Crewe Boss Yet to Hear From Jewell
Crewe Boss Yet to Hear From Jewell
Saturday, 21st Jan 2012 08:33

Crewe boss Steve Davis says he’s heard nothing from Blues manager Paul Jewell regarding Town’s rebuffed offer for 17-year-old midfielder Nick Powell. Davis continues to play down the Blues’ interest in the England U18 international but TWTD understands the Crewe-born youngster was the subject of Town's weekend triple bid, along with Portsmouth pair Joel Ward and Jason Pearce.

Davis says he’s personally heard nothing and questions whether Portman Road would be the right place for the highly-rated youngster to progress his career: “I would have thought Paul Jewell would have contacted me if a big offer had been made for Nick.

“No disrespect to Ipswich, but would it be the right club for Nick? They’re battling relegation and you have to ask ‘is he the right player for that situation?’ Anyway, I don’t think Ipswich would have enough money to buy him.”

Town are understood to have made an offer of £1.3 million for the midfielder plus milestone clauses, but the Railwaymen are believed to want at least double that initial fee as well as top-ups. Chelsea - where ex-Crewe boss Steve Holland is assistant first team coach - and Arsenal are amongst a host of Premier League sides monitoring Powell's progress.

Despite the Blues' interest - a second offer is likely to be on the way - Jones says he wants Powell to keep his mind on his game: “The main thing is Nick concentrates on his football. Until my phone rings and someone says they have made an offer, then nothing is happening as far as I’m concerned.

“If something does happen I will be honest and up front with Nick about it, but he’s got to remain focused on his job.”

I like to think out squad is good enough to do somethin in the second half of the season and we wil finish mid table but we need to start now! This is based on thinkin the egos of the over paid bunch would not allow them to be relegated to league one.

Well it sounds like the Crewe manager doesn't mind letting him go. But we can't overbid as it is a big gamble.

The Crewe boss seems to be speaking common sense to me and saying exactly what I would expect him to say in this situation.

The Crewe manager says he doesn;t see why this guy would want to sign for Ipswich. I agree - who would want to play for one of the worst managers in the country? PJ OUT!

Couldn't agree more with the Crewe Manager .
If the lad is that good a prospect ,what is the point of him coming to us ,with the distinct possibility of him being kicked to bits in Div 1 next season .
PJ cracks me up ,he's like a Politician .
In recent weeks ,now the pressure is mounting ,he seems to cave in to the supporters and appears to be making decisions just to appease the frustrated .
Problem is ,is that his targets are not realistic .
A England under 17 international ,who is on the radar of the big clubs and two of Pompey's brighter stars .
Do me a favour Mr Jewell .
Let's get out of this mess ,get back to mid table at least , and then you may be able to attract some decent staff .
You don't fool me buddy .

if we expect players of any note to come here they wont come for the imminent glory, only way we'll get them through the door is a van load of money. Now aint the time to be tight, pay what you have to to get players in to keep us from the drop, it will cost you far more if we get relegated, have no fans watching, no sellable players, oap's on huge contracts etc

Crewe fan here in peace guys.
Having read through all the comments, there are a few of you slating our manager and a few considered comments.
As one of your guys said he only said what any manager in his position would.
He has said he has heard nothing from Ipswich with regards to a bid - on our website he also said that he is in daily contact with the Chairman, something missing from your story.
Did not see the ' don't think that Ipswich would have enough money', so not sure if your journo has added that bit in, but he did question whether he would be the right signing for a team in your position - a 17 yo with potential??
From reading your comments, a few of you are unhappy with Jewell and maybe he is playing mind games with talk of signings??
Personally I think Powell will stay at Crewe until at least the summer, where he probably go to one of the big guns, who will probably loan him out to probably a Championship team next season, so you never know.
Probably go for a lot more than 2m too - Oxlade Chamberlain went for 11m, so on that line we should be looking to get 4-5m minimum with add on's.
For the record, I've been a Crewe fan for over 40 years including the 8 seasons in the Championship between 97-06 and Powell is definately of that standard now and will be a future England player bar injuries.
In other circumstances a move to you guys would be a good stepping stone for him, but we do harbour hopes of a playoff place ourselves this season and you are hovering above the drop zone- doubtful, but we could both end up in league 1 next season?
Also Davis is a new mangager for us with only 10 games in charge so far with 20 points from them - and we love him - he is everything that our previous manager wasn't - Dario Gradi, who btw is our Director of Football/Academy Director now, with our academy being of a very high standard - we are aiming for category B status- not sure where that compares to your academy, but that is where we spend all our money, so while Powell is still at Crewe he will not stop improving due to any training ground/facility issues.
Really do hope you finish the season well as always liked you guys - a proper football club.
Just watched Escape to Victory which I had forgot was full of your old legends too :)

Wasn't Chris Hogg a few years ago meant to be the next big thing when we signed him from York?.

Hey I love Ipswich, I watched them in the 60s when I lived in Essex. Under Robson they were great,
Most of the comments on here are so ill-informed. Jewell is trying to keep his job by making ridiculous offers for players. Aren't you supposed to have a mega-rich backer?
If this is the case then why did you sell Wickham?
We have had bids from Arsenal and Liverpool so why sell to a club in the Championship who are struggling?
We will go the Crewe way and develop the lad and he will go to a club that we feel right for us and for him and sorry that won't be you
Oh good luck for the rest of the season, I hope you stay up, always look for your results

Oh by the way it is Alexandra not Alexander

You go on about your academy I suggest you look at the link below
