Jewell: No New Signings For The Weekend Thursday, 4th Aug 2011 09:58
Disappointed Town boss Paul Jewell says he’s not now expecting to add to his squad before this season’s opening game at Bristol City on Saturday. The Blues have been trying to land Blackburn midfielder Keith Andrews on loan and another unnamed addition, while Jewell confirmed that, as reported by TWTD on Tuesday, Slovenian youngster Aljaž Struna has been at the club this week.
Jewell said: “There won’t be any new signings for the weekend unless something comes out of left field.
"We were hoping to have one, maybe two [new signings for Saturday], but for different reasons they’re not going to happen. Hopefully they can happen in the next couple of weeks.
“I think it’s important to stress that it’s not all about Saturday, whatever the result Saturday - good, bad or indifferent - we’re still going to try to improve the squad.
“I’m disappointed in the way one of the clubs has behaved in the… I’d like to say negotiations, but there are no negotiations when someone won’t answer your calls.
“That’s one disappointment. Maybe they haven’t paid their bill. Maybe they’ll come back to us later in the week.”
Blackburn’s Keith Andrews is likely to have been one of the players Jewell hoped to have signed with the 30-year-old Republic of Ireland international understood to want to join the Blues but with clubs yet to agree the terms of a loan deal. The other player’s identity, probably a centre-half, remains a mystery.
Jewell refused to be drawn on the identities of his targets: “I’m not going to comment on names because we could be here all day. There are lots of names which have been bandied about, I think sometimes people just pick them out of a hat and luckily sometimes they might strike lucky.
“There’s no point in me talking about speculation and saying yes or no to names because we could be here all day.”
The Town manager did confirm that FC Koper defender or midfielder Aljaž Struna had been at the club this week, although the Slovenian U21 international, who celebrates his 21st birthday today, has now returned home: “He’s been training here. We’ve had him here for three days’ training just to have a look at him.
“The lad’s from Slovenia, he’s connected to a club and his club were good enough to let us have a look at him and we might pursue that in the future. He’s a midfield player who can also play at right-back.
“It’s really in the very early stages. Don’t write that we’re going to sign him, we’re just having a look at him.”
Jewell reiterated that he has given up on his attempts to bring former loanee Jimmy Bullard back to Portman Road from Hull: “We’ve spoken to [Hull’s head of football operations] Adam Pearson a number of times over the summer and I’ve spoken to Jimmy.
“It’s something that we would love to have done but financially it’s out of our remit. We’d like to have had Lionel Messi but we couldn’t afford him and I think Jimmy might be on a little bit more money to honest!”
The Town boss confirmed that he has a fully fit squad for Saturday's trip to Ashton Gate.
Elsewhere, former Town loanee Darren O'Dea has joined Leeds from Celtic for the season on a similar basis.

Not a good sign if another club won't even return calls? Can't be Blackburn surely as Andrews was looking around the club earlier on this week.
I guess it's the Central Defender who we have been after and Arsenal have more things on their plate with Fabregas and Nasri so maybe it's them and they aren't answering any calls in case it's Barca!

in PJ we trust.. i can feel the good times coming back
Right you now have it in black and White from the main man. Jimmy Bullard is not coming. So don't bother going on about it. The guys a good player, but a liability on the injury front and overpriced in terms if wages as despite his claims it's all about the money.
The line is drawn please can we all move on and focus on a positive start to the season.
I was just going to post 'WOT? NO BULLARD STORY" but then, to my utter, utter delight, he crept in there at the end. Phew!
So, we still can't afford his wages? And this was the situation 3 months ago too? No change at all? OK. Great. Keep us posted on how this story continues to not change, upping the ratio to minute-by-minute updates if possible. If this story is continually not changing, then I want to intimately know the rate at which it's not changing, by fully appreciating the flux at which the situation is staying exactly the same. Thanks.
Disappointed but what will be will be and we have to move on. I too suspect Blackburn are not playing ball over Andrews. Don't believe that any signings made today or tomorrow would have played at Bristol. I agree re Bullard Paulc lets forget Bullard.
Really thought we were going to see the two new players this weekend, what with all the buzz surrounding them. But, with or without them, I'm still looking forward to the begining of this season, more than I have done for quite a few of the past seasons.
Oh dear, I bet Aljaž Struna will go somewhere else now. Good player ( by the YouTube clip) but now his name is out there, I bet other clubs what to look at him also and take the gamble at a cheap 400k. Town have spent more on certain players in the past and nothing in return!!! Take the gamble now COYB
No surprise. The club would have yet again been better advised to say nothing rather than raise expectation.
More concerned to read PJ's comments that he doesn't have the players to adopt a 4-4-2 formation and will play a one up front, five man midfield. Very disappointed. ITFC will I fear become known as being a boring team. I can also see attendances falling dramatically at PR. This is no surprise however, as I have been telling people since his appointment that PJ is a negative one up front man.
PJ's failure to address the defence this Summer (3 x CB out - just 1 in) is bitterly disappointing as well. Where is the RB?

Well, it just proves that "PJ" is a regular visitor to this site! ; )
Jas you couldn't be more wrong when you you mention jewell is negative because that simply isn't true if you had of read what he has been saying during the close season you would seen him say he likes to pass it on the ground.
Just because a team play's 4-5-1 doesn't mean the team will play negative does it i do hate people who look at 4-5-1 and think it's always negative no it's not .
I can certainly tell you that with the players we have we certainly won't be a boring team to watch this season and your not happy about us not getting our defence sorted out well PJ is probably still looking so bit to early to moan.
You seem to forget it is not just us who are after players in the championship there are many other clubs ater the same targets as us so just remember that will you and surely you must give a big appluase for how well jewell has done in the transfer window this close season.
I thought i say something jas because ever since jewell arrival i have notice quite alot of moaning from you to the guy give him a chance and sorry if it seems i am targetting you but i just had to react to your comment
Jas for goodness sake - playing wing backs and two fast wingers is hardly boring. Get off the four four two wagon its a red herring that people see as the most attacking formation......
