Smith Could Face West Ham
Thursday, 2nd Aug 2012 11:06

Blues boss Paul Jewell has confirmed that centre-half Tommy Smith will be in contention for a place in Saturday’s home friendly against West Ham (KO 3pm). The 22-year-old’s New Zealand side exited the Olympics after a 3-0 defeat to Brazil yesterday.

Jewell said: “Tommy should be back with us tomorrow and we'll have a look at him from there.”

Children below 16 years of age can go to the game for free, while there are also offers for season ticket holders if seats are bought in advance. More details here.

I would like to see him next to Chambers as they would be my starting pair

Feel we need another CB as i think Smith will not have the best of seasons as he have not yet had a break from football. If i remember rightly he had a very good World Cup a couple of years back and a poor season which had the fans on his back.

Hope he proves me wrong and he forms a great partnership with Chambers at the back.

Always rated Tommy Smith - he's had to mature through some pretty tough seasons.

Got a feeling this year will be his year!

Karlosfandangal: just to let you know, he has had a break because we was injured for a short period before the Olympics. We spoke to him at the Ricoh and he said he's been training with the boys a little before he had to go to the Olympics and he's dying to get back to it 'to push for my place'. Good guy, lovely lad and one who's set to prove himself this year.

Would like to see Tommy command a place in the team for years to come now and think he will . And to those saying he has not had a break he did miss half the season before he was playing regularly so should be ok

Smith deserves a chance to form a partnership with Chambers. That will need to be given time, but if they gel we could have a pairing there for the next ten years. Play him Saturday, against Bristol Rovers in the cup match, and the league games thereafter. I agree about the need for a settled defence.

Proved himself to be a decent defender 2nd half of last season...still think we should've kept hold of Sonko until sorting out a partner for Chambers tho.

sorry, but Tommy Smith is not ready yet.. the championship will be tight again and we need dependable defenders, not those that fall asleep after 85 minutes.. Would cost a few quid but wouldnt need another defender, would keep or increase value and show ambition, maybe wants to stay in Prem, and goes against my previous post.. Scott Dann from Blackburn.. said we should have took him when at Walsall, but hey..

Good, get him beside Chambers, cant do any worse than Delaney. If Smith isn't going to play this season he's never going to be ready to play, he was really solid second half of the season and he cant just keep sitting on the bench because we will never realise his potential.

@runningout he is more than ready as he showed towards the end of last season playing out of position compared to the so called senior defender and for me would be captain as he talks and organises.
