Evans Linked Again
Evans Linked Again
Saturday, 16th Jul 2011 23:54

Town are again being linked with Sheffield United striker Ched Evans. The Blues have been mentioned in connection with the 22-year-old Wales international on a number of occasions since May.

Boss Paul Jewell is reported to be looking to land the 6ft tall frontman for £1 million from the newly-relegated Blades. Evans was previously chased by former manager Roy Keane prior to his £3 million July 2009 move to the Blades from Manchester City.

As a schoolboy, Evans was with Chester City but moved on to the Citizens in 2002 when the Deva Stadium club's youth set-up closed.

The St Asaph-born striker made his senior debut for Manchester City in September 2007 in a Carling Cup tie against Norwich City, who he joined on loan in the following November with his opportunities at Eastlands having been limited to five starts and 15 sub appearances, which yielded one goal.

In six months at Carrow Road, the Welshman made 20 starts and eight games from the bench, scoring 10 goals, one of those against the Blues in a 2-1 Town win at Portman Road.

For Wales, he has won 13 caps at full level, scoring two goals, having netted nine in nine for the U21s and one in four for the U19s.

Evans, who has one year remaining on his £15,000-a-week Blades contract, had a difficult first season at Bramall Lane, scoring only four games in 23 starts and 13 matches as a substitute.

Despite Sheffield United’s poor 2010/11, Evans enjoyed a better campaign, scoring nine times in 27 starts and eight sub appearances. Even so, he is likely to be available for a fee significantly lower than the one the Blades paid for him. Tony Mowbray and Middlesbrough and Norwich were also linked earlier in the summer.

Town boss Paul Jewell recently lodged a bid for a striker and as of Thursday was still waiting to hear back from the player's club. An offer for a winger has been turned down with rumours in Cardiff this evening linking Peter Whittingham with Town.

Any chance of us making an offer for the United States' Abby Wambach?..looks more useful up front than Priskin ever has.

Nice one Lightningboy! Abby W. did miss a golden opportunity to put USA in the lead, though. While we're about it, why not sign up three or four of the Japanese team? We could really get our passing game going then, and (at the risk of being labelled sexist) they are much prettier than Priskin too.

Pjewellisagod, i dont understand people like you, writing off our football team off b4 a ball is kicked. Yes i have been disappointed in a couple of the signings for sure, but there are a couple of decent ones still to come. I wont write us off untill the numbers say it cant be done. I live in Diss and i have bet many narwich fans we will be taking their premier place, Foolish? maybe, my point is we dont need total negativity such as yours, you dont even know our team yet!!! COYB

Forget Evans, Sharp etc - Whittingham is the player we should be after - he is class and it is beyond me why he isn't being signed by premiership clubs. With him in the team we should then get a strong, pacey defensive midfielder and decent centre back I think we've got enough for now. And let's look to Holland etc for these - there must be some gems in the Dutch league dying for a chance in English football for a club like us.

Why have we stopped spotting talented players from the lower leagues/abroad that could improve the team and that in few years time may be worth a packet?
Playing 30+year olds means we're cutting off this potential income.
Get a decent scouting structure in place and stop taking expensive shortcuts.
BTW still no news on our imaginary bids...

With all the teams now back in pre season training there is no way a team like Cardiff are going to accept an offer for one of their best players unless it is too good to refuse, so anything less then 3M for Whittingham would be laughed at, let's just face facts, he is not coming here, it will be more freebies or players that clubs want off their wage bill, Evans will not spend big money.

tractorboy2434 u are completely wrong if the bid is high enough they will accept

Ryanblue4life i completely agree. Cardiff are clearly in a transitional period. If they sold Chopra then they could just as easily sell Whittingham

Right now we have the following strikers in the first team...

Scotland
Priskin
Chopra
Ellington
Carson
Murray

Pressuming that scotland does leave as has been rumoured, we still have 5 strikers in the squad. i still believe we could do with another striker but £3m seems a little expensive when all i believe we need is a backup in this area. perhaps take a punt on a striker in the lower leagues ( Davies from Chesterfield, Le Fondre from Rotherham) who would be hungry and relish a chance in our league and also would be less of a risk than Evans.

Question - where are we weakest? Answer Central Midfield (creativity and defending/pace), Central Defence and Right back. Agree about chasing the likes of Treacy and Whittingham (improve us) but why this obsession with another striker? Chops plus a.n.other looks fine to me if we aren't chasing games!

Long way still to go until transfer window closes, I think the signings so far have been good and look forward to others coming soon. COYB

I am underwhelmed with the prospect of Ched Evans coming, partly because Blades fans seem only too glad to be rid of him, but will of course support him to the full if he proves to be the target.

Could be a handy player to have in a relegation scrap. Been there before and has experience of the drop.
No credible sources have mentioned Whittingham going anywhere...yet. He expressed and interest on twitter (apparently..) 10 days ago that he was interested in a move to the Premiership with QPR or Norwich.
We should be making another 7 or 8 good signings before the season begins to make sure we avoid the drop

Just returned home from work and my refresh button on the TWTD home page doesn't seem to work, it keeps bringing this old article up and not today's article regarding the triple signings of a quality striker, creative midfielder and centre back!
