Evans Linked Again
Evans Linked Again
Saturday, 16th Jul 2011 23:54

Town are again being linked with Sheffield United striker Ched Evans. The Blues have been mentioned in connection with the 22-year-old Wales international on a number of occasions since May.

Boss Paul Jewell is reported to be looking to land the 6ft tall frontman for £1 million from the newly-relegated Blades. Evans was previously chased by former manager Roy Keane prior to his £3 million July 2009 move to the Blades from Manchester City.

As a schoolboy, Evans was with Chester City but moved on to the Citizens in 2002 when the Deva Stadium club's youth set-up closed.

The St Asaph-born striker made his senior debut for Manchester City in September 2007 in a Carling Cup tie against Norwich City, who he joined on loan in the following November with his opportunities at Eastlands having been limited to five starts and 15 sub appearances, which yielded one goal.

In six months at Carrow Road, the Welshman made 20 starts and eight games from the bench, scoring 10 goals, one of those against the Blues in a 2-1 Town win at Portman Road.

For Wales, he has won 13 caps at full level, scoring two goals, having netted nine in nine for the U21s and one in four for the U19s.

Evans, who has one year remaining on his £15,000-a-week Blades contract, had a difficult first season at Bramall Lane, scoring only four games in 23 starts and 13 matches as a substitute.

Despite Sheffield United’s poor 2010/11, Evans enjoyed a better campaign, scoring nine times in 27 starts and eight sub appearances. Even so, he is likely to be available for a fee significantly lower than the one the Blades paid for him. Tony Mowbray and Middlesbrough and Norwich were also linked earlier in the summer.

Town boss Paul Jewell recently lodged a bid for a striker and as of Thursday was still waiting to hear back from the player's club. An offer for a winger has been turned down with rumours in Cardiff this evening linking Peter Whittingham with Town.

Interesting debate developing here. On one side Sharp and Chopra would be prolific if our midfield is creative enough (signing Whittingham would enhance that no end) BUT the pair are very similar. Maybe Ched Evans would improve the balance of the side and offer another dimension to our attack. His goal scoring record has been pretty poor over the last two years. Hmmmm.....

It's all very well splashing out on strikers and creative midfielders but we need to bolster the defence or are we going to play a system of we're going to concede goals but we're going to score more goals than you?

I think that Evans is the target, its not all about goals its about providing the foil for the partner upfront with you.
Look at Chopras record with Bothroyd, he provided and Chopra scored.
Sharp is a similar player to Chopra and Jewells teams all seem to prefer a big guy, small quick guy partnership.
As for Whittingham, proven quality Championship player but reported to be on huge wages, thats the only reason Cardiff would want to part with him.

Dream on all of you people thinking we are going to spend 5M on players, Evans has short arms and long pockets, I am beginning to think we will start with what we have, what a surprise, although I must admit to be being fed up with the constant speculation which is all just that and never comes to anything, be glad when the window is shut and we can start playing, although the reality of how far short of a decent team we are will then hit home.

Many people here mentioning that he's not the goal scorer were looking for but thats why we've brought Chopra. Ched Evans would bring a different dimension. Its about building a balanced team so he would be a good signing.

i think its all pie in the sky, i never get excited untill the pen has been put to paper.

how ever out of sharpe, sordell, evans or whittingham i would defo go with whittingham, are sides for years has lacked decent service, just look at the last team to supply decent service was back in the days of bent and kugi and look how many goals they scored, unforchantly are defence back then was poor.

i say the pair of srtikers needs atleast prob 10-12 decent passes for goal scoring oppotunities to bag atleast 3 goals, unforchantly over the last few years i would say during a match we have given about 5-6 at the most.

under keane some matches at home we had to wait 25-30 mins before the first decent goal scoring oppotunity came our way.

that aint good enough, so with a decent midfield with 2 quality old style wingers bombing down the buy line then putting in the cross ball and a quality midfielder putting in that killer defence splitting pass then we will be on our way.

so with carson on the right and either whittingham or martin down the left with bower plus one other in the middle and i dont mean leadbitter ( he only passes side ways or backwards) then i think we will see a good team playing exciting football, just hope the defence gets sorted though lol

Blade in peace......

Che Evans is one of the most over rated players we ever signed. He gets in good positions but then hits the ball over more often than not,and he's lazy too. He's also injury prone and for me spends far too much time on the treatment table and is one of the main reasons, along with that lump Henderson,we got relegated. Also,he has an accusation hanging over his head which is being investigated by the police, not sure if it's been dropped or not and i do only say it's an accusation.

But hay,i can't wait to see the back of him so i hope some club signs him very soon and gets him out of the Lane.

Good luck for the coming season guys!

Poor goal scoring record recently and has played for Norwich. Like others would much prefer Sharp, but that looks unlikely. We have already signed one striker who is out of form and struggling to score goals - signing two would be a big risk IMO. Am more interested in the rumours linking us to Whittingham - that would be an impressive signing.

WHITTINGHAM!!!! what a player, would be an amazing left footed winger for us. Jewell must do everything to sign him.

I have close sauces with the Football Club, I know Paul Jewell and he said we are close to completing the signing of Charlton's highly rated youngster Geoffrey Pancake.

Geoffrey (Panners) Pancake you say? I see that as very unlikely! We can only dream. Last I heard, he was on the Mourinho radar.

Taylor15 - Barry bl00dy Ferguson, please no! I'm hoping that was just a rumor that you heard down the boozer. Having said that I do have a slightly bias opinion of him having seen play for Rangers over the years, if you support Rangers he was and still is god but if you don't support Rangers he's kind of like Robert Fleck (or for younger town fans Robbie Savage) kind of opposition player but 100 times worse! But, on the very slight chance he did sign, then i would have to support him, on the field at least.

Anyhoo, Ched Evans.Well not my first choice but if PJ could get him to compliment Chopra then fair enough.

Like most though I would prefer we were concentrating on defenders now but if players like Whittingham are available we should pounce, that would be a signing that would make me very happy.

Ha. The world ended when Chopra and Bowyer signed then?

johnhazelbum added 12:22 - Jul 17
chopra, bowyer and evans could be a good inflence on our younger players. Not.

Taylor15's info come from here

Pinch of salt needed for a lot of them, although there was a brilliant one about Luca Modric.

Im not sure i want this one, although there could be potentail there. I still feel sharp would be a great signing even if we do overpay a tiny bit for him, but whoever King Jewell decides to sign i trust it will be a good signing

COYB!

Garv - Haha, I was all for them signing so would have to live by some of the words i said, especially about Bowyer. I had an encounter with Barry Ferguson in Glasgow once, nowt serious, it just further enhanced my opinion of him, but if he if was in the right kind of blue then i would have to try and give him a clean slate! Haha!

Love all the comments about not scoring enough goals etc.

If he scored 7/8 goals and Chopra scored 20, I think i'd be pretty happy with the pairing. Like some have said, you need players that compliment each other, too many people on here like statistics from computer games for my liking.

I couldn't possibly comment on his suitability with Chopra as he's one player i've not managed to see a lot of, but I have faith in PJ and his ability as a manager to get a team together.

I've like a lot of what we've done already. Just one/two players short of what i'd consider the strongest squad for quite some time, good mixture of youth, experience and the odd potential player thrown in for good measure.
