Bowyer Signing Confirmed
Bowyer Signing Confirmed
Sunday, 10th Jul 2011 21:40

Town have confirmed the signing of Lee Bowyer on a one-year deal with the option of a second season. On Wednesday, TWTD reported that the midfielder would join the Blues on his return from his holiday ahead of this week's pre-season games in Holland.

Having put pen to paper on his contract, the former Birmingham, Charlton, Leeds, West Ham and Newcastle man will now meet up with the rest of the squad, who flew to their Eindhoven training camp this morning.

Bowyer says he's pleased to be joining Town: "There was interest from other clubs but Ipswich is the right choice for me.

"I know all about the traditions of the club and the history after working with Sir Bobby Robson at Newcastle. I know it's a family club but having met the manager, I know it's also an ambitious one and that's very important for me.

"Everything I heard from the manager was very positive. He wants to get Ipswich back in the Premier League and I'm looking forward to playing my part in trying to make that happen."

Blues manager Paul Jewell added: "We're obviously delighted to have signed a player of Lee's quality.

"Anyone who has seen Lee play over the years knows he is a winner and he will bring that winning mentality into our dressing room."

News of Town's interest in the 34-year-old one-time England international first broke last Saturday with Leeds, Derby and unnamed Premier League clubs also believed to have shown interest in the controversial 5ft 9in tall Londoner. The Blues have also hinted that there could be further transfer news on Monday.

Elsewhere, former Town loanee Gianni Zuiverloon has completed his move to La Liga side Real Mallorca.

Daley, I'm shocked at your allegations of racism and bigotry against fellow-supporters, based upon a fatuous link to our welcoming a new player to the club. A poor comment I feel.

If you read any of my posts on this, or any other topic, you will see that I have never accused anyone of racism. I also take deep exception to Daleyitfc's comments as it happens. You'll all, no doubt, be delighted to know that I won't be making any more comments on TWTD. I have my reasons for disliking Lee Bowyer - but those reasons are for me to know and you to surmise. Thankyou and Goodbye.

I can't disagree with a signing of a quality player based on his personal life otherwise i would struggle to be a football fan. Bowyer should bring experience, decent passing and goals to our midfield.
However can we please clear up his convictions. Bowyer was cleared in 2000 of affray during a racially motivated incident, however he was convicted of the same offence while racially abusing a worker in a fast food restaurant in 1996.
I am not here to judge and I am not here to manage my football team, I am here to support and I will cheers, along with EVERYONE inside Portman road when Bowyer bangs in a screamer.

DaleyITFC - my family is from north Africa, am I a racist as I have no issue with this signing, mainly due to the fact of his current record NOT his past. We all make mistakes when we are young and say things we don't really mean. Please go support another club. Basically it boils down to you being an ignorant fool who has only succeeded in angering other loyal town fans.

COYB - more signings this week please.

What bowyer was involved with was hardly the same as driving without an mot, so who ever posted that comment about Edwards needs a better argument and quite frankly needs to grow up, racism is an ugly act of cowardice.
My father first took me to portman road in 1970 , with my stool to stand on,and have been a fan ever since. My father died in 2ooo, his ashes are now buried beside PJs dugout. My father hated racism, but he loved itfc and he loved sir Bobby and as posted b4 by others, sir bobby felt he was worth signing.
Now everyone on here is, or should be a town fan, so now he is a town player can we all get behind this signing, it was his past and we are now his present and immediate future. I watched a film called invictus last night, about Racism, forgiveness and sport , helped me realise people do change. So lets get behind him until he gives us a reason not to. Welcome to PR.. Lee...COYB

I must admit im uncomfortable with the signing. For the past decade ive wanted to put my foot thru the screen whenever i saw him and hav regularly said"i wouldnt want someone like that at my club" to west ham &nwcstle fans. Im not holier than thou, nor am i two faced and fickle and will support the shirt whilst trying to forget whos wearing it.

Even if you choose to ignore the racist charge no one can dispute that this is one of the most despicable individuals ever to grace the football pitches of this country. Right up to (& including) last season he has always looked for an opportunity stamp or kick. As bad as Keane was at least he wasn't a coward. Those of who support this signing are contributing to the darkest day in the history of our great club
