Town Targeting Coventry Keeper Westwood
Town Targeting Coventry Keeper Westwood
Friday, 6th May 2011 22:25

Town are understood to be close to landing out-of-contract Coventry keeper Keiren Westwood. The Republic of Ireland international was previously targeted by the Blues when a Carlisle player in the summer of 2008 before joining the Sky Blues for £750,000.

Westwood, 6ft 2in tall, started his career with hometown club Manchester City — coincidentally at the same time as Brian Murphy - but failed to make a senior appearance while at the Eastlands-based club or during a 2003/04 loan spell at Oldham.

The following summer he joined Carlisle where he spent four seasons and made the League One PFA team in his final year before making his move to Coventry.

The 26-year-old has won seven full caps with Ireland, for whom he qualifies via his grandmother, but has been withdrawn from the three internationals at the end of the season due to a shoulder injury.

Speaking on Thursday, Blues boss Paul Jewell said he is close to making his first signing of the summer: “We are very hopeful of maybe completing a deal next week.”

Town have offered new terms to out of contract keepers Arran Lee-Barrett and Brian Murphy, while Márton Fülöp only has one more year left on his deal and the Blues could look to cash in on the Hungarian international this summer.

Saturday’s opponents Leicester, Leeds, Wigan, Everton, Wolves, Newcastle and Celtic have all also been linked with Westwood.

Meanwhile, former Blue James Scowcroft has tweeted suggesting that Crystal Palace could be the club which skipper David Norris will join this summer. The Eagles made an unsuccessful £800,000 joint bid for Norris and defender Damien Delaney in January.

Wigan, Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Portsmouth are all also believed to be interested in the former Plymouth man, who is understood to be leaving Town having been offered a two-year deal by the Blues and not the three-season contract he wants.

Surely he'd be a bench warmer for all those clubs except Leicester anyway?
Come here and get some coins for Fulop.

Not another bl--dy Irishman, oh I forgot, it would be ok to sign an Irishman now Keane has gone.
By the way only joking, if he is good enough who cares where they come from

If we could get Westwood on a free transfer and sell Fulop, say for £500K, that would be a wonderful bit of business. When was the last time Ipswich came out on top of a deal? We usually buy expensive players then lose them for free transfers or nominal fees!

Norris may leave Ipswich for Palace? Hahaha. That's ambition for you.

.... Mark - show's you how highly he rates our club's ambition - he may just be right.
As for Westwood - another load of hype to be fed to the naive and easily convinced, is my guess.

Would be a very good signing - particularly on a free. Can't undertstand why Norris would want to go to Palace? Can only assume ex-Town players at the club have convinced him?

Westwood wasnt in the Coventry squad today against Norwich so maybe this story is true. I admit I havent done my homework so he may be injured - but if not.....then maybe, just maybe its true. Would be an excellent aquisition but im not going to get excited unless he has signed on the dotted line!

The only reason we would get him is if no bigger club wants him. And if they don't, he can't be all that good can he?
