Lavery Joining Sheffield Wednesday
Lavery Joining Sheffield Wednesday
Saturday, 12th May 2012 00:07

Former Blues youngster Caolan Lavery is joining newly-promoted Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. The 19-year-old Northern Ireland U21 international had been without a club since turning down a short-term contract with Town at the end of his extended Academy scholarship in October.

After leaving Portman Road, striker Lavery spent time on trial at Sunderland, Leicester and Bradford, who were alerted to his availability by former Blues coach Brian Owen, now a scout at Valley Parade.

The Canadian-born frontman impressed the League Two club but the Bantams were unable to agree the compensation which was due to Town as Lavery is under-23 and had been offered terms and their interest subsequently waned.

In January, Lavery trained with SPL side Kilmarnock, who signed ex-Town Academy defender Rory McKeown last summer, and appeared close to joining them before the move broke down.

The Owls are also understood to have offered terms to right-back Callum Bennett, who recently turned down his offer of a one-year contract at Portman Road.

Best of luck to him. Clearly not overly rated by the management who are better placed to make a decision on him. He may go on to be a star - he might not ...

I've never seen this young play so can't comment on whether he would have made the grade or not so good luck to you Caolan, I hope you do well at Sheff Wed. What does concern me though is that a similar move is being mooted for Callum Bennett. Again I have never seen him play but what is going on here? Callum is an Ipswich boy who I believe went to Copleston School and as such one would imagine he would love to play for his home town club at the highest possible level. Remember how Brian Talbot would almost die for the cause and Terry Butcher although from 40 miles up the A12 (Yes I know some clever dick will point out he was actually born in Singapore) almost did bleed to death for us, surely we should have made this young man an offer he couldn't refuse and not flaff about with a one year contract!

jas - spot on. Lot of people jumping on the bandwagon on here that every young player we release is a star in the making.
Wobbleswick - we do have that reputation, but not every bunch produces first team players , and thats always been the case. Sometimes they just arent good enough. I cant comment on Lavery as i havent seen him play but i would bet several of u on here slagging the club off havent either.

Coalan, must be fed up of the idiots on here slagging him for no reason and without knowing the facts . Sheffield Wednesday must be great move . Why would he stay here on a 6 month deal and no opportunity of any progression .Young players will be appreciated elsewhere,it is too easy to say we dont produce any good young players, how do we know? No Reserve Team games,No interest from the mangement therefore no progression.

The six month contract Ipswich offered would have run from November to April, so it would have expired now anyway meaning he would have been free to join another club now or accept a new Ipswich offer if one were made. So instead of staying with a professional Championship club on wages for those six months, with the chance of earning a better deal, Lavery has been unemployed.

H32 - I can't actually recall many people at all saying that the sale of Jordan Rhodes was a good thing for ITFC when it happened so I'm afraid you've got that one very wrong! This spoilt brat just thought that his young potential alone gave him some given right to demand a lucrative long term contract. A case of pure greed and no big loss, we deserve to watch players who want to play here for the right reasons and if he was one too, he'd still be here...

Dissboy, what's your point? No-one knows the ins and outs of the Bennett situation but wherescounago's point is that a local lad should be running over broken glass to PR to play for his hometown team. It seems not these days but who knows what advice he is receiving. Our problem though is that if we can't attract the local lads what chance have we got with the wider world?

To the points being raised about not having a good academy, we've made 10 million quid give or take over the last two seasons from 2 very talented young strikers coming through our youth set-up so i'd say our academy is as good as it's ever been!

Plus we have Ainsley, Hyam and Smith all part of the first team set-up. Peters could also be included in that. I know there's none imminent but lets see how Lawrence and Wight get on this season...

Keaneish.....i make you right......sense at last. However these young lads need a chance but under Mr Jewell the opportunity is less for them . Of the lads you mentioned only really Tommy Smith has had any sort of run in the team and probably at that time no disrepect to him but that was down to injuries and suspension and other crap signings being no good. Of the boys coming through Whight has been a pro for a year and had no progression and Lawrence at least seems to be the next golden boy. Even poor Josh Carson continually gets overlooked for guys who aint that good or has beens. If we had given Carson and Hyam for instance a full season this year to gain experience would we have been and worse off than the the pitiful 15th place we achieved? I dont think so! Include the signing of Reece Wabara on load .A complete joke.Just cos he played for Man City.Whight,Bennett or Jones from our youth set up could have been promoted to sit on bench. Its crazy!

Oops! Forgot Carson in that bunch!
Safeashouses - I like everyone on here is a big believer in the bringing youth through but every youth is an individual and for individual reasons they've been held back, not given games or played in spells. The biggest mystery is Hyam I guess but as for the others, it seems right to me they haven't been utilised much.

Tommy Smith - his confidence took a massive dip both at the end of Keane's management and at the start of PJs when he got sent off at Peterborough. So understandably he wasn't going to start too much bit injuries forced the issue and he's taken his chance well and long may it continue!

Carson - still isn't fit enough...which is a joke and something he has to sort out.

Ainsley, Whight and Lawrence - jewell probably feels aren't ready abs maybe he's right.

Hyam - as I said, bit of a mystery! The only thing I can think is that PJ maybe felt he wanted to hold him back a bit more for this season given we'd have a reduced squad. A run of games last season to get experience and unleash him this season!? Who knows. All a not odd as he did well until the Brighton fixture.

I have seen Lavery on many occasions and he is good and if you call £200 a week greedy you must live in a dream world why not admit Jewell cant train young players and feels comfortable with older players.
Look at the coaches NO COACHING badges with the exception of Webster says it all they are all old mates of his he even lives with one of them

radiogaga - suggest you get your facts right before you post.
Everything I stated was factual, and as I said the people referred to 'know who they are'. People have short memories, when it suits.

The Club is currently an absolute farce.

What is the point of having a youth team then not offer these boys a decnt contract?! If there good enough to be offered a contract then at leats try to tie these boys down. How many more Scot Loach's/Tom Eastmans/Jordan Rhodes do there have to be before the penny drops with the club??!

Questions have to be asked of Clegg as all the current contract policy is failing, end of. Smacks of us constantly trying to keep/buy people on the cheap. These days in football, nothing is cheap and you will never get anywhere turning over half your squad at the end of each season! Exasperating!

Thing that gets me on here is how do people know he left only for money? At 19 I seriously doubt the lad left only because of money and I'm pretty sure it was more of a career decision. No reserve team games, no chance of progression. Banging in goals in any game he got a chance in yet never brought near a 1st team that where struggling. I know the lads agent and he has told me Caolan money was never the problem but of course he will say that.

Firstly he has been at Sheffield now for several months so old news and secondly as with bennett the issue is not and never has been the money sometimes its wrong manager wrong time - interestingly the owls fans don't have a good word to say about jewell who dessimated their youth as well
