Keane: Forest Defeat Much Like Watford
Keane: Forest Defeat Much Like Watford
Saturday, 23rd Oct 2010 18:10

Boss Roy Keane felt the Blues' third successive defeat at Nottingham Forest was similar in many ways to Tuesday’s loss at Watford. The Town manager was again disappointed to concede just before the break, even if Lewis McGugan’s freekick was a 35-yard thunderbolt.

Keane said: “It was similar to the Watford game and the match up here against Forest last year when it ended up 3-0.

“When it’s 2-0 you’re gambling. If we’d got back to 2-1 we’d have had a chance, but then again the way we were attacking at the end we could have lost by three or four because we were taking chances.”

Despite acknowledging that Lewis McGugan’s goal was a superb strike, Keane was disappointed to again concede on half-time: “People will look at it as a good goal from the boy and I wouldn’t begrudge him his bit of glory but we should have seen out the first half, the same as on Tuesday. Déjà vu.

“Forest you could say took their foot of the pedal a little bit after the break, but I’m OK with the players. Two bad goals, some generally good play from us, but you’ve got to put the ball in the back of the net and we’ve not done that again.”

The Town boss says current results have been a bit harsh on his side: “It’s just not happening for us at the moment. I don’t think we’re getting what we deserve. That’s three defeats in a row. Against Coventry I think we could have got something, at Watford I think we could have got something and I think we could have got something today.

“We had one or two half-chances, the one that hit the bar and came out and the lad blocked it on the line. At the turning points in games we’re just not getting the breaks.

“We kept getting in there, but having said that I think their keeper’s made only one or two saves. It’s not as if we’re getting their keeper man of the match, the same the other night.

“I don’t remember the opposition keepers making too many saves. As much as we’re getting in good positions, it’s just the final ball or the final touch [which is letting us down]. He made a good save from Connor, but other than that he didn’t have much to do.”

Keane said that striker Jason Scotland was always expected to play only the first 45 minutes and that the Trinidadian wasn’t injured, despite being on the end of a heavy challenge.

Forest boss Billy Davies, who revealed that goalscorer McGugan had been laid low with illness earlier in the week, was delighted with the midfielder’s stunning freekick: “It was a great strike, fantastic. If it’s not the goal of the season, it’s one of them. It was a wonderful goal.

“A lot pleased me today. I thought the back five were excellent considering they played out of position and they had to shuffle it around.

“It was nice to see David McGoldrick coming into the side and getting his goal, that will do him a lot of good and give him a lot of confidence.

“I thought that throughout the side we worked very hard and showed good quality and good fitness and great determination. It’s a pleasing three points for us.”

Losing patience a little bit. Jurys still out for me (but its starting to lean towards a majority verdict). The one thing Keane has never managed at this club if we are being honest, is stability. That feeling of when we are playing poorly we might still get some draws out of games.

When we are playing poorly we just never look like getting results. Starting to fear that Keane's time could be up soon if he doesnt turn it round, esp if we lose to league 2 opposition at home tues night.

But in all honesty, who would we get in to replace him? Seriously I'm not sure if I can think of anyone that a) Would want to come here b) Has the quality to get us out of the division and c) we can afford that applies to a and b.

my top 3 managers i would want if roy went would be in order

O'neill (i can dream cant i?)
O'Driscoll @ Doncaster
Curbishley

Bluefinger - Everyone gets behind the team, and i know what your saying about his mentors, you cant really get much better managers to have played under however nearly two seasons on from when he first took charge the team hasnt really moved on. i hear its much better run behind the scenes now at training etc but alas things just have not worked on the pitch other than the first month or so of the season... i want to think that Roys got his own side in now or the majority of it but it just doesnt seem to be bearing fruit, i think tactically hes behind alot of the other managers out there and hes been in management a good 5-6 seasons now. I was a RK backer last season, but my patience especially with his one up front tactic is worn thin

Hey, i hope we end up winning the next 10 games or so and i eat my own words but i cant see much positive happening with this team in the short term unless Roy makes some positive changes on the pitch and plays a settled side. i think we have some good players at the football club but they need to be played correctly in the right positons Scotland for example, he was brought in to be a poacher, hes 5-7/8... he cant play up on his own without support.
i thinks hes perfect with wickham and they compliment each other well. when they last started a game together ( cardiff i think) they tore them appart.

Hate to be negative- but the game last night was poor. At times we looked outclassed like a League One side playing a Premiership one....
Should have been 4-1 (think Colback was unlucky not to have scored...)
First goal was simple...beat the right-back,-cross,- 1-0 down. Second goal was a blaster-but why did our wall move AWAY from the ball???
Norris, Leadbitter and Edwards looked lost throughout the match.
Think it is unfair to have a go at the loan players- Townsend and Colback gave it a real crack.
If we are going to use Murray- why not use Lavery? (a player who can beat 2/3 players at will?) - we were in desperate need of some creativity and attacking guile.
Fulop was outstanding at times-kept us in the game from the 3rd minute onwards (that was a brilliant save from Cowan..)
The game against Norwich is looking more and more important for Keane....

by the way- an Assistant would be a good idea for Keane at the moment. He has admitted himself that he is making mistakes-maybe an old hand on board at the moment would help him.
Wickham had a good second half- though at the moment he must be thinking about the January Transfer Window....

I'll stand tall Whoppit and Chambers because against the likes of you two my arguments will always seem more laudable simply because you two haven't got half a clue!

Seriously though Chambers, this was a bit of banter before but if you're going to come on here every time and spout 'Keane out' rhetoric when we don't win i would actually like to have a quiet little word in your ear sometime soon because you're really starting to get on my tits.

Ignoring those two fools, We've got 5 league games between now and Norwich. I want a minimum of 12 points from those which we're more than capable of plus a quarter final slot in the league cup. I'm hoping October was our blip which every team the Championship has in a season.

Tell you what though, maybe we could just get Joe Royle back or maybe Jim Magilton, then maybe everything would be OK!? 'kin' idiots a lot of you! I'd rather Portman Road was filled with 10,000 than 20,000 some of you being like you are on here. Some of your posts are a disgrace! Don't care whether you pay money or not for 'your opinion', support the club or get a job where your measly 20-odd quid doesn't mean so much. Look at Pompey fans!! Hang your head in shame Chambers and Whoppit, you embarrass us!

we should have got rid of mr keane last year after the disastrous start now we are a year behind the 8 ball.i suppose there is no point in keeping him for the rest of his contract' maybe just to prevent a huge payout which is no doubt written into his contract we could put him in charge of the youth team. while we get a good experienced manager in who knows what he is doing.then we could shove mr keane out at the end of his contract with no more damage to the club

Another dissapointing result - but more to the point is the lack of goals and entirely predictable shipping of 2 in the first half (admittedly one being a potential 'goal of the season')

I'm neither pro nor anti Keane, but he needs to get the team organised and turn results around very quickly now.

Most fans will put up with a few lost games, but we want to be entertained by attacking football - not the nervous, tentative stuff that we seem to get at present.

Keanish - your loyal blinkered diatribe in support of Keane reminds me of those would still vote Conservative if it were a donkey wearing a blue rosette !/ or King Canute trying to stop the tide ! Keane has been given time and has shown that he is not up to it. His syle of management lacks creativity , style and attack . The man is moody and has poor socail skills .- etc etc .

Melodramatics from keaneish I think. I'm supporting my club by suggesting (and pleading) that we get rid of your messiah as soon as possible because he IS useless

I make it almost 10 hrs of first half league football for just 1 goal, now i'm not suggesting we return to the boom or bust footie of Royle or of a Mowbray but if we only get 1 player in their box we are probley going in at least 1 down and thats a mountain we cant climb under Roy.In my opinion he deserves credit for bringing in some good players and moving on 1 or 2 who would only perform when they felt like it but tactics he just cant get it right.

I've supported Keane all along, but enough is enough. He can bleat on about having no money to spend but there's teams above us with less money & worse squads. What they have got is managers with tactical brains. Keane should follow Strachan's example & walk away, to let Curbishley move in...

Well apart from keanish, all seem to be on the same bus for a change, we are now where we finished last season, only thing is we rose to that position last season this time we have dropped to it .Forgive me if i sound negative Keanish ,but if things have improved why are we heading down.Keane has shown this month he dosnt learn either tactically or in public relations, and he dosnt even seem to care ,this fact was pointed out last season. We are not going anywhere with him, even he says as much, so now is time for looking to replace him,let someone else have go.

I bet there are a few managers out there that would be kicking their lips at the chance of joining us. Whilst we still have some sort of reputation as one of the better championship clubs. Imagine inheriting a spine of the team of fulop, mcauley, Norris, leadbitter, Scotland and wickham. The right man COULD get us all excited again.

I do just have to say this ... although I think everyone feels very deluded with everything at the moment, it is a real shame to read posts from some who seem to delight in Roy's failings. This post from Vulcher sums it up really 'Keane out!! Chambers we can say it now....yes!'. Although I am clearly unhappy with the recent run of results, I simply can not believe how so called supporters seem so happy when we lose - almost wanting us to lose. What's all that about? And why they refuse to comment when we win is beyond me.

Still, plenty of decent posts from people who give a balanced view and can't disagree that things are not going well at the moment.

No doubt waiting to be slagged off by the Keannites on this board, wanted the man to go last year but realise it would have cost the club a lot of money. The club should give RK a month to turn this disatrous spell round, if not on your bike Keanno. Surely Marcus Evans and his Olympic side kick Clegg have seen enough, but there again what do us mere fans who have supported the club for 47 years know.
The club has some half decent players, but I am afraid RK is not the man to gel this club into a top 6 team. Watched the Championship highlights last night and saw some great goals from teams who are more adventurous then Ipswich. Please Marcus save our club from being just another mid table team who will win the odd game. Give him the boot and let Roy spend his time walking his dogs.

I'm in my thirties now and have been watching town since I was 10. I've seen some dross. (Duncan Mcgiven etc). I have tried to be positive. I was elated when Keane was appointed. Really confused now. Its not just the losses for me. The style of football we play is dreadful. Times are hard and having to fork out to be thouroughly bored out of my brains is starting to wear a little thin. If we were to lose having a go at teams, fair enough but to continue with futile long throws (Edwards) and pathetic corners (Leadbitter), Scotland up top on his own, constant changing of team selection, playing players out of position ....shall I go on. When was the last time there was any real entertainment at Portman Road. Pablo's last minute goal for me and thats it.
I think Roy has got until December to turn this around. Too many people fed up with boring football week in week out!
