Jewell: We Want to Keep Keith
Jewell: We Want to Keep Keith
Thursday, 22nd Dec 2011 13:07

Town boss Paul Jewell says he spoke to on-loan midfielder Keith Andrews at training this morning and reiterated that he’d like to keep the Republic of Ireland international at Portman Road beyond the end of his loan in January. Yesterday, the 31-year-old said he felt the club weren’t doing enough to try to keep him for the second half of the season.

Jewell said: “The agent met the owner and Simon Clegg on Monday and they spoke and I spoke with Keith this morning.

“We’d like to keep Keith and I think he’s keen to listen to what we’ve got to say but there are a lot of factors before a transfer like this can happen, but the key thing is that we want to keep him.

“Whether we can keep him is down to a few factors — money and Blackburn amongst them. I know there are a lot of teams interested in him because he’s done so well for us and we’d like to keep him, but whether we can is down to lots of things.”

Jewell says Andrews has intimated that he was happy at Town and would be interested in staying if a deal can be done with both Blackburn and himself.

I note Andrews moans about his previous employers and is already moaning about not being offered something by Town. Ask not what your club can do for you but what you can do for your club. Perhaps Ipswich are baulking at his attitude? That said I like the idea of him being our captain long-term.

He's done well, but are we thinking long term Mr Jewell?

It's not that difficult - Andrews has to accept a much lower wage than on at present and Blackburn clearly want rid to reduce wages.

Yes, why should Andrews walk away from his contract which has 18 months to run, but if he wants to play in the Euros he needs first team football, not a sub appearance here and there.

I can see another 6 month loan with view to a free transfer at the end of the season. Suits Andrews as he gets first team football and suits us as we avoid a transfer fee.

Andrews is a leader, and a goal scorer. We must sign him if we can. He should be our captain, and, whilst he's not a massively long term captain, he can certainly go on for a good couple of years, especially at this level...

Another 6 month loan would be ideal i think. I don't think we want to commit to another huge contract with an ageing player, He's on £20K a week at Blackburn, so it would be at least £15K a week you would think. We need to get the wage bill down, to do that we need to start signing younger up and coming players and building a team for the future.

Can't see this one happening...we need to be careful,we've already broken the bank with Jimmy and that's backfiring (at the mo)...would like to see us offload Leadbitter in jan & use that money to sign Andrews.

I really dont get some of you ppl in here.
KA its 31 years old he is not 40 and we need to sign this guy ASAP. He has scored lots of goals for us and I think he could get 20 for us this season if we sign him.
He has at least another 2-3 good seasons in him so why you dont want him I dont know.
Find me another middfielder out there who can get at least 15 goal per season.
He has lots of premiere league experience so even if we do go up in the next 2 years we allready have him.
You tell me who from our current team can play in the premiere league apart from KA? I think none.

He certainly seems to be the right sort of player to captain the side. I know people point to Jimmy Bullard being something of a disappointment this season following a great loan spell, but I wouldn't want to rule Bullard out just yet. He is a top quality player, and I anticipate he will find form again soon. He looked bright coming off the bench last weekend, so maybe he could force his way into the team alongside Andrews. To have both of them in form would be fantastic.

i think keith andrews is a really underrated player, and i've no idea why he wasn't first team for blackburn. they need someone like that. however, as much as i like keith andrews, does anyone else think that this scenario could be the same as bullard? bullard was too, outstanding in his loan, and now he just hasn't sparkled.. anyone think keith could be the same? would love to think not!

We have to sell Leadbitter in January and use the cash to get this guy.

Don't like to put Leadbitter down as much as some do because I don't think you can fault his effort, but he's never really done anything here (even in his first season in which people say he was good), goes missing in games and simply doesn't seem good enough.

Andrews himself has gone missing in games this season but he makes up for it with goals, and nine in less than half a season is fantastic. Leadbitter sadly does not.

Yes sign him if we can but dont be held to ransom. We could always use one or two of our younger players !! Hyam O'conner Peters Smith ect i for one am not convinced we would be in a worse position now if we had used these players instead of the older loanees.

h32, agreed, need to tie this deal up ASAP, Keith has been one of the few bright things to have happened this season. May i also wish you a happy Christmas & may we continue to agree/disagree in 2012. COYB.

pinewoodblueboy - cheers pal - likewise to you and yours for the Festive Season.
Don't know if you take the EADT - the back page makes interesting reading today, and sums the Club, and it's current lack of ambition, up well.

Some will say paper talk - but these are quotes from Andrews himself.
Not at all impressed with this - but sadly not at all surprised.
To me it shows how much we are all taken for granted - and fed bullsh#t by you know whom.
