Keane: Forest Defeat Much Like Watford
Keane: Forest Defeat Much Like Watford
Saturday, 23rd Oct 2010 18:10

Boss Roy Keane felt the Blues' third successive defeat at Nottingham Forest was similar in many ways to Tuesday’s loss at Watford. The Town manager was again disappointed to concede just before the break, even if Lewis McGugan’s freekick was a 35-yard thunderbolt.

Keane said: “It was similar to the Watford game and the match up here against Forest last year when it ended up 3-0.

“When it’s 2-0 you’re gambling. If we’d got back to 2-1 we’d have had a chance, but then again the way we were attacking at the end we could have lost by three or four because we were taking chances.”

Despite acknowledging that Lewis McGugan’s goal was a superb strike, Keane was disappointed to again concede on half-time: “People will look at it as a good goal from the boy and I wouldn’t begrudge him his bit of glory but we should have seen out the first half, the same as on Tuesday. Déjà vu.

“Forest you could say took their foot of the pedal a little bit after the break, but I’m OK with the players. Two bad goals, some generally good play from us, but you’ve got to put the ball in the back of the net and we’ve not done that again.”

The Town boss says current results have been a bit harsh on his side: “It’s just not happening for us at the moment. I don’t think we’re getting what we deserve. That’s three defeats in a row. Against Coventry I think we could have got something, at Watford I think we could have got something and I think we could have got something today.

“We had one or two half-chances, the one that hit the bar and came out and the lad blocked it on the line. At the turning points in games we’re just not getting the breaks.

“We kept getting in there, but having said that I think their keeper’s made only one or two saves. It’s not as if we’re getting their keeper man of the match, the same the other night.

“I don’t remember the opposition keepers making too many saves. As much as we’re getting in good positions, it’s just the final ball or the final touch [which is letting us down]. He made a good save from Connor, but other than that he didn’t have much to do.”

Keane said that striker Jason Scotland was always expected to play only the first 45 minutes and that the Trinidadian wasn’t injured, despite being on the end of a heavy challenge.

Forest boss Billy Davies, who revealed that goalscorer McGugan had been laid low with illness earlier in the week, was delighted with the midfielder’s stunning freekick: “It was a great strike, fantastic. If it’s not the goal of the season, it’s one of them. It was a wonderful goal.

“A lot pleased me today. I thought the back five were excellent considering they played out of position and they had to shuffle it around.

“It was nice to see David McGoldrick coming into the side and getting his goal, that will do him a lot of good and give him a lot of confidence.

“I thought that throughout the side we worked very hard and showed good quality and good fitness and great determination. It’s a pleasing three points for us.”

If the name fits!!!!

Magilton left QPR while in the top 6, get your facts right and got the push from us when we had just beat the mustard. I doubt Mr Keane will still be here when we play the mustard at home again!!!

Taxi for two?

its not the fact that we are losing games (thats football) but it is the way we are losing games week in week out without anythinmg changing. Leadbitter terrible dead ball, Edwards non-existant,Norris not a patch on last year(despite his goals), Wickham not progressing as we all want him to and Keane not learning what his best formation is. when you cant score any goals why play one up front, i would rather lose 3-2 going for it than this dross

people in the media go on about giving managers time, and to be fair to ME he does give managers time. Time is all well and good when you are improving even if not being overly successful...the improvement is still there.
I fear now that what i thought was a blip agaisnt coventry and watford is infact turning into a landslide. one win in six games and four points from possible eighteen unfortunatly is relegation form and whats worse were not even playing reasonable football while we are doing it.

I think we really set ourselves up to fail today: four changes to the last starting line up, Smith out of position at left-back, and one up front. One goal in the first half in the league this season, that should tell us something.

Murray coming on highlights the lack of striking options that we have. We really have to question why when we so badly need a striker did out manager just go out and sign two central midfielders on loan, when he clearly rates Norris and Leadbitter as the best in those positions and after Hyam was doing so well anyway.

Not many of the Keano hardcore fans today !!!! Maybe they are finally taking off their rose tinted specatacles and realising how useless Keane is. This is where I would say Keane out but it's obvious now isn't it?

I live in Nottingham and don't get to many games so normally listen on the internet, today was a chance to see and actually support my team in the flesh however after todays performance I am glad I don't have to sit through that every week.
Nothing going forward even remotely suggested we would score a goal, set pieces where an obsolute joke and a soft goal given away, the free kick was very well hit but the wall was a joke.
I was very happy when Roy became our Manager and have refrained from coming on here and giving him stick but enough is enough, our team is going obsolutely nowhere, we have good individual players but heaven only knows why they cannot play as a team and there is only one person responsible for this.
I have always thought it right to give a Manager time but his has come to an end and we need to move in another direction.
Although if I am honest what that direction is I don't know.
Really looking forward to going to work and getting all that stick from the Forest supporters, thanks for nothing lads.

I was very positive when RK joined us and thought that we were in for an exciting time, however the more I see of the team he puts out the more I despair. Watched it on my PC this afternoon and it was the same old story. Jason Scotland has no chance of winning the ball up front on his own. He can score goals, which he has proved but he has no chance out-jumping tall centre halves - the ball simply comes back into the Town half. If he is going to play one up front then it has to be Priskin or Wickham at least they have a chance of making the centre half make an effort to head the ball away. RK seems to send out a team to try and hang on to 0-0 at half time, this has failed us on several occasions and it is only when he changes things around later in the game that we seem to get into the oppositions last quarter of the field and begin to make chances. Why no start the game with a more attacking format we will be no worse off.

What does he have against Jamie Peters? We played the last quarter of the game with a midfielder playing at right back and a centre half playing at left back, with no width again up front, once Townsend came off we again had no width.

I can't see how Connor Wickham can progress within this set up and can only see him leaving at the first opportunity.

RK's tactics seem to reflect the fact that he has no idea what his best formation is - after 18 months. I want him to succeed but it looks increasingly unlikely that he will do so.

Nothing less than a good win in Tuesday's game against Northampton will be good enough. Defeat and the clamour for RK's departure will grow and grow. Interesting to see what team he puts out - surely he will not play Scotland up front on his won?

i think after today, it doesnt need to be said..

i possibly did have some Roy'se tinted specs on end of september, i was backing RK all through last year as i wanted to give the bloke the benefit of the doubt and i thought that after our start this season all was good in the world as alot of Town fans did.
Alas it seems we have reverted to last season again which i find puzzling after such a good start... the continuing of playing bad tactics and refusing to bend by RK on some matters has cost us another game today, how many more games will it take for him to realise that we are still letting in goals even if we play 1 up front... i dont think there are enough games left in the fixture list for him to see the error

I whole heartedly hope i eat my own words, ive always been a cup half full kinda guy wrather than half empty. Cup game coming up... would be nice to see us play some possitive attacking football, i think at the moment good performances are more important than results... we the fans need it and i think are owed it

We had a lucky start to the season and got a few good results, but now our lack of depth is showing and looks like we're heading for mid table.

"Murray coming on highlights the lack of striking options that we have..."

Not really. All clubs will blood promising youngsters. What it highlights is the fact that the £1.7m spent on the other striker left on the bench was a colossal waste of money, and also maybe highlights why the board aren't prepared to hand the manager more millions to spend.

we just seemed scared against a well drilled forest side..we had leadbitter colback and norris all trying to do the same job in the middle..scotland trying to win headers against two 6ft+ cbs!?.

we dont need so many of the same players, admitadly ive not seen much of colback but feel that we could have got cover elsewhere. maybe play colback lb.
i liked livermore he tries to get on the ball and go forward.

feel we've got to get more ambitious play two upfront scotland and wickham, CW had a couple of chances late on today and you feel that a young lad playing every week with confidence would of stuck them away. at the moment we'r guna loose cw to a prem club and won't have seen all he can do!

going to sheff u away in few weeks would love to see some more ambition keane and this side;

fulop

smith mcaulley delaney colback

edwards livermore leadbitter townsend

wickham scotland

norris played well early season so probably would take livermores place but need energy going forward so rotate norris leadbitter livermore

grumpyoldman, I never be the greatest Keane fan, but I have given him a chance, would never call for a manager to be sacked, but I'm afraid I running out of patience, I agree with some of the other posts on here, its no so much that we are mid table, It's the way we play, its boring to watch, As I said there is no progression since Marcus Evans took over, think both Jim and Roy have wasted money, we need someone who can bring in good young players from lower league, and play football! need to build a team, think Roy is un happy at lack of funds but he doesn't leave in the real world, He wants players like Chopra who would cost at least 4 mill and 20 grand a week in wages, so now he goes and get's players on loan from preimer, this has never worked. Its his inability in the transfer market and style of football that do it for me, if we were going some where then I think most fans would give more time.

3 losses in a row and mr keane still making excuses. not good enough. time to start looking for a replacement who will be here for next 2-3 years and can build the team we require to rise up .mr keane is not the man for the job surely the evidence is suggesting he will have to go .

Scunthorpe and now Nott'm Forest - both matches watched by an occasional (ardent) supporter! NO DRIVE - nothing but PEDESTRIAN approach to what is going on about them! We must get up go at opponents from the outset......!
No use being dainty on the ball with no end product!

Seems to me that our manager picks his side based on training and doesn't seem to take into consideration match form, familiar tactics or tyhe strengths and weaknesses of the opposition.

Clubs are spending millions in this league just to keep up with all the other clubs spending millions. You've got to splash out just to stay still, tread water and not get relegated. Some fans think that ME's investment into Town has purchased the right to fly up the league to our rightful place within the top tier. His investment means that we are not playing Yeovil away next Saturday in Division 1.

So in RK we have a manager who as a player, worked under Brian Clough, and Alex Ferguson. Both managers who had a rocky initiation to management. Let's hope that in time RK can emulate a fraction of the success that his mentors enjoyed.

Stop bitching. Smell the coffee and get behind the Town with some heartfelt support...

all kinds of sh** will be taken by town fans however being slated by the manager when he is serving up the most negative load of crap ever (after 20 million spent from last 2 managers) will not be tolerated...this is coming from someone who has never moaned like the d**ks on here who have been anti keane and magilton from day 1.But enough is enough we are all bored bored bored bored with your footy tactics. we do know more than u when it comes to footy the successful managers have been the positive passing free flowing ones... the crap managers mcgiven duncan keane..................

I hope RK goes soon. We can't really afford 3 season tickets these days (plus have to buy one for the young'un now too even though he's on our laps, and they're thinking about bringing in a minimum age policy next season apparently - so much for the family club that I remember that I've been supporting from my youth but I digress) so if I'm spending that much money year after year, I want to get some value for it. It's been dire since RK came and the rubbish he talks just makes it even worse. I've never heard anyone criticise the younger players but now they're going lose confidence and think the fans are on their backs and Roy's already written us off from the top 2, yeah thanks Roy, why didn't you let us know before we renewed that you'd be OK with your players only generally playing well (against Nottingham Forest) and having bad luck through not taking their one or two chances (in a whole game)? I'd have kept my money for something more worthwhile. It's not just about the money, I don't want to watch RK at our club not because I'm not a fan, but because I am. Sorry, rant over. Hope we do better and get a win on Saturday, we'll be there cheering <sighs>
