Cotterill: Norris Wants to Join Pompey
Cotterill: Norris Wants to Join Pompey
Sunday, 23rd Jan 2011 00:35

Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill has claimed that Town skipper David Norris wants to join Pompey and says the Blues made public his club's interest in the midfielder. Town are understood to have turned down a £250,000 offer for the 29-year-old, who has only six months remaining on his contract.

Speaking after Portsmouth’s 2-2 home draw with Leeds this afternoon, Cotterill accused Town of leaking Pompey's move for Norris: "It went public, it came out their end. It didn't come from us. I've only had a conversation with the manager and [Portsmouth chief executive] David Lampitt has had a conversation with their chief executive.

"We know how it came out and maybe it was to drum up a bit of interest.

"We know that David Norris wants to join us and hopefully that one can be sorted out, maybe in the next week."

Town boss Paul Jewell has said he isn’t looking to sell any of his squad at the present time, although negotiations regarding Norris’s new contract appear to have stalled and the former Plymouth man is entitled to speak to other clubs regarding terms for next season.

Come on Cleggy, things are finally beginning to look up, sort it out for feck sake and pay the man a wage that will stop him going to Pompey as it can only be the wage that's tempting him??!!
Norris is our midfield workhorse that all teams need and weighs in well with his goal tally when we play attacking football.
PS Bloody shame we missed Ryan Harley from Exeter City, he's a quality midfielder!

Portsmouth have confirmed they have received approaches for Michael Brown and Richard Hughes.

The midfield pair have been frozen out in recent weeks due to a clause in their contracts which states that if they play one more game for Pompey, they will be entitled to new deals on wages the club claim they cannot afford

ARE WE SURE NORRIS IS KEEN ON JOINING A CLUB THAT CANT AFFORD ITS OWN PLAYERS???

This story has to be litter...

A - Portsmouth is a dump
B - Fratton Park is a dump
C - Portsmouth are an unstable club with no money
D - They're one place above us soon to be none
E - Portsmouth is a dump

If this is the best Norris's agent can do then Norris really needs to get another agent because this is poor on every level.

If he goes he goes, other fish in the sea. People have to realise that football is a job like any other job. A better offer comes along or a lack of an increase in wages or required contract length and players are off. Not unlike any other job. Loyalty, what loyalty???

Norris is not irreplaceable even though he is inspirational, at times.

Norris for Richard Hughes and Michael Brown seems very fair to me. Sort it Clegg.

How does Cotterill know so much about Norris and where he wants to go then? Surely his club would need to have had their offer accepted before he could actually speak to the player? Portsmouth had their offer rejected...Hmmm interesting.

Why sell him for a paltry £250K, I'd rather give him away at the end of the season if he wants to go.

So what happened between november - when this story was published - http://www.twtd.co.uk/news.php?storyid=17429 and now?

Just a guess, but whatever was offered wasn't enough to satisfy norris and/or his agent and they think they can get better terms by either going elsewhere, or at least looking like they are going elsewhere.

Worrying lack of direct comment by Norris. We have all lived through these "situations" before and if the rumour is hogwash the club or player usually makes a statement to dismiss it. In this case Norris is totally silent and the old adage "there is no smoke without fire" appears to be true.
If it is true, the dilemma we have is- sell him now for (if we are lucky) 300,000 or let him leave in the Summer for nothing. If he is leaving in 5 months his priorities will drastically change, especially if we are in a relegation battle with Portsmouth! In that worst case scenario he would be playing for us but his priority would be to see Portsmouth stay up!
Paul Jewell does seem more savvy than Keane, don't think we will lose Norris until he has already been replaced (if its Drury, its Drury)

if he shows this level of disloyalty then he should walk the plank to Portsmouth FC and their mountains of gold. good luck chuck and i will laugh my head off if you go down this year! Hahahahahahaha! i can't wait to see the look in your face on the last day of the season when you are relegated with THEM! i will be watching every game and wishing that you lose. spoilt footballers and their star attitudes. if you showed any loyalty you would sign and thank the chairman after for your new contract. with all the poverty in the world and you want MORE money.

If this story is actually true it makes me so mad. a man who is captain of Ipswich Town Football Club wants to join another team.
if i was captain, it'd make me feel like i had won the lottery. nothing would make me happier, the ultimate success. to wear the blue and white and the captains armband is a dream come true. for him it seems its nothing. it'd make me cry with pride all day and all night.

It is important that Norris sees love and not hate while he is making up his mind about what he wants from his footballing career.
