Keane: Priskin Needed to Make More of an Impact
Keane: Priskin Needed to Make More of an Impact

Town boss Roy Keane says striker Tamás Priskin could have made more of an impact after coming off the bench at Preston last week. The Blues manager says strikers coming on as subs should aim to emulate his former Manchester United team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

Keane says the Hungarian international, who was left out at Preston having missed a number of opportunities against Swansea, was given enough time to make an impression at Deepdale: “Tamás Priskin had 20-25 minutes last week and you can do a lot in that time.”

The Blues boss says players throughout football appear increasingly reluctant to be subs: “Some people in this modern game — and we saw it last weekend — some players don’t like or want to be sub, which is crazy.

“They go on the pitch and they show you that they’re upset by their body language, not just at our club, it goes on at lots of clubs. It was an important learning weekend for me in terms of the players I’m working with. Lads who want to play and lads who certainly don’t want to be sub.”

Keane says he doesn’t mind players being annoyed at not being in the starting line-up as long as they do their job when they do get on: “You don’t mind a player being grumpy but they seem to bring that grumpiness on to the pitch with them instead of going out there and doing the business.

“There are a lot of big egos out there and some players don’t think they should be on the bench. When they do get on, they don’t really want to do the business because they’re upset with the manager because they’re on the bench.”

The Irishman believes one of his former team-mates had the perfect attitude to being a sub: “When come off the bench you can still influence a game. The greatest example of that, the best player coming off the bench in the history of the Premiership was Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

“There was a player everyone could learn from. The number of disappointments that boy had. He would score one or two goals and be on the bench the following week.

“When he came on, he didn’t come on feeling sorry for himself, thinking the manager’s a whatever. He came on and did the business and scored.”

I wonder how keane would have felt if he had been left on the bench by fergie every game?

But there again perhaps his manager is not a "whatever".

Why does Keane feel the need to keep coming out and berating the players in public? And to say that Prisken could've done more lately is taking the pi$$ in my opinion. He looks like he's trying at the moment but never seems to get a decent run.

Yep, if I had been playing well each week and having to create my own chances due to the way the side had been set up, and having had no service for weeks yet still being praised by supporters for my work rate and how much I had improved this season, then dropped to the bench for a bottom of the table clash, I think my confidence may have been shattered a little, and I may also have felt why bother! Idiot!

Play him on the wing instead of Edwards. Priskin is the most inform player at the club

Legend: thats the point, Keane proved to Fergie that he could never leave him out becuase he proved time and time again he was the best midfielder not only for united but in the world! Pity some of our current players don't adhere to this attitude.

Why on earth was he on the bench in the first place, he's the only one playing well at the moment!

KEANE OUT! NOW

Another great piece of motivation there Keano !!!! Also, how can you compare Priskin and Solskjær?? Solskjær was a world class striker and Priskin barely cuts it in a pi$$ poor league like ours.

Priskin has been our best player in recent weeks anyone agree

Ipswich24 - how standards have slipped for you to make that comment. If Priskin is our best player, it explains why we can't bloody win and we are dropping like a stone. Priskin is a poor Championship level player at best. No offence but standards need to go higher or we will stay down in this crap league for yet another decade.

Priskin is not a super star but he is a striker that we are pinning our hopes on at the moment. I somehow doubt that Keano's style of publicly slagging his players is the best form of motivation.

Keane has stated Priskin is the type of player who needs an arm round him to get the best out of him, so why slate him publicly?

And as stated above, he shouldn't have even been dropped. So what if he missed a few chances, at least he was there to miss them.

Keane's policy of playing a striker because they scored in an 11 vs 11 in training is ridiculous. He should be picking players who play well in competetive matches and who fit the system and tactics.

I dare say it didn't help that when Tamas FINALLY showed a bit of quality and found some form he was kicked out of the starting 11. Way to manage Roy. FORK...

Priskin does need to emulate Solksjaer, our centre-backs do need to emulate Keane and Keane needs to emulate, oh just about any Ipswich manager before him.

Priskin get the fans mam of the match because he puts the effert in, but I am sorry his goalscoring record even a Watford is not really that good.

We so need Bent, Kqui, Mathie, Johnson type player

Karlos - Bent, Mathie, etc had service from midfield, lots of games with their striking partner, and respect. Their managers never put them on the bench for no apparent reason or, after a few days relaxing with friends, came back and compared them to a class super sub who played in a completely different world.

Yes 4 once i agree with u Roy, i've had a lot of time 4 Priskin this year but if your on the bench the best way 2 show the manager he`s wrong is 2 perform not sulk. Tamas seemed 2 b sulking a lot last season when things where not going well 4 him. We can well do without a repeat of that. But it needs 2 b noted that we still need a creative type player in midfield 2 provide the chances 4 the strikers. Its not always the fault of the loan striker if we are not scoring!!!

More fantastic man management from Keane. Priskin has fairly consistantly been our most dangerous player of late. Yes he needs to start putting the ball in the net, but he is hardly going to achieve that if Roy is determined to drop him, slag him off to the press etc.

Honestly the bloke hasn't got a clue.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played for the best team in Britain and European Champions, I'm sure Priskin would be happy on the bench for that! Like to have seen him motivated by Preston!

He is our best striker, he's being treated like crap, Roy once again blaming the players who he is supposed to motivate!

Roy made it in to the sport late and almost missed out entirely, so he has a drive and passion you don't find in players who have come through academies - this is rare Roy, the modern footballer isnt like you!

Priskin might miss a lot of chances at the moment but at least he gets in the positions to miss! And just cause he missed a few chances against Swansea he still looked better than 90% of the other players out there - same as with the WBA performance!

Being dropped for Rory Fallon is an insult!

Seriously Roy, if we lose to Leicester I'll be glad to see your legacy laughed out of the game! Any manager with 20/20 vision can see Priskin's quality!

KEANE OUT FOR LOIFE!

Well here he goes again - If spent as much energy on working the team and his coaches as he does on shootin his ignorant mouth off -we may , just may be in a better position . A Manager needs to motivate and work with players - making comments like this just dont help anyone - Get the Clown out of Town

Put Priskin in 'a good side' playing good attacking football - and he would score for fun.
He has done well will such limited service, albeit he has missed chances but all strikers do that - and, what has he received here in terms of a confidence boost ? - nothing, other than being slated by the Manager, and being DROPPED after being man of the match on occasions. Strange times.

.......will - should read 'with' - been a long day. Being Roy Keane is obviously much more rewarding - and success not obligatory - OK for some.

On this site, readers voted Priskin the Man-of-the-Match against for EIGHT games running recently (Northampton, Millwall, Sheff Utd, Derby, Barnsley, Hull, Norwich, WBA). Is this a man who deserves to be publicly criticised in the media by his manager?

Townsend and Peters are also regularly voted Man-of-the-Match. So, why have all three been dropped?

SouperJim added 19:02 - Dec 17
Mark, because Keane is a complete dimlow who is unable to look beyond his own petty model or what makes a good player and instead do what is best for the football club. FORK!
