Jewell: Offer for Doncaster Duo Was a Fair One
Jewell: Offer for Doncaster Duo Was a Fair One
Tuesday, 17th May 2011 08:50

Town boss Paul Jewell says he feels the Blues’ £2.6 million bid for Doncaster duo James Coppinger and Billy Sharp which was rejected last week was a fair offer. The Blues manager says the pair are just two players on his list of potential summer signings.

Jewell said: "We made what we felt was a fair offer for the two players. Doncaster turned it down. That's their prerogative.

"We feel they have the qualities that will add something to the squad we have here, but they are just two of a number of transfer targets we have. We're talking to other clubs and we will see what develops from there.

"We are doing our homework on the players we want to bring in but it's important that we have more winners in the dressing room.

"I want a goalscorer or two who will do anything to score a goal. Not just on match day but in training as well. You have to have that hunger from Monday to Friday to score goals, not just on a Saturday. There has not been a 25-goal-a-season striker here for a long time, going back to Darren Bent's days.

"If you have that goalscorer in your team, it makes the team more confident that if we go a goal down, we can get back in the game and win it. I don't think we have that devilment, that type of player who will kick his granny to score a goal."

Town offered Rovers £300,000 for Coppinger and £2.3 million for Sharp. Over the weekend, Doncaster chairman John Ryan said he expected the Blues to return with further offers.

Both players have two years left on their contracts at the Keepmoat Stadium, while Exeter City are entitled to 15% of any profit Doncaster make on the £35,000 they paid for Coppinger, a former Grecians team-mate of Town coach Sean McCarthy, in 2004.

Love the quote 'that type of player who will kick his granny to score a goal' LOVE IT PJ!!

I think one more offer between 2.6 - 3 Mil for sharp and 500K for Coppinger. IF no then Go for Maynard!

I agree £3.5 million for the both of them and if rejected move on.

The only thing is these are his number one targets so now we go for second best.
Feel we should push and only change target if the players so no, If the players really want to leave any club they will as contracts mean very little these days

I think we need to sign Sharp - I'm not really at all bothered about Coppinger - £3m should see Sharp join us. - If Clegg doesn't mess up the terms like usual!

It's all becoming rather boring that poor old Cleggy gets a negative mention on nearly every post regarding possible new signings. I hope these negative posters will give him due credit and say well done, when we do sign someone!!!

im amazed if we dont go back in for them both, this is either very clever or we are just moving on. I would of thought we would test the water before jumping in...

£3M NOW or move on...

We were linked with a move for Maynard a few years back before he joined Bristol for a fee of about £2M
We were linked with a move for Elokobi a few yeras back before he joined Wolves for a fee of about £300K
We were linked with a move for Izaguirre a few years back before he joined Celtic for a minimal fee and became player of the season and is attracting every PL team.
We missed out on Westwood, Simeon Jackson, Rickie Lambert, Hooper, Scott Sinclair, Mattock, Pitman, Austin to name a few...

Don't get me wrong, I like that we have a wage structure and we shouldn't break the bank for anyone, not even Jimmy(?), but I'm getting tired of missing out on obvious targets who must be seen as SAFE investments and whom we are guaranteed to have made money on from a future sale... Why can't we close deals?!!?!

The inevitable "other irons in the fire" comment, as predicted. Expect a second bid in a week or so, but I suspect it'll be our final offer.

Can anyone else see us spending a few million quid on someone who then promptly gets sent to prison for a few years for assaulting his grandmother...

I have it on good authority that Billy Sharpe has been to Playford road this week already - Know this as my uncle lives within a stones through away on Playford road and basically has a very lonely life looking at the comings and goings to the training ground....
I know that means nothing in the Attempt to sign him but he has been there..
Also Mr Clegg turned up there yesterday afternoon with what he calls a tall Black man with a bald head???

Jason Roberts anyone?????

I bet Exeter are worried that any deal might be structured with an overpayment for Sharp and underpayment for Coppinger so that the sell-on is limited.

I know we like to sign old over the hill players but i didn't even know ghandi played football????

But if he's under £2m then lets sign him up and give him a go.
