fit and recognised striker Priskin,
we were supposed to have 3 new faces this week, we got 1 and that position is already filled, surely they cannot reduce the wage bill much further now.
Hqw much of Pablos wages are we paying ???????

Pablo was one of those players you either liked or loathed...I fell into the former. On his day he was the best front player with his back to the goal that the club had at its disposal. Given what I like to call 'The Eric Gates role' I still think he could be a match winner.
He'll feel at home in London with all those ex-townies....Ole Ole Pablo good luck to you...as long as Palace finish below us

Pablo gave us some great times at PR. Actually, he was best under Royle, despite the apparently fractious relationship.

Too long not really doing much, unfortunately. Would have been better for all involved if he'd left a couple of seasons ago, or not even re-signed. Had the sense that he's been coasting a bit at Town; saunter around the pitch, crowd sing 'Ole Ole Ole' etc. etc.

Might do OK at a new club. Might not do anything.

Not enough goals, not enough assists-that says it all really. Jim should never have bought him back, let alone given him a contract extension! Best game he had was vs Inter in 2001. Played well that night but you can count his good games on one hand. How fans class him as a legend i will never know. Thank you Pablo for the five good games and goodbye.

I think my biggest worry, even though i think it is a long way off is the lack of signing players which may cause keane to become disgruntled enough to do a "Sunderland" and throw a PADDY and leave.
i really believe the pressure now is not just on keane but clegg, and this fellow must produce the goods (strikers), i think there is something suprising if not quiet dramatic about to happen at ITFC which the press have not got wind of and with a quiet successful campaign of clearing out Magiltons unwanteds the time is approaching that Clegg shows us why he is here (not just chopping dead wood). Even though keane looks frustrated but still sounds confident and upbeat, if we loose at Palace and maybe have a poor couple of games then the relationship between keane and owners will deteriorate very quickly if no players have been signed!
So i hope i am right and signings are imminent (signings already completed this season are looking very good) and the trend of good signings i hope will continue but certainly increase.
So here is to an interesting week or two for Ipswich supporters but whatever happens i am blue bleed blue and live blue till i die......

Maybe your theory is right. But consider it from an alternative perspective. Say it's RK who's trying to engineer a departure. I have thought for weeks that there is something not quite right in the relationship between the Manager and the Owner/Chief Exec. I could go into detail here but I will just ask what PR has worked over the last few weeks. Obvious answer RK. If you believe most of the views on here he has kept his side of the bargain by reducing the wage bill and it is ME/SC who have been dragging their feet in bringing in the players RK has identified as being the solution to our problems.

Ask yourselves this; What other Manager in all of the main leagues would recklessly get rid of players without securing adequate replacements. Sure some clubs have to sell before they can buy but we are not in that position. Quite the reverse; we can buy and then sell at leisure with other clubs fighting for the seemingly surplus players we may have. That is where the Manager has a degree of power because to the outside world we don't have to sell at all.

But RK has adopted a strategy of selling off the ITFC favourites seemingly at the insistance of the owner who wants to reduce the wage bill. Of course that's his perogative. Where it becomes messy is when it becomes obvious that he has railroaded certain players (some of them firm favourites with the fans) out of town eg K Lisbie, D Wright, O Garvan, J Walters, P Counago and now despite praise for his performances in the first three games, J Stead looks set to leave. Today he openly suggests (sic) that the board need to act quickly to bring in players.

We are where we are because of the Manager. If, as RK implys, the responsibility for having a squad which is threadbare at best, lies with ME/SC/Board then his position is untenable. He, as manager, had a duty to insist that the resources at his disposal to adequately deliver a sustainable challenge for promotion to EPL were provided. If ME/SC/Board tell him that they cannot share that vision then he should leave.

My conspiracy theory is that what RK is angling for. A confrontational situation in which he is either sacked, or from which he can walk away. Either way he can put the failure down to his employers.

In all of this I do have a degree of sympathy for RK. From his perspective and from that of ME the appointment was brave. If everybody keeps their nerve it may still work out, but from my perspective (and seemingly from the other side of the spectrum, Bl0000CD) the omens are bleak.

Says it all really.

COYB tomorrow

Interesting thoughts. I think the truth is that Keane would like to make a success of the Ipswich job, although he does seem to relish a dispute and can't keep his thoughts to himself (the comments today and the Walters comments midweek being examples). If Keane thinks he hasn't been given the tools to do the job (if the owner doesn't back him with the money he wants) then maybe, just maybe, he will walk away.

I think Evans wants Keane to succeed and wants to fund him properly. He gave Keane big money last year. Anyone can spend money and I suppose he now wants to make Keane manage: buy and sell, wheel and deal, deal with the players and get the best out of them. If Keane suceeds, great. If not, Evans knows not to renew his contract but can rest easy that he gave Keane a fair chance.

some very interesting theories, if this is a conspiracy on either part it is a dangerous game - if the board want rid of Keane by letting the club become so thred bare that he hasnt the resource to a job what will happen when he walks and the transfer window is closed - a new manager wont be able to do much and if that is the case by January it could be too late, very risky. Also for keane to try to be pushed - surely it is in is best interest to prove himself successful? he clearly has a bunch of lads around him that want to play for him now (and those that didnt have gone) and it would be easier for him to stay the season then when we dont win promotion use the 'i didnt have the resources' card. Whatever the theory is i still say the most annoying thing is the total lack of communication from the Club and the so called voice of the club CLEGG who seems to have the best job in the planet - doing very little and getting paid a great deal!!! I am sure he does more, but if i dont see it (i.e as in him being open and honest about the club in public) then i will stick with believing he is an overpaid yuppie. rant over.

Hardly, he's still on our books!

bluelady - never has it been so clear that ITFC fans are being treated like proverbial mushrooms 'kept in the dark and fed bull---t'.

Make no mistake this club is an absolute shambles - and progressing well in that direction.

Pabs was, for me, one of the few plus points over the last two disappointing / frustrating seasons. Yes, his goal ratio was not good enough and yes he didn't 'perform' every outing, but he had a certain something that the rest of the squad (apart from maybe Garvan), didn't have - something that made him a bit special, call it flair, skill, awareness, the ability to do something different (remember the back heel goal at Charlton?). I always enjoyed watching him play because of that 'class'. However I can see he is not a RK type of player ( even though he did for the most part up his work rate significantly for RK last season) and therfore cannot argue that he should not go so far as RK's plans are concerned. Good luck to him though as he was a player I (almost) always enjoyed watching play for Town.

Tractorboybig, The best player we've had for years?!!!!! He is the most overrated player more like it. You ask who we'll get to replace him, My Nan could do a better job and she's been dead for 4 years, God rest her soul. If we signed Torres and Messi some people would find negatives.

I can't believe Stead is still transfer listed. We clearly can't sign a striker to save our lives and all the others are either sold or injured. He's good at this level.

shoopdelang added 02:39 - Aug 21
He isn't the quikest and at times yes does seem lazy. But regardless of this he is the most talented player we have at the club, not the best athlete by a longshot but based on technical ability and being able to turn a man he is our best player. Although saying this I can understand why Keane has got rid because as i highlighted he does come across as lazy and whether he was right or wrong, its shouldn't be tolerated for any player to argue with the manager and get away with it.

Also regardless of how good or bad he is, it doesnt make sense to loan him to another club. Not when we are in need of a striker. Also i would take Stead off the transfer list, unless we managed to sign a replacement beforehand, he is a decent player at this level.

just got home 3am to see this news....i knew it was gonna happen, but it saddens me deeply. My favourite Ipswich player since Kieron Dyer and Mariner before him...
New managers cant help, but bring their own players and style in and ship out those players that arent theirs...I dont mind Keane, but the best times ive had watching Ipswich since I was a kid was with Burley as manager, and who cannot say that it would be more fun watching Ambrose, Pablo & Garvan on a saturday than Peters, Priskin & Norris.

Dont get me wrong I like some of the players he's brought in, but i dont see a player there who can beat a man or play a killer pass...possibly Edwards, but thats about it...hopefully we get some good results in the next few weeks and attract a good calibre of player.

being london boy Palace is a very tempting place to visit. Wont be long before Sixto Peralta is there

All the people knocking Pablo think back last season to how many games he actually started or played a full 90....he never really got a fair crack of it under Roy. Part of my love for the club has gone with Pablo

Hate their ground, as we always seem to play them on a wet windy winters night, but i'll have to venture and watch Pablo in action this season. Im glad he's gonna get games now...maybe Keane will be gone, Mariner will get the job and Pablo becomes his assistant!

ITFCtommy I echo your comment but it should be directed at KEANE not Pablo . Keane has decimated the team . Time for him to GO and bring in someone who encorages and atttracts players to the club .It will be a long season if we have to put up with the surly one -

great servant to itfc, shame your ipswich career seems to have ended on a low but this seems to be happening with every player we have been shipping out under keane. a lot of fans slagging him off but iv sin enough times when the fans were singing his name to get him off the bench, so he cant have done that bad!! good luck pabs!!
