Cotterill: Norris Wants to Join Pompey
Cotterill: Norris Wants to Join Pompey
Sunday, 23rd Jan 2011 00:35

Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill has claimed that Town skipper David Norris wants to join Pompey and says the Blues made public his club's interest in the midfielder. Town are understood to have turned down a £250,000 offer for the 29-year-old, who has only six months remaining on his contract.

Speaking after Portsmouth’s 2-2 home draw with Leeds this afternoon, Cotterill accused Town of leaking Pompey's move for Norris: "It went public, it came out their end. It didn't come from us. I've only had a conversation with the manager and [Portsmouth chief executive] David Lampitt has had a conversation with their chief executive.

"We know how it came out and maybe it was to drum up a bit of interest.

"We know that David Norris wants to join us and hopefully that one can be sorted out, maybe in the next week."

Town boss Paul Jewell has said he isn’t looking to sell any of his squad at the present time, although negotiations regarding Norris’s new contract appear to have stalled and the former Plymouth man is entitled to speak to other clubs regarding terms for next season.

I know its a big 'IF' but wonder if he would want to leave if we acheive a draw on Tuesday and he has the chance to lead us out at Wembley?

Players have been doing this for a few years now. As soon as a contract needs renegotiating they make the club aware that others are interested in order to get what they want. I don't blame him as we would all do the same.

keep you nose out Cotterill, if you want him you will have to wait for the summer becasue as with mcA there is no way they will be allowed to leave as they are worth much more to keep us in this league

Bit sick and tired of people blaming Clegg for this fiasco. Clegg is only acting on instructions of the owner and as such has little power and is merely the chief administrator for the Club. If Pompey were not in such an unstable mess and Fratton Park was not the pits that it is, I could understand why Norris would want to go. Pompey still have on paper a premiership team, he will get a massive signing on fee and a long term contract. I agree with others here that Norris will be a great miss for us and you only have look at the games he has not played to see how we underform something that Roy Keane eluded to. This needs to be sorted quickly and I would suggest MR EVANS signs him up before we lose him whether it be Pompey or anyone else. Finally I cannot repeat what I think of Cotterill on here.

Surely it would be better to sell Leadbitter to one of the three W's who appear to be interested and get £2m as £250K peanuts. These two are similar but prefer Norris so give him longer contract as well as big Mac.Get Paul Jewell involved just like Managers used too before the Evans era as our demise is as his and Cleggs fault as much as anybodys!

makes you wonder maybe what they are expecting contractwise, both good players and key to the club at this time so the only reason i can think of that they have not signed yet is that the club cannot agree on their wage package, i would imagine they are both in the top earner bracket of the club at this time - remeber that ME has to bail out the club 7 million every year so minimising that if he can is important. however if we are to progress as a club we need a good backbone on the pitch GMc and chuck are key parts of that. its a ctach 22 situation.
i dont blame them for asking for an increase in wages if possible as it will be probabaly their last big contarct they sign being 29 and 31? from what ive read the last fortnight or so in the star/anglian GMc thinks it should of been sorted a long time ago, which makes me think what he is asking isnt rediculous.
hopefully all will be sorted in the next week to the benefit of everybody.

Me thinks Mr Cotterill is being a bit of a tinker & trying to unsettle our club captain. I,m sure Chuck will sign a new deal with us. We need him so come on Cleggie & sort it out.

I hope Chuck stays. His goal celebration right in front of me yesterday was from his core. Ok, he hasn't perhaps got "blue & white blood" running through him, not many do in real life, but what he does have is 100 % commitment for the club he is playing for.....and i hope it is still going to be ours. Well done boys for a cracking 2nd half and a much needed 3 points.

The situation seems like this to me:

1. Norris has been offered a contract
2. Norris has not signed the contract
3.Norris an now speak to other clubs and is probably doing his best to negotiate the best deal (and who can blame him)
4. ITFC will get nothing if he leaves in the summer and only a small fee now (unless they negotiate or tout him around for a better offer).

If Norris won't sign a new contact, ITFC would be wise to get as much money as they can for him. Would be abysmal management if we let him go for nothing. End of the day though, if Norris won't sign a deal then he will go regardless.

anyone who says ME should go if we dont sign both these players is a fool - unless they know of any other multi millionares who are willing to bail out the club debts year after year.
Its up to ME to crack the whip and get things moving. Clegg needs to do his job i completely agree, takes two parties to agree a contract though.
if the contract demands of Norris or indeed mcauley are unreasonable then clegg wouldnt be doing his job if he allowed them to go through.

I want both to stay however this should of all been settled ages ago, either by signing the players or being in a position where we could command the best price for both of them, not with several months to go and clubs offering low bids because we run the risk of getting nothing at all.

Does anyone think its strange that when we were trying to sign chuck from plymouth, holloway was saying he would only sell to a prem club, hes a prem player. if he rated him so much why did he not try and sign him when he got promoted with blackpool????

Sign him up. Outstanding yesterday and has been for many a game. I agree with most on here that under Jewell's love of attacking football Norris will thrive.

Can't see why he is so desperate to go to Pompey, still a crisis club.

Very worried about contract situation. Perhaps he's playing a watered down version of the Tevez/Rooney fiasco, but the point is we really cannot afford to lose him. And to Portsmouth?!

I think a 2 year contract is very fair for a player who is 30, people saying give him a 5 year contract are off their heads, if he wants to go and we can get 750-1M then that is also a fair price, simply not worth any more at his age, we paid too much.

"We know that David Norris wants to join us and hopefully that one can be sorted out, maybe in the next week."

Cotterill would not come out with that remark without Norris or his agent having mentioned to them that he wants to join Pompey. whether it be money, area, manager or what Norris wants to go.

This is crazy. This guy is our best player by a country mile (Though admittedly the competition is limited !).

Get him signed before worrying about buying anyone else.

4 heavens sake, i cant stay quiet any longer about those on here who are slating clegg . he can only negotiate contracts & transfers in the perameters set down by ME. so if deals fall throughj its nothing to do with clegg being incapable, as many of you think. he just doing all he can with the means at his disposal.

I agree with most of the posts on here. Norris is a good player and at 29 a 2 year deal is sensible for the club, However, you can't blame Norris for trying for something a bit longer.

Lets hope both parties can reach an agreement as I suspect Norris would rather stay but will want his agent to try and do the best for him.

If he does go then as always it will present an opportunity for another probably younger player.

Any chance we might ever see Jaime Peters playing wide right? I always thought that was why we signed him originally.

Unfortunately players loyalty is bought and paid for.
We will see where Norris' loyalty lies in the next 8 days.
Its a fact of life, players dont share the passion for the club, that the fans do.
Shame to lose him, I honestly do rate him, but if he doesn,t want to be here, for whatever reason, then let his place go to someone who wants to wear the shirt.

As for cotterill, what a twonk!

If it is false then Cotterill should beware.

If it is true then Norris has a short memory. Remember when he first came and the club looked after him despite that moronic telephone goal celebration - if he doesn't want to play for us put him in the reserves and let him fester. Don't allow him to earn part of a transfer fee and an increased wage!

Don't care what Cottril says as the bottom line is that Pompey will no way offer the package that Ipswich can and I agree with a previous post that Chuck looked like he still wants to e here. Let's look at the reality

Highest pay = Town
Nicest area = Town
Best stadium = Town
Ambition = Town
Best area for meeting sailors = Pompey
