Jewell Left Bemoaning Familiar Failing
Jewell Left Bemoaning Familiar Failing

Blues boss Paul Jewell was left bemoaning a familiar failing after Town were defeated 2-0 at Luton in a pre-season friendly. Home defender Janos Kovacs nodded a goal from a set piece in either half to see the Blue Square Bet Premier side to victory.

Jewell said: “I thought in the second half we were a lot better than we were in the first, but conceding goals from set pieces like that is what’s undone us. How many times have I said that to you?

“I think the first time they’ve been in our half in the second half, they’ve scored a goal.

“I’m hoping to get people to do better than that. We can’t concede goals like that. I said that last year, it’s been no secret. We’ve been trying to improve that department of the team but we haven’t been able to just yet.”

Despite the loss, Town’s first of pre-season, the Blues manager says there were positives: “We don’t like losing but we’re still training towards three weeks today.

“There were a lot of plus points. You can see the way Massimo can play, we passed the ball really well at times and their goalie’s pulled off three or four saves that he probably won’t pull off again.

“Goals change games. If we had scored in the second half, I felt we would have gone on to win the game.

“You still get something positive out of it, but the negatives are that we conceded the goals in the manner we have done and you’re banging your head against a brick wall sometimes.”

Why are you still persisting in playing the diamond? Don't you remember the first half of last season? I do!
4231 really sorted us out last year, the players looked happy and knew their roles, just needed a keeper and centreback and we have a decent season to look forward to. So why the backwards step? What are you doing? Is it cause a diamond is a kind of jewel?

We have to do the diamond when we don't have available wingers

Re. the diamond, I think part of the problem is the fact we are overloaded with midfielders (Bullard, Drury, Emmanuel-Thomas, Hyam, Luongo, Martin, Stephenson) who all want to play in the centre, aside from Carson who hasn't pushed on as we would have liked.

Although Carson and JET are wingers.

... but PJ, you have been in charge for 18 months are a so called experience manager - why have you not sorted it out?! Time to stop messing around, still need a CB, midfielder (creative/winger) and at least one but preferably two strikers. No confidence in PJ getting them, but hope to be proved very wrong.

Simply can't see how some people on here think PJ has built a good squad - it still looks weak and very average to me.

With a year left on his contract, PJ needs to prove himself, whatever some say, last year was poor - worse than the season before. The table didn't lie.

So who was detailed to pick up Kovacs? Delaney or Chambers?

Keanish, Felaney was beaten in the air, but to be fair it was second phase ball where Wight got caught under the initial cross. I always think the issue is preventing the initial cross and then dealing with second phase play, we do neither of these well.

Delaney I wish Fellaini played for us!

if we are to play the "diamond" we need pace on the flank's which Drury and Stephenson don't have a lot of. if we continue with it it means either JET or Martin get played out of position. agree with other posts about 4-2-3-1 being what the players were happy with towards the end of last year.

Scooterblue, We don't need drury or Kourouma (he played the wider role today) etc to have pace if the full backs are good enough. 1st half Ainsley & Wight weren't good enough or far enough forward. 2nd half Carlos & Cressy made a difference, more options and threat, but if we do play with a diamond I think we need a big striker to feed off their crosses. Biggest positive from this game though was Loungo, think Magilyon in his pomp but with pace!

SouperJim - I don't care that we lost a pre season game, couldn't care less. What I do care about is that we are conceding goals from set pieces yet again. Yes, the defender was strong in the air but jeez, no one got within yards of him each time. I was at the game and he was dominant in the air all day, you would haver thought someone would have paid attention to that! It might be an idea to sign that fella up btw, Luton player of the season last year and highly thought of apparently.

Only the manager can be blamed if we are still conceding the goals from set pieces 18 months in surely?
