Cotterill: Norris Wants to Join Pompey
Cotterill: Norris Wants to Join Pompey
Sunday, 23rd Jan 2011 00:35

Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill has claimed that Town skipper David Norris wants to join Pompey and says the Blues made public his club's interest in the midfielder. Town are understood to have turned down a £250,000 offer for the 29-year-old, who has only six months remaining on his contract.

Speaking after Portsmouth’s 2-2 home draw with Leeds this afternoon, Cotterill accused Town of leaking Pompey's move for Norris: "It went public, it came out their end. It didn't come from us. I've only had a conversation with the manager and [Portsmouth chief executive] David Lampitt has had a conversation with their chief executive.

"We know how it came out and maybe it was to drum up a bit of interest.

"We know that David Norris wants to join us and hopefully that one can be sorted out, maybe in the next week."

Town boss Paul Jewell has said he isn’t looking to sell any of his squad at the present time, although negotiations regarding Norris’s new contract appear to have stalled and the former Plymouth man is entitled to speak to other clubs regarding terms for next season.

Think he will go. Cotterill knows something we do not and £250,000 might be worth it. Norris played well y/day but perhaps its because he is in the shop window? Once he gets his megadeal he isn't going to care about the club. Take the money now and invest in Drury.

One of the reasons he joined us was so he could be closer to his family in peterbourgh. So moving to the south coast seems unlikely.

Absolutely spot on with your comment.

It is the same with the McAuley situation people keep saying why haven't we signed him up yet but it is very possible that he wants a deal longer than 2 years which at his age Town are reluctant to commit too.

His contract has been left because of keane situation, not because clegg don't know what he is doing. Keane was looking for players to fear being out of contract to get the best out of them. The keane mess is deeper than appears on the surface.

Bad News, madness that its been left this late, scored 7 goals this season and is a good player, if ipswich are just offering 2 year deals, and he deserves more hes only 29, then ipswich will lose alot of players. its alrightb saying hes getting older but other clubs will offer more than 2 years and Norris will go for that, remember this is probably going to be his last big contract, what on earth is clegg doing, he was brought in for his negoiation skills!!!

Why do people think that offering a 29 yr old a contract longer than 2 yrs is beyond me, its ok being being cautious but what 29 yr old player who knows there good and have worth is going to except that, be realistic other clubs will just steal are best players with that attitude. anyway this should have been sorted out ages ago, yet again Clegg proves his ineptitude.

The "liability" at Ipswich Town FC, is Mr Clegg. He couldnt negotiate his way out of a paper bag. NOW were are going to lose Norris.

"Well Done " Clegg !!!!!!

My question is if cotteral has only spoken to jewel and his ceo has spoken to clegg, how do they know norris wants to go? Its not like jewel would have told him that. Coterral should be done for tapping him up

dont think he will leave if he gets what he wants from us, this is Cleggs fault for Norris, Mcauley should have sugned new contracts last summer. thats what you get for some prat who know's nothing about football as your chief executive.

Im not his biggest fan but he played very well yesterday getting in behind the front two. didnt look like a player who wanted to go yesterday with that celebration. I reckon he is playing both clubs to leverage that better final career contract and like others have said why go to Pompey if at this stage of your career you want a bit of stability.

I agree with Mickeyjb. I live just outside Portsmouth and Fratton park is a S**thole. I can ony assume if he goes it'l be for money as Portsmouth have nothing better to offer than we do.

get real steve, pompey cannot even afford to pay the better players you have at ther moment, why would he want to join a club who will be losing all of the good players over the next 6 months???

Not sure he's after a pay increase, I think he's just looking for a longer term on something like the wages his on. We stand to loose both Norris and Macca on the same issue.

Look back at the last club FY Figures released. The wages, like many football teams, are at a crippling stage and not sustainable for a club that doesn't pack the stadium week in week out. We have to reduce this bill, it's obvious to anyone with a business sense to offer lower wages to new contracts and not just meet the initial demands of every player.

It's a case of finding a balance, if we don't find one then Chuck will indeed become a pompey player. With or without him we have, in the Execs opinion, a team capable of maintaining Championship status. Town would cash the cheque.

It is vital that David Norris remains at Ipswich, he is an important link pin and a good Captain, to lose him at this time would be very bad for the team and the Supporters, the vast majority of whom respect him as I do.

I find it hard to believe that Portsmouth are in a position to offer Chuck a better contract than ITFC can! If they are offering big money to players then it shows they have learned nothing from their administration nightmare!

I'm not sure what our problem is regarding Chuck's contract. Yes he is one of our higher earners but I'd be surprised if his demands were unrealistic. Offer him a decent deal and he'll stay. Stop mucking about SC and sort it out!

Agree this is agent bigging up move to get
Town to up odds. Jewell knew nothing of interest Friday so clegg clearly dismissed it.Norris said time and time again he hopes to get deal sorted and stay and for me worth the investment loosing captain at this stage Of season could be devastating

Cotterell says ''he wants to play for us '' so its seems theyve spoken, its up to Norris to come out and say so if thats the case ,or make Cotterell look a tw;t Clegg needs a great big size 13 para's boot up his a;se, all this contract stuff is unsettling, FORGET THE OLYMPICS, GET ITFC sorted

How can you build a team around two players who are looking for a way out of Portman Road. The fact that Mac and Norris can talk to other clubs and will be contract free in the summer makes it nearly financially impossible for them to stay. Fortunately Norris is an average player and will be easily replaced. He'll be gone by end of transfer window. He even put a bit of effort in yesterday, proving that he thinks hs's in the shop window.
