Ward: Referee Made Correct Decision
Ward: Referee Made Correct Decision
Wednesday, 27th Jul 2011 00:16

Colchester manager John Ward said he and Blues boss Paul Jewell agreed to abandon Town’s pre-season friendly at Colchester along with referee Darren Deadman after U’s midfielder Andy Bond suffered a serious facial injury in the game’s closing stages. Ward revealed Bond lost a tooth and was unconscious for 30 seconds before he was helped to an ambulance at the side of the pitch with blood streaming down his face.

The U's boss said: "It was a fantastic game and we've had a sad ending with a player getting quite seriously injured.

"He's had a little bit of concussion and has lost a tooth - he was out for about 30 seconds. He was totally disorientated - that's why the referee made the correct decision agreed by Paul Jewell and myself.

"Our sole concern is the health of the player. The fact that he walked off was a major bonus, given what we had feared."

Asked to comment on the booing by some Town supporters, Ward added: "You had better speak to them about that.

“The Colchester United fans had total respect for what went on. Other people have to be responsible for their own actions."

I suspect those who booed are unable to string enough words together to explain their actions, even if they were big enough to admit to doing it.

Shame the game had to end in this way...it was played (as a friendly) in the right spirit, not over competitive, but as a good play/train exercise run out.
£15 for a friendly, plus £6 to park, was perhaps some of the reason for some the Town Supporters reaction of the abrupt ending?

Completely understand the annoyance of some fans, not to the point of booing the player as he was helped into the ambulance however!

a bit outrageous to boo someone who was knocked out lost a tooth and could hardly walk, I was at the game and felt ashamed to be part of the town support after the booing, I hope he is ok and has a quick recovery.

I completely understand the boo-ing. The guy was stood next to the ambulance laughing with the paramedics. Yes I understand he was injured at first but there is no need to take the p*ss. Don't think the abandonment was necessary but hope the player makes a swift recovery nevertheless.

I dont think it was the guys decision to call the game off SuperReuser to be fair.
Yes annoying but his well being comes first. To be honest another 8 minutes of that sh*te and I may have needed the ambulance.
Our 'fans' booing doesnt suprise me really. We used to have a great reputation...not anymore.

What is wrong with some of our so called 'fans' that they have to boo because they lost 8 mins of their sad little lives? Some might feel last nights performance was a pantomime but booing is the sort of stupid ignotance you get either in the x-factor audience or at an Aladdin panto at the Paladium! FFS, grow up and support the team and realise it was a friendly and a serious accident happened. If you're that upset, then go and ask for your £1.33 back for 8 mins of lost time. I'm fed up of poor fans never mind poor football.

I think the many fans that booed were booing because Bond got up and was helped over to the tunnel, and not straight to the ambulance. Many of us stayed behind waiting to clap him off as he went, and were quite surprised when he got up and walked off. The fans that booed would not be boing because they lost money, but because they would have felt cheated out of the last 10 minutes when they saw the player get up and walk off. Obviously the didn't know how severe the injury was, none of us did, which is why we were hoping to give him some respect and clapped him off.

As for dragging the club down with 'fans like this', what do you expect, it's football. It's not like they all go around having little tea parties with the queen is it. Football is a very hooliganised spectator's sport, those whining should know that by now, yes, they should have been more respectful and no doubt they would have been if they actually knew how badly injured he was.

So, you are only injured now if you're on a stretcher?
The guy's knocked unconscious, loses a tooth, a lot of blood and has the balls to get up and walk and you boo him for it? He should have been applauded simply for not being a big jessie like so many footballers.

Deliasplums... whilst i agree obviously we dont want to see people getting knocked unconscious.. nor do we want to see 'big jessies' on the field... surely you agree it should not have been abandoned? I think the fans we're booing more about the frustration of the abandonment that the actual player himself

Some of the fans that booed were the same fans that sang 'loyal supporters' and then proceeded to sing a song about Justin Fashanu. I mean, really?? In 2011? At a friendly match? You need to take a long hard look at yourselfs. you low life, half brained morons! It's not a good look.

I wish Andy bond a speedy recovery, and want to see Col U back in the championship.

Although I didnt boo last night and would no way endorse fans that did, I was very angry last night. 1st of all I had the shambles of trying to park my car which was just a joke, no signs, no parking and the carpark I did try to get in tried to charge me £8 for the pleasure! When I eventually did park up, I then had to que for 30 mins at a ticket office that resembled a cubicle! After paying £15 for the priviledge I then spent a further 5 mins trying to find spare seats for me and my 2 mates I managed to catch the last 15-20 mins of the 1st half before paying £3.60 for a horrific beer before the debacle of the 2nd half.
Look I dont think even think thefans that booed this guy who was injured coming off were doing it because they were morons it was probably becuase they had simular experience to myself. Why build a stadium with no infrastructure, signage or proper organisation, at what point did people honestly think town would only take 1200 fans for a local game (not derby we only have 1 of them!) when we had just signed 2 more players who it was widely reported would be playing, I found the whole evening shambolic and a real disapointment which cost me nigh on £25 for.
