Bowyer Signing Confirmed
Bowyer Signing Confirmed
Sunday, 10th Jul 2011 21:40

Town have confirmed the signing of Lee Bowyer on a one-year deal with the option of a second season. On Wednesday, TWTD reported that the midfielder would join the Blues on his return from his holiday ahead of this week's pre-season games in Holland.

Having put pen to paper on his contract, the former Birmingham, Charlton, Leeds, West Ham and Newcastle man will now meet up with the rest of the squad, who flew to their Eindhoven training camp this morning.

Bowyer says he's pleased to be joining Town: "There was interest from other clubs but Ipswich is the right choice for me.

"I know all about the traditions of the club and the history after working with Sir Bobby Robson at Newcastle. I know it's a family club but having met the manager, I know it's also an ambitious one and that's very important for me.

"Everything I heard from the manager was very positive. He wants to get Ipswich back in the Premier League and I'm looking forward to playing my part in trying to make that happen."

Blues manager Paul Jewell added: "We're obviously delighted to have signed a player of Lee's quality.

"Anyone who has seen Lee play over the years knows he is a winner and he will bring that winning mentality into our dressing room."

News of Town's interest in the 34-year-old one-time England international first broke last Saturday with Leeds, Derby and unnamed Premier League clubs also believed to have shown interest in the controversial 5ft 9in tall Londoner. The Blues have also hinted that there could be further transfer news on Monday.

Elsewhere, former Town loanee Gianni Zuiverloon has completed his move to La Liga side Real Mallorca.

If he was good enough for Sir Bobby, then he's good enough for me.

I've said before that I just don't like Bowyer as a person, but as a footballer he will definately bring some much needed gile to the midfield, I support ITFC & will therefore give Bowyer my full 100% backing whilst he he wearing that blue shirt, congratulations to PJ on capturing Bowyer, Please Lee, keep your nose clean.....

Good comments about Sir Bobby, by Bowyer and fans here. Robson has done us more favours than we realized in regards to players wanting to join us. I think Chopra also made reference to the great man.

excellent signing, seems a bit weird having it confirmed on a sunday night. All those people talking about bullard,Do you think that if we sign him that evans/clegg would also release the money for Sharpe? I know who I'd rather have.

I think the days of players being finished at 32 are over. I see phillips got himself another good deal this weekend. Look at kilchsko in boxing, 35 and in amazing shape. As such bowyer can do a job for two years easy like giggs, scholes, etc. We are getting a top player here. But we need pace and creativity to balance like alex ferguson insists on!

Bad day for ITFC - I guess this is the final nail in the coffin of the friendly, family club we once were.
By the way I AM GOD - I'm not tucked up in my bed yet. Just got in from having a life. You should try it some time.

Right, I've had enough. How dare you (Daleyitfc) make that kind of comment. You know what makes me "ashamed"? It's 'fans' like that. In fact, it's people like that in general. How about some people get behind their club, instead of making snide, inflammatory comments. If you don't want to be a supporter of this club, then get out and don't come back.

he was acquitted of the racist accusations for everyone who keeps ranting about them....... get a grip, shut up and move on......

this will be the best piece of business we will do this season with the possible exception of shifting a relatively unproven 18 year old for 8m plus add ons.......

The fake morality surrounding this club sometimes astonishes me. Hypocrisy beyond belief. Bowyer has never been committed of anything and as far as i know has played with many black players, if he was a racist then they wouldnt have. He has made mistakes, like most people i know!

Can only agree with the last few comments, I'm no racist, & for you (DaleyITFC) to accuse me & others of being so, just because we are welcoming a new player to our club is frankly a disgrace & shows what a complete ignorant & un-informed person you are. Everyone of us has a past or history, of things we wish we had or hadn't done. Surely it would be better to allow Lee Bowyer a clean slate & let him show us first hand what he brings to our team, & if then he proves to be the person you believe him to be whilst wearing our shirt, then maybe you will have genuine reason to have a go, until then keep your naive opinons to yourself.

Great signing, not sure about captain material but would prefer him having the armband over Leadbitter. Chopra and Bowyer are two signings that will make the rest of the Championship take note. Like Garv says Sir Bobby has benefited the club further. Jewell is able to sign players that we could only speculate about under Keane.

Great signing but we really need to sign a top quality striker, without this I doubt we will make the playoffs.

I think we can forget about Bullard, shame really but just cant see it ever happening.

Can Daley please be banned? He is worthless and so are his comments. 65 posts so far and only 2 negative ones. I indeed am not a racist like my fellow posters are not either, and for that matter Lee Bowyer was not proved to be one either. Please do 1 Daley, you are not wanted.

DaleyITFC what a stupid comment. I work in a large multi-cultural school in the north-west where one of my responsibilities is anti-racist education. I have worked with both the 'Kick It Out' and 'Show Racism The Red Card' campaigns and have also been on demonstrations against the BNP. Yet because I and many others welcome the excellent signing of Lee Bowyer you accuse us all of being "racist bigots". Well, as has been pointed out on here many times, Bowyer was found NOT GUILTY and therefore has the same number of convictions for racist crimes as I do - NONE. One of the great principles of our democracy is that of the right to a fair trial and to be innocent until proven guilty. If you want to judge a man (and loads of supporters) by your own prejudices then fine but if you look up the word 'bigot' you will find that it means someone who is intolerant and that seems to be a description better suited to yourself than the many Town fans on here celebrating an excellent signing.

I'm not convinced Bowyer had nothing to do with the incident 10 (?) years ago. He was charged with nothing, which must suggest even a bit of innocence when his teammates were. However, either way, for me its in the past. Like many have said, if he was good enough for Sir Bobby, he's good enough for me, Paul Jewell and ITFC.

Suffolk n good & ipsuefa - spot on.

Could not have put it any better. Can't believe the level of stupidity on here sometimes. To accuse people of being racist because they will welcome someone to our club is beyond belief and very insulting

Now for the striker, another centre mid, winger, right back, centre back and a commanding goalkeeper IMO. I think we need more height in the team, we lost McAuley who was 6ft3 and replaced him will Ingimarsson who's just 6ft. Would love to see Olofinjana from Hull with a bit of height in the holding role. Also, IMO we need a striker with abit of height, a younger Iwelumo or Kuqi type. There's no height with Chopra, Ellington, Scotland (needs to go), Murray and Priskin's main strength isn't in the air.
