Keane: Forest Defeat Much Like Watford
Keane: Forest Defeat Much Like Watford
Saturday, 23rd Oct 2010 18:10

Boss Roy Keane felt the Blues' third successive defeat at Nottingham Forest was similar in many ways to Tuesday’s loss at Watford. The Town manager was again disappointed to concede just before the break, even if Lewis McGugan’s freekick was a 35-yard thunderbolt.

Keane said: “It was similar to the Watford game and the match up here against Forest last year when it ended up 3-0.

“When it’s 2-0 you’re gambling. If we’d got back to 2-1 we’d have had a chance, but then again the way we were attacking at the end we could have lost by three or four because we were taking chances.”

Despite acknowledging that Lewis McGugan’s goal was a superb strike, Keane was disappointed to again concede on half-time: “People will look at it as a good goal from the boy and I wouldn’t begrudge him his bit of glory but we should have seen out the first half, the same as on Tuesday. Déjà vu.

“Forest you could say took their foot of the pedal a little bit after the break, but I’m OK with the players. Two bad goals, some generally good play from us, but you’ve got to put the ball in the back of the net and we’ve not done that again.”

The Town boss says current results have been a bit harsh on his side: “It’s just not happening for us at the moment. I don’t think we’re getting what we deserve. That’s three defeats in a row. Against Coventry I think we could have got something, at Watford I think we could have got something and I think we could have got something today.

“We had one or two half-chances, the one that hit the bar and came out and the lad blocked it on the line. At the turning points in games we’re just not getting the breaks.

“We kept getting in there, but having said that I think their keeper’s made only one or two saves. It’s not as if we’re getting their keeper man of the match, the same the other night.

“I don’t remember the opposition keepers making too many saves. As much as we’re getting in good positions, it’s just the final ball or the final touch [which is letting us down]. He made a good save from Connor, but other than that he didn’t have much to do.”

Keane said that striker Jason Scotland was always expected to play only the first 45 minutes and that the Trinidadian wasn’t injured, despite being on the end of a heavy challenge.

Forest boss Billy Davies, who revealed that goalscorer McGugan had been laid low with illness earlier in the week, was delighted with the midfielder’s stunning freekick: “It was a great strike, fantastic. If it’s not the goal of the season, it’s one of them. It was a wonderful goal.

“A lot pleased me today. I thought the back five were excellent considering they played out of position and they had to shuffle it around.

“It was nice to see David McGoldrick coming into the side and getting his goal, that will do him a lot of good and give him a lot of confidence.

“I thought that throughout the side we worked very hard and showed good quality and good fitness and great determination. It’s a pleasing three points for us.”

Keane, if you wont to score goals then go back to playing 4,4,2 like we used to before you got scotland and we were second in the table because we could score. Not like now 4,5,1 its crap just one striker.

I for one am not going to get on the managers back because I think he can turn this bad patch around and get this club back up the league. This league is the tightest it has been in a long time and anyone can win it...even though I dont think we will be one of those, I cetainly think we can get in that top 6. We have one of the best teams in the league in my opinion which is capable of scoring plenty of goals. I know that isnt happening at the moment but by playing the players in the right positions with the right formation and consistently playing the same 11 then it will start to click.

Maybe its just me being a hopeful supporter but I think we are going to see something different and quite special over these next 2 home games with 2 wins and 2 comfortable wins with us scoring 2 or 3 goals. Lets get behind the blues and support the team we all love.

c'mon you blues

Collis I really hope that you're right. I think the reason people struggly to support Keane is because of part of your last comment you made.

You said that playing the players in the right positions and the right formation. Thats exactly the problem don't you think? Why is Keane doing it in the first place? We have such a good list of midfielders to pick from, both winger types, central workaholics, young playmakers etc. But when I saw 4 central midfielders lining up across the formation at Watford I just couldn't get my head round it!

And again playing Scotland upfront on his own. He's never played effectively at any club as a lone striker so why is Keane doing it?

Honestly mate I really hope we turn it round and that what you have predicted is exactly what happens, it just doesnt look great right now!

Praise the lord! That's more like it Chambers! That's all i was after. Reason.

To your points:

1 - I agree with the full back situation. I think Keane's big concern is height but it's very, very evident that a centre half (Tommy Smith) can not ever be played in this position again. He's a centre half. Full backs need to be able to deliver the ball into the box and he's not the player to do that. Why O'Connor isn't back in the side i don't know. Is he injured? Am i missing something!? I actually don't mind Peters to much there. Agreed he's a far better midfielder but his pace at the back gives me comfort although his lack of height in this division doesn't.

2 - I don't agree that Livermore, Colback, Norris and Leadbitter are the same type of player. Norris is a grafter, a ball winner. Leadbitter is 'supposed' to be our playmaker but he's lost his way a bit. He shows glimpses of it and clearly has talent but it's not working at the moment. For me Colback should replace him and if we need more attacking impetus Livermore provides a bit more thrust going forward which would be good from the bench.

3 - Agreed, Scotland shouldn't be up front on his own. I'd like to see him paired with Wickham but Wickham dropping off in the hole a bit more to collect the ball form the midfield ala Rooney as this for me is where we're massively lacking going forward. Wickham could do a great job in there whether he's holding the ball up or crafting a few passes to bring the widemen into the game. He showed at Forest he could do that on the odd occasion.

4 - Not sure about the Townsend substitution. I don't feel he was playing that well but i don't blame him for that with a centre half behind him. I want reassurances and a license to roam in that position without having to worry about what's behind
me.

5 - Agreed. Leadbitter has to be off set-pieces. Personally, as much as i love him as a footballer, he should be dropped now with Colback and Norris taking the two midfield positions in a 4-4-2.

6 - Don't agree with the foul comment or the third man in the wall. Easy to say that in hindsight but even Roberto Carlos would have struggled to put that one in the top corner. Outside of his boot from 35 yards against a frame like Fulop? World Class strike.

7 - Agreed but if Wickham sorted his touch out on several occasions Saturday and showed a bit more composure then we would have had those quality goals. Not that i'm begrudging him that at 17! If only we'd had Chopra i that situation...

Those players you listed (with the exception of Stead and D.Wright in my opinion had to go. Garvan had his time. When they said he was the 'New Steven Gerrard' i agreed, he looked outstanding but he lost his way. I watched the Palace game away and he was average at best, no better that what we have. D. Wright is the biggest mystery for me, no idea why he went. Stead i feel could have had a good partnership with Scotland and always brought the midfield into the game. No to Counago and whoever else you listed. Although Keane has spent 10 million he's recouped somewhere in the region of 6 million.

Why do i think we lost at Forest? In my opinion, which has been the problem through out and is quite simple....a settled side. Start of the season we were settled playing a settled system. Now it's being tinkered with its become fragmented and a few have lost their way. Some of that one touch football in the second half at Forest was excellent. I wasn't expecting much from Watford or Forest but Coventry was a massive blow, but then again when you're playing against a complete tit like Boothroyd...who knows what's going to happen. I think the integrity of the man speaks through in volumes when you sign a convict for you. Disgrace.

Anyway, still pro-Keane and i'm hoping October is our blip eradicated with two back to back home wins this week and minimal points dropped until Forest. If that isn't the case then i will be all out of patience also. Until then, this is what you play Keane all be it with injuries n'all....

Fulop

Peters Mcauley Delaney O'Connor

Edwards Norris Colback Townsend

Wickham Scotland

Bench: Murray, Smith, Brown, Livermore, Leadbitter, Murray, Priskin

keanish, your spot on with the line up.

i would be happy with that until o'dea comes back to then replace o'connor. leadbitter needs to be dropped. i would even keep smith in instead of delaney as smith for me hasnt done anything wrong at all this season until he played left back against forest.

so what we have lost the last 3 games in a row. watford and forest are horrible and hard places to go to to get results. october was just a blip and we are cetainly going to see improvements from here.

I can see us getting 11 points from our next 5 games before we play the scum away and that in my mind will be good form heading into that game.

Unless we sink into the relegation zone well after New Year I cannot see Keane not being given the rest of the season. I think it is not Evan's policy to change managers mid-season. I can't believe though Keane will be here beyond that. Town have always had a (deserved) reputation for playing attractive football. That is key. That's not what we are getting. Personally "success" at any price is not worth having if the spectacle isn't worth paying to see. Of course certain games may warrant playing more defensively but I suspect that RK thinks he can fashion a team in the style of Man Utd of his day with his 4-4-1 formations but you need some really gifted players to do that and make it work, week in, week out.
I'm really curious as to what has happened to our scouting abilities. We see other teams in this division who have found exciting, pacey attacking players. Why can we not find this sort - not as loans but as signings?

I feel that its a crucial stage in the season- 2 wins and we are back in the top 6. 2 more losses and we could be facing a different prospect (I am sure this won't happen).
POSITIVES
GOALKEEPER
We have good competition in goal. From what I have seen of Fulop and Murphy- both players can do good jobs for us. If anything- we have 2 of the best goalies in this league. Fulop has produced some phenomenal saves this season but has been let down at times by the defence.
DEFENDERS
GM is playing well- giving good cover at times to the other players. TS is also playing well- but might need the occasional rest. O'Dea has looked good when not injured.
MIDFIELD/WINGERS
Good to see Colback back. He is a creative player who adds a bit to the attack. Townsend has shown real attacking pace and good stamina. Livermore looks good on his day also. Norris has shown determination and keeps on running! Edwards has shown glimpses of class. Hyam has done well.
STRIKERS
Wickham is an obvious talent (hence the interest from the Premiership). He is a powerful, unorthodox striker who can cause issues to any defender. Scotland has shown good finishing capabilities. Murray is VERY good in the six yard box (as a straight out-and-out finisher). Lavery is the closest thing to a young Kinkladze that I've seen in a while (though no first team appearances yet- maybe his Kinkladze like runs will be stopped easily in the Championship..)

NEGATIVES
DEFENCE
We DESPERATELY need a solid Right-Back (one that likes to defend not attack..).
Teams can clearly see we struggle in that area and continually exploit it. A team is only as strong as its weakest link. Still don't understand what happened to David Wright- he would have been perfect for the job.
MIDFIELD/WINGER
Rest Leadbitter. His freekicks and corners have been nothing short of appalling. He seems to get worse every time I watch him. Other players must be wondering why he seems to have the God-given right to be in the team..
Norris seems a bit lost at times. Edwards is often "absent" during the game. Loss of Garnan was a shame.
STRIKERS
Never seen Priskin play well. Would love to have kept Rhodes in the team.

Overall,- seems to be more positives than negatives. I am sure that a few people will disagree though! lol

With hindsight ( which is wonderful ) the second goal at forest appears to be lack of a wall to cover the shot , this is down to the keeper and the luck of hitting the ball perfectly ! Is it not time to stop getting on the negative side and accept that not every game is going to be won or played to our full potential , with the talent in the side we will soon be back up in the top six ! Even the mighty Warnock is not winning every game and is likely to lose some before long so stop the chambers / whoppit syndrome and support the team !!!

Ooh let's ignore the awful running of the team and performances and just 'support' the team.

Okay, what have you done with the real Chambers???? :)

meekreech added 20:49 - Oct 25
The team has been managed a lot worse than it is now ! The poor running of the side starts at the very top with non football people running the club ! I have said it before that football is not like any other business and needs different business methods to running commercial or manufacturing companies ! Engineering companies run by accountants are bad engineering companies , but engineering companies run by engineers are better . So it goes with football !

Agree to an extent. Running if the CLUB starts at the top yes, not convinced by cleggy and Evans. But the running of the team is all down to clowno himself, and well :/

bluedragon I think you might just want to read what I said. I said I HOPE we turn it around that doesnt mean that I THINK or KNOW we will turn it around.

Call it naive optimism but I would rather the club sorted the bad run out than have to sack a manager. Strange I know but I just want success. If it means getting rid of Keane so be it, but I would rather it not be resorted to that, Keane miraculously sorts the mess out and we start winning some matches.

Now me hoping that happens and saying it will happen are two very different things mr Dragon.
