Jewell: It'll Be Better Next Year
Jewell: It'll Be Better Next Year
Friday, 18th Mar 2011 15:16

Boss Paul Jewell has promised any season ticket holders who might be considering not renewing this summer that Town’s home form will improve in his first full campaign. The Blues are yet to release details of their 2011/12 season ticket plans but a drop in numbers is likely with Town having broken their record for home defeats at this level this season.

Jewell said: “It’ll be better next year. I think the message when we came here was to make sure we stay in the division and if we get another two wins, that would guarantee that.

“I’m aware that results have been disappointing at home lately. Your home form is key because you want your fans to come and support you and enjoy coming to watch you.”

The Blues boss, whose will be looking to avoid Town falling to a fourth successive home league defeat for the first time at this level since 1954/55 when they face Scunthorpe tomorrow, felt fans were far from harsh after Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat to Watford: “I think the crowd have been very good. I’ve been a player and a manager and been 3-0 down at home and been absolutely ruined.

“The crowd were only showing their frustration, they paid good money. They’ve seen a little bit of progress but we’ve lost the last three games at home, which is obviously disappointing.

“The players are disappointed, I’m disappointed, but in a way I’m not surprised. I’ve been saying all along that we’re not going change things overnight here and we are where we are because of what we’ve got.”

Jewell has always seen the task at Town as more than just a quick fix: “I’m not here to say ‘Judge me after a year’ because I’ve got two years left on my contract and I want to be here a long time. Judge me over a period of time.

“Supporters are not daft, they know it’s a work in progress, they know that there were problems before we came.

“What happened was that we won two or three games, one of them 6-0, and one or two people got excited. I did say then to cool your jets and keep your feet on the floor.”

While he cannot be totally blamed for the recent bad run, he is still the manager and if he and the club want to sell season tickets then talking a good game is not the way.

Get a bit of fight back into the players and have a good end to the season and that will help a lot instead of talking it. While it is easy to blame the old regime that is not always going to be possible.

Look at the Scunthorpe manager, only took over during this season, and already has found himself sacked. You don't hear him blaming the last manager or the players he has to work it. He was the manager and responsible for results on the pitch.

Sounds like PJ is having a bit of a dig at the players there...

I suspect we will hear much spin over the coming weeks - as Clegg attempts to flog season tickets. It will be a tough sell. We will no doubt here how sales will affect money for transfers. However, bottom line is it's been quite frankly dreadful yet again this year. The previous manager of course has to take much of the blame, but looking at the past four home games, Jewell has been the manager and despite one very good half against Pompey it has been equally as poor. In fact the last two games were possibly worse that anything I have seen under both Jim/Roy.

Sadly, I fear Jewell's one up front at home tactic (other managers have been slated for playing this way) will end up costing ITFC thousands of season tickets, as people have to weigh up whether they can justify spending in these hard economic times on a poor standard of football.

I just hope Jewell shows a bit more attacking intent in the coming weeks to encourage people to buy - starting with TWO up front tomorrow.

While I agree that this season is lost anyways and we should expect some new faces coming in before the next season starts and make the team better, I don't know how Marcus Evans feels about that story repeating for a third time since he came on board...Somebody comes as a Manager and says "I am here for the long run and I need cash to spend in order to have a shot at promotion and don't judge me for the current bad form of the team" and after spending considerable amount of money nothing really changes... For me it should all start with getting the RIGHT manager. I hope Jewell proves me wrong the same way I hoped that Keane will do, but for me young managers are facing a tough Championship and they can't cope with that. Again I will state that CURBISHLEY is the best choice ever for us. He will stay calm over the problems and will create a very good team. Not players, stars and etc. but a good working team. Forgive me about talking stuff that is impossible now, but I am just angry at our decision makers that they don't see something so simple?!?!
Anyways - good luck Paul Jewell. Hope you transform this team next year and do a "QPR" thing.
Up the Town!!!

We pay, primarily, to be entertained. We are, generally, a good-natured, patient and stoical bunch of supporters, who will pretty much leave the ground contented with a point, or three,or occasionally none, as long as we have seen a good game. I will get my season ticket regardless - but why should the club expect hard-pressed households to cough up hundreds of pounds to watch the kind of abject sh*te we witnessed against Watford last week? I hope Jewell is given the support he needs to make his pledge come true. I trust him.

I really hope people don't stop coming because of this season, all down to Mr Keane in my opinion. How jas can say the last two games were worse than anything under Keane is ridiculous.

Jewell has brought a new style in that we can all look forward to next season when hopefully we are able to express ourselves a bit more, this is evident with the signing of Bullard and even andy drury who for a non league player supposedly worth 150k was a great signing, as opposed to one of keanes first signings - grant leadbitter. Plus he has said eventually plans to play 442 as everyone wants him to, surely he would be shooting himself in the foot saying that and then not following through with it. He had success at wigan with that formation so why would he do anything different? Once he has his team in place I'm sure he'll play with two up front and attacking wingers.

I think its only fair that we judge the new manager after a full pre-season of rebuilding and whatnot. I hate how cynical people can be, what do you want him to say? I fully expect the headline of this to be true so why do people complain? Don't blame Jewell for the position we finish this year.

Whatever happens regarding the rest of the season Evans is going to have to find a shed load of money to fund another rebuilding job because this team is just not good enough!

Only a massive cut in Ticket prices (season and matchday) will see sales rise, people that have left will already have allocated their money elsewhere...........
One thing I know for sure it isn't gonna happen under current regime.
The same regime that rewards season ticket holders by helping others get in for a Tenner..........

Jewell sounds NOTHING like Roy Keane; neither accent nor content! Give him a break some of you!

Let's judge the guy when he has had time not after weeks. As for last few games bring worse than any under keane, Norwich away, Sheffield united last game of last season, Newcastle at home and that's of the top of my head! Cant actually think of any game win loose or draw under keane that I actually found entertaining, my hope is we see more of the Portsmouth game football but with goals this time!!

I think this season hurts even more due to Norwich playing so well and flying high. But that aside, we simply haven't got enough talent in our squad, Bullard and Wickham are probably the only two players capable of getting into another starting eleven in the Championship...there needs to be a lot of work this summer that's for sure..
I honestly think that season ticket sales will be at an all time low...unless a few big names arrive to give people some hope!

im pleased im not the only person who thinks we are totally crap. We have the likes of hyam, troy brown, eastman, smith , wickham, ronan, lambe, peters, martin and lets build the team around these lads.Wouldnt it be great to see these lads being the next 3 to 5 years at ipswich.Do we really need the likes od maculey,dd,scotland ,priskin, odear, leadbetter, edwards, murphy and possibly norris.Look what burley did when he took over.

Good post Jason0999 - spot on, whether people like it or not.

Equally so broomfield123, I agree, we could do much worse than follow your suggestion.

On paper at least, collectively this squad is more than just capable, and should be doing much better than it is - down to the Manager (whoever it is) to shape it, and make something of it.

The football we play is obviously a key factor but i think the club have forgotten about one thing where they might get just a few more season tickets sold...THE PRICE! On average we have the highest season ticket prices in the championship and we also come in the top 5 of the premier league for highest season ticket prices.

Garv - 'don't blame Jewell for the position we finish this year ' !!! - who do you suggest any blame should be attributed to then ? , Keane ? (no doubt some will still blame him for the next ten years), the crowd ? (for not making enough noise), etc; etc; ..........
Incidentally, as many will know, I was probably Keane's biggest critic - but I don't, and cannot, blame him for what happens now and in the future.
The buck stops with the Manager and his Senior 'bods' - whatever.

I generally believe that next season will be better. It's un fair that pj is getting a little bit of stick already. He inherited a average football team playing below average almost every week under RK. We are but all most safe and we have to remember when PJ had taken over that was the main objective. If we would have still had Keane in charge we would in my opinion be in real trouble of going down. Lets stuff Norwich at home and finish the season well. Lots of patience required over the next couple of years.
