Jewell: Chambers Making a Good Impression
Jewell: Chambers Making a Good Impression
Monday, 9th Jul 2012 20:22

Blues boss Paul Jewell says new signing Luke Chambers has made a very good impression in his short time at the club. The 26-year-old former Nottingham Forest skipper signed a three-year deal earlier today.

Jewell told the club site that he was never in any doubt that Chambers, who joined his new team-mates for a gruelling double training session with new consultant Steve Williams prior to this afternoon’s press conference, would commit to Town: "We're obviously delighted to have Luke at the club.

“The deal's been going on for a while for one reason or another but from the first time we met, I was confident he would sign for us, even though there were a few clubs in for him.

"Luke comes across as a very honest type and he's certainly made a very good impression with everyone at the club in the short time he's been here.

"Colin Calderwood took him from Northampton to Nottingham Forest when he became their manager and that's always a good sign.

“He's always played well against us and he can play as a full-back as well as centre-half, which gives us another option if needed. He's a leader as well and that's what we want from him on the pitch."

Meanwhile, contrary to rumour, former keeper Richard Wright is not training with the Blues at Playford Road having left Preston after a very brief spell last week.

Elsewhere, ex-Blue Gavin Johnson, 41, has joined Thurlow Nunn Premier Division (formerly the Ridgeons League) side Walsham-le-Willows.

Goes without saying I think !

btw reading this latest report it kinda makes a total mockery of the drama queens at EADT (Archant) about Jewell's/ Town's inability to secure this quality signing.

No, not skipper - let him and his family get settled in the area without the added burden of captain. Apparently he struggled as captain of Forest last season (although there were other problems too).

Can't believe Gavin Johnson is still playing, thought he'd be a player that would retire early as he always had dodgy knees when he played for us.

Gavin Johnson gave me one of my greatest memories as a Town fan, when he powered in a bullet header in the FA Cup replay at Anfield. We filled our end and were going mental. Happy days.

While he will one day be skipper, i agree with BudapestByBlimp. Edwards did a reasonable job as Captain, and Chambers seems a good communicator, who doesn't need the armband to lead on the pitch.

yes having thought for a moment agree with you both on the captain issue.

But He is definitely Club Captain material in the future.

great signing, hopeful of more to come. Like others I reckon captain in his second season once he's settled and assuming his performances warrant it.
We desperately need a new keeper, I've heard that Tom Heaton has left Watford after a few weeks of signing for them. Does this mean Loach is now unavailable or that Heaton has something wrong with him?
I'd gladly see Gavin Johnson back here as a player. He was almost bald when he was in his early 20's, did relatively well for us until that moment at Anfield, when he became a hero! Then Dozzell's goal and we were in dreamland until Molby took a free kick 10 yards further forward than where the foul was committed.

Bluey420 A true " Nottingham" Forest fan here who can honestly confirm that Chambo became a liability with his lack of pace and bottle, if Cotterill hadn,t bought in the loan defenders in january we would have been playing Colchester next season, sorry to put a damper on it but a 3 year contract for him is mental
all the best for next season ................You Reds

Let Carlos keep the captaincy, and let Chambers get on with his job, which is DEFENDING.

Great news. I have to agree let him settle in before giving him the captaincy, Edwards has done a good job, & a bit of stability would be good.

Can I just say, I met Richard Wright yesterday at my sons 6 a-side tournament in Sudbury, he was an absolute gentleman, he allowed me to take a picture of him with my son who was playing in goal, a pleasure to meet.

Not captain. let him settle in. Seems that captaincy had the same effect on him at Forest as it did McAuley and dare I say it Leadbitter. Let Edwards retain captaincy for now.
Can't believe Gavin Johnson is still only 41, seems like an absolute age ago he played for us.

Top signing. The main priority was to get a defender and i think we have a got a great one here, better than what we have now anyway. I agree not to give him the captaincy straight away. No pressure on him, if he don't have it and hopefully he'll be great without it. Can't wait until the season gets started!

@nffc1865, yes he probably wasn't on his game then but it has been stated that there were family issues with his wife suffering with post natal depression. I used to watch him at Northampton & he was quality!! New club & fresh start, Chambers will do the business. COYB!!

Edwards to remain as captain. Had some of our best results last season when he took the armband.

I agree with Kerryblue dont think Edwards is good enough to hold down a place at right back ,will hopefully see him attacking more this season in his best position on the wing .
Give Tommy the captaincy for the next 5 years ,could be the new Butch
