Jewell Disappointed to Concede Late Again But Delighted With Performance
Jewell Disappointed to Concede Late Again But Delighted With Performance
Saturday, 19th Feb 2011 18:19

Boss Paul Jewell was disappointed to concede a second late equaliser in a week but felt that Town’s performance was as good as any during his time in charge at Portman Road.

Jewell said: “We conceded a goal like last week but I thought the performance, certainly until we scored, was really good.

“I think the three games in a week caught up with us a bit and we looked a little bit tired in the last 15 minutes and that’s why I tried to make a few substitutions.

“It was a good game of football, I thought we deserved to win on the balance of play, but there’s only one stat that counts and that’s the goals. I think we’re making progress and that’s the most important thing.”

Despite conceding the late goal, Jewell was very pleased with the overall display: “I thought that’s as well as we’ve played since I’ve been here, certainly football-wise.

“Doncaster had 406 passes on Tuesday, we had 280 and we won 6-0. Domination and possession are great but it’s what you do with it.

“I thought we were terrific really, the only thing that was lacking was goals. Some of the football we played in the first half especially was scintillating.”

Debutant Andy Drury impressed, particularly in the first half, something which came as no surprise to his new manager: “I’ve been telling people he’s a good footballer, he tired and we were just about to make a substitution when they scored.

“It was a pleasing debut for Andy and we’re all disappointed in the dressing room that we haven’t won the game.”

Jewell confirmed that Aston Villa right-back Habib Beye had decided against moving on loan but says his search for additions continues: “He’s decided he doesn’t want to go on loan and I’m delighted that we know that before he gets here because we don’t anyone here who doesn’t want to be here, so I’m quite happy with that.

“We’re always looking to improve. We’ve been on a good run, but it’s a long-term thing, I think we’ve got to look forward to the rest of the season and beyond, and I’m always trying to improve my squad, like any other manager.”

Hull boss Nigel Pearson thought that his Town counterpart wouldn’t have thought that the scoreline was a fair reflection of the game: “I bet Paul doesn’t think it was. In the first half, they had a lot more possession than us and I thought today it could have been one of those nearly days for us.

“We had a lot of promising situations but were a bit careless in possession. Although we always looked fairly dangerous, we didn’t quite do enough in the first half to warrant causing them too many problems.

“In the second half we passed the ball much better and we’ve got players who are always going to look dangerous and I suppose in the end it’s a good point for us.

“Maybe it took us going behind for the players to believe they could get something out of the game or possibly win it. I’m really pleased for the players that we got something out of the game.”

Pearson was impressed with Jay Simpson’s equaliser and his attitude having been out of the team in recent weeks: “It was a very clever header and it’s been frustrating for Jay being out of the side. It was a good response from him.”

Thought Hull were very disappointing and deserved nothing from what I thought was a pretty uninspiring match overall.

Dont know why everyones saying it was dissapointing. We played some good football and got a good point against a strong hull side. Really impressed bu drury, it will take him a while to get used to the pace of championship football but definatly one to watch.

Jewell: 'Domination and possession are great but it's what you do with it' - sums it up nicely. Lots of good play, but chances? Not that many great ones other than those from distance.

Hull got what they came for. We failed to close the game out after being on top. Much better to watch though - but ultimately a game we should have won - so disappointing.

IF we had have held on this week and last - it would have made all the difference.Forget play-offs now, but from where we were four or five weeks ago, so much better. Something to build on - but Jewell now has to work to ensure we play for 95 minutes.

Foget it, the play offs were never realistic people, it's all about building for next season now, with PJ and a few changes it should be good.

Good to see ITFC playing passing football again. Note the ball being rolled out by Fulop instead of the customary hooping it down the field as far as it will go. Also of not was the way that players switched the ball from side to side. Drury man of the match. Interesting to see who Jewell fields on Tuesday now he has Drury and Bullard in contention. RK would have dropped Drury after his performance but I can't see Jewell doing the same. Priskin for Scotland and Bullard for Martin should be the only changes, although that is hard on Martin.

Can't see how there was 19000 odd in the ground, where do the attendance figures come from?

Why o why once again 2pts lost in the last 5mins we lose them, Norwich gain them that is the different between us, must overcome this problem it was with us also with RK.

Can't believe people moaning on here? After magiltons poor last season and 2 awful years of roy keane we are finally moving in the right direction. How someone can say we were uninspiring? The last 2 saturdays have been dissapointing, but thats football. My main gripe over the last few seasons has not been the results, but the perfornances and the fact that a trip to portman road was not value for money. But i would say todays performance was our best in 3 seasons. Every time we went forward we were dangerous. Next season will be our year, drury has to be the find of the season.i hope we can sign bullard too.

Spot on BluedanW

Great football at times, can't do this all the time or we would be watching Arsenal or Barcelona. This is Ipswich Town on the mend. Amazing what PJ has done in such a short space of time with what RK left behind plus a couple of additions. The real test of how far we have come will be seen over the next three games. But if we play with conviction and confidence as we did today, we may surprise QPR and/or Cardiff

Paul Jewell has got off to a great start and we really look a totally different team now.So what about a couple of late goals, get real people its work in progress and we`ve made quite a lot already from what i can see.

spot on tallguy - it was just so refreshing to actually feel entertained at PR and not like you have just wasted 2 hours of your life. Also detected a bit of atmosphere at times before we scored which was refreshing. Would be nice if the fans played a bigger part from the outset. Having 600 away fans singing 'shall we sing a song for you' is abit apt!

Big fan of Healy and it is so nice to see players such as Martin playing with confidence. Jewell would make a fortune selling books on man management because he is clearly doing something that Roy was incapable of!

Up the town!

Very decent performance lads, particularly 1st half. Drury was excellent and Martin was once again a revelation and his work rate was teriffic - unrecognisable from the player of last season. We just couldn't close it out despite Hull not deserving anything from the game. Although we surrendered a lot of possession after we scored, you could hardly have said the equaliser was coming - a well taken goal but 99 times out of 100, he wouldn't have scored it. Onwards and upwards! COYB!

Wow the first half I thought was watching Barcelona or Brazil we played some fantastic stuff no more hoof ball the goalkeeper now looks to roll it out and that is not because he couldn't before its because everyone wants the ball long may it continue. I thought Drury was excelent he is strong got great eye for a pass good first touch and can deal with ball under pressure rather have someone like him than some premiership hasbeen that's for sure! Thought whole midfield worked so well today was very unfortunate we did not get the win we deserved it but just goes to show one is never enough. I think the substitutes actually disrupted the concentration but just want to say thankyou Paul Jewell for giving me my Ipswich back COYB!!!!

4 wins and 2 draws in 6 games... good solid form for anyone, scoring 17 goals and letting in 7?

my cup is more than half full

disapointing from barnsley and hull yes - but would i of taken a point at barnsley yes - would i of taken a point vs hull, maybe not but on thier current form and their away form being good this season its a solid point - just nearly could of been 3. and i wish people would stop going on about narwich's late late goals. were on a great run and people keep moaning were not doing what the scum are doing. i dont give a stuffed canary! its whats happening with the boys at PR that matters to me.

I wasn't one to get too carried away with getting into the play-offs, in hindsight, dropping 4 points in the last minutes against Barnsley and Hull probably has cost us. With those 4 points we would have been just 7 points from 6th with a game in hand, undoubtedly with a chance. It is a big ask now considering the fixtures we have. Let's just hope the confidence builds and sets us up nicely for next season.

pretty good point to get Hull are on a bit of a run- like ourselfs, but we have to learn to kill games off. Definatly moving forward though and i am actually looking forward to each game now rather than wondering what i have let myself in for.
Drury looks the part and extremly comfortable on the ball just got tierd- along with the rest of the midfield towards the end, which might have been the reason they got in behind us, where i think if we would have had Norris in there who can keep going for the whole 90.
Pleased with the result though and i generally think we can get something at QPR, with Bullard (and possibly Norris) available again. COYB

Excellent performance until we took the lead. Think tiredness played a part. Loads of positives - Martin (again) and Drury were excellent. Was nice to go to a game and be entertained with passing football as opposed to hoof ball(even Fullop has stopped punting it long everytime !!)

Tiredness yes. Hull didn't play midweek and another factor was that Wickham wasn't quite the same after his knock in the 2nd half.

Fantastic to see entertaining, positive football and almost no hit and hope any more. Jewell is preparing the way for a proper promotion push next season. Surely the crowds should come flocking back very soon.

The play-offs were never a realistic target,- and I hope this result has finally put an end to those discussions. We need to build for next season,- and our team shows good promise of a top 6 place next season.
Thought we played well overall. Once again Martin was in good form and it was nice to see Drury playing his part and fitting in well to the team. Once we scored though we got ropey, almost like a boxer that had played his knockout punch. We went very defensive and paid for it near the end.
Koren had good spells for them, but they didn't overrun us and for the first 60 minutes were pretty poor....
Our right side was exposed a few times really badly (as other supporters also noticed). Can see why an attempt to sign Habib was made.

this is awful ' this never would of happened under keane we would have have a good healthy 0-2 defeat. oh how i wish for the good old days when we had good solid losses sometime 6-7 in a row if we were realy lucky. this new manager is just not in the same league as mr roy keane . what are we going to do about this situation ?

Walk_the_Wark added 00:35 - Feb 20
Don't agree on playoff situation..It's still a very real possibility in this league if we continue this unbeaten run... As I've said before Norwich and Leeds will drop out of it

Guthrum added 00:42 - Feb 20
Six games undefeated - the roll goes on!

As for "the playoffs" - I'm afraid I wouldn't want to see Ipswich promoted this season. We're not ready yet. When we go up, I'm looking to a good long run, if not permanent residence, rather than being soundly thrashed most weeks and crashing out after just the one season (parachute payments notwithstanding).
