Davies Believed to Be Subject of Bid
Friday, 17th Aug 2012 22:46

Derby’s Steve Davies is believed to be the subject of the bid manager Paul Jewell revealed he had been lodged on Thursday morning. The Town manager’s confidence that a deal would go through, perhaps in time for Saturday’s game against Blackburn, suggested the target was a player he had been chasing for a while with Davies the most obvious candidate.

The 24-year-old was first linked with Town by the national press in late May but rumours that the 6ft 1in tall Liverpudlian would be joining the Blues in the summer had been circulating amongst Derby supporters since the end of last season.

Shortly after the end of 2011/12 Rams manager Nigel Clough revealed that Davies had been transfer-listed having turned down the offer of a new contract due to "a genuine family reason". Davies has a year remaining on his current deal, the Rams having taken up an option on his previous terms.

Town have been speaking to Derby regarding Davies all summer but the Blues were unwilling to meet the Midlanders’ £1 million price tag. It’s likely a compromise has finally been reached and we understand the club are confident of finally getting their man, albeit not in time for Saturday’s game against Blackburn as Jewell had hoped.

The Town boss signed Davies from Tranmere in 2008 when manager at Pride Park for a fee which could have risen as high as £725,000 had various clauses been triggered.

Injuries - including a fractured skull last October - have limited him to only 55 starts and 39 sub appearances in his four years with the Rams, in which time he has scored 23 goals, 12 of them during 2011/12.

Ooooooooooh... This could be interesting as there would be many questions hanging over the signing. How long until he would be match fit? Could he stay fit and not get injured? How prolific could he be if he stayed fit? Would we play him upfront or on the left wing? And how would that affect the formation and starting lineup of the rest of the team?
If he signs, no matter how his time with us goes, it should certainly be interesting. I'm personally pleased with signing, if it happens!
COYB!!!

Absolutely SUPERB signing if it went through. Good header, got a juicy left foot and can score from any range. PERFECT signing if we get him..Buzzing for tomorrow, this makes me "overbuzz"!!!

Before people start slating his goalscoring record. REMEMBER he also operates alot on the wing, kinda like Murphy, only better (sorry Garv)...

Not really bothered about this to be honest, drawn out far too long. Would rather see a new centre back at the moment, more of a priority, but hey what do I know, just game of opinions.coyb

How about we also sign Yannick Bolasie from Bristol City for the left wing? He's also young, over 6ft and a few premiership clubs were thought to be interested in him. Just a thought.

He would be an excellent signing and I hope we get him. We played well on Tuesday but lacked some height up front.
Another centre back for cover and we will have a decent team which should be challenging for a top 6.

Pleased if this is true but was hoping it was Kelvin Wilson just to strengthen the defence a bit more, I don't want us letting in as many as last season; thats for sure.

I will be happy with this one, it would be good to see him operate on the left allowing Martin to operate in his far more effective second striker role.

HOPEFULLY the deal will finally get done, as he is a player we very much need who could do straight into the team (once his fitness is there). We do need more aerial presence in attack.

If this guy can stay fit, he will be quality. Looking forward to tomorrow as it is a big game. We need to be competing against the likes of Blackburn if we are to challenge for a top 6 finish, so tomorrow will be interesting.

COYB!

Will be a tad disappointed if we've caved in on this one if it is Davies, could we expect the unexpected?

If the clubs can't agree the fee, why can't something be done with a low initial fee and add-ons? £200,000 up-front, £200,000 after ten appearances, etc. Be creative!

'Glad to see the comments above about him being a left-sided option; I like the 4-2-3-1 and don't see him displacing Chopra.

his injury record is a concern and so is his lack of goal scoring but most importantly he wouldn't be in my first eleven. we are going to spend more on his transfer than all our other signings combined and I can't see why. will be happy to eat humble pie at end of the season.

The only thing that worries me if we play him on the left side of a 4-2-3-1 is that he'll be the winger on the edge of the box rather than the target man inside the box that we need.

Loach
Edwards Chambers Smith Cresswell
Luongo Hyam
E-Thomas Martin Davies
Chopra

With this we have two strikrers in our best formation this team plays in, and can easily be changed to two up front if we are chasing a game or any other tactical reason!!

Dissboyitfc added 10:15 - Aug 18
hope its not kitson, think it could well be ....

Bluey123 its clear you seek attention with your pathetic repetitive comments, why dont you go away and then come back when you have something interesting to say, if you can do this you might well grab the attention you desperately seek....

whatever people think of evans jewell and clegg, the fact is we wont be doing a portsmouth, really feel for their supporters at the moment.

1-1 this afternoon.....really looking forward to it.... coyb

hhmmm wouldn't be over whelmed if we did sign him, very injury prone and can't really see him improving the team that much.
