Chopra Could Be Back at Brighton
Monday, 1st Oct 2012 10:30

Striker Michael Chopra could be back in the Town side when the Blues take on Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Tuesday. Midfielder Luke Hyam remains a doubt with a back problem.

Assistant manager Chris Hutchings, who took this morning’s press conference with manager Paul Jewell having stayed at his home in Yorkshire after the Barnsley game but now back at the club, says Chopra is making good progress having missed the last two games with a thigh strain: “He’ll be training today and if he comes through today, and we’re positive that he should, there’s no reason why he can’t be included, which is a big plus.

“Luke Hyam has tweaked his back, so he’s a bit stiff. We’ll assess him and see what he’s like tomorrow. He's still got another day or so to get over it.

“We’re not quite sure [whether he will] at this moment in time. He’s a quick healer, he’s a very determined lad and he won’t want to miss a game if he possibly can make it.”

Hutchings confirmed that Guirane N’Daw was withdrawn on Saturday after manager Paul Jewell was spoken to by referee Trevor Kettle at half-time: “He got booked and he was a little bit hot-headed and we just thought we were under the cosh and couldn’t afford to go down to 10 men, so that was the decision we made and you have to make these decisions sometimes.”

I'll be first to rip PJ here.

A job saving match tomorrow night and he elects to stay at home rather than get his team motivated. Bizarre.

You set them up Phil and we'll smash them home!!

Hopefully we wont take a risk with chops and rule him out with a long term injury. Pj should be at the club not at home.

In my humble opinion its the experienced and senior players that have gotten us into this mess in the first place. I'll be playing Carson, and if fit, Hyam as well. I'll put Merriot on the bench along with Lawenson and Joe Whight.

If Choppa and co don't play well then sub them at half-time for the kids. Tell the kids if they play well then they will start the next five games and its down to them to stay in the first team.

Last roll of the dice PJ - if you get the sack then at least be daring rather than playing it safe

@MattinLondon. Agree totally with you. Look mat Rodgers with Liverpool. Giving youth its chance & playing proper footie. Wont win the league but fans have hope for the future & entertaning footie.Meant look at Rodgers.

MattinLondon, alternatively PJ could just write his own resignation letter and be done with it if he was to follow your advice

Whilst I'm in the mood for a good moan - and I'm not being negative.

Edwards tries his best at right-back but he is not a defender and maybe I'm going against the grain here but I don't think that Cresswell is a good defender - good at going forward but as a defender he isn't good enough. I think Tommy Smith looks a bit awful at times simply because Cresswell doesn't help out.

The Brighton defenders will now have a sleepless night
and be quaking in their boots at this news tomorrow night

Maybe we can sign Tarrico on a one match loan and play him in defence
as we need some players with his bite there.

@jimmyjazz
All I'm saying its that its the senior players who have got us into this mess by playing poorly. Do I see the same players becoming match winners overnight? No I don't. We need players who will have that bite to want to play and stay in the first team, play without fear and say to the opposing players 'I'm a Town player, we're better than you and I'm going to make you look awful'.

And thats where the arrogance of youth comes into it.

@Matt
Were we talking about Luke Hyam i'd be 100% in agreement. I just don't think this is the time to be blooding youngsters who have no experience at all, even though I expect us to lose each of our next 3 games.
Cresswell, Villa, £4m - sounds like a great deal for us all of a sudden

Jason Scotland is a better away game player in my opinion, he holds the ball up a lot better and brings the others into play. Totally agree with MattinLondon too about the defending! Anyone know why Carson wasn't even in the squad saturday by the way?

Give Paul Jewell a break please! It clearly says that he was back at the club this morning. Surely he is entitled to spend one night and day with his family?

hancockingoal - u seem to miss the point, if there was a story on here saying PJ was wearing blue socks some people would post saying they should be grey.

I was under the impression Cresswell got a goal on saturday and defensively we did pretty well - Hyam and N'daw having to be substituted probably had quite a lot to do with us not holding out for a win.
I do think there are some real plonkers on this site. All the cliches come out - I do sometimes wonder whether some of the posters on this site actually watch Town at all.
Top of the cliches: Carlos is no defender.(In my opinion he was our best defender last season - his pace making up for the odd positional error).
Also, suddenly Cresswell is useless. Last season everyone thought he was the best thing since sliced bread and now the bandwagon is saying he is no good. he is a young 100% player who played pretty well for most of last season (not every game) and so far this season he hasn't played quite as well as we know he can. All I can say is "class is permanent, form temporary".
Regarding the younger fringe players mentioned by Mattinlondon - I haven't seen most of them play but my gut feeling is they are nowhere near ready for the first team with the exception of Carson who himself has not exactly set the team alight when he has started this season.
Whatever we think about PJ, he and his staff know a hell of a lot more about football, the championship, training etc then I ,or I suspect 99% of the supporters.
Thats my rant over and I will be at Brighton tomorrow hoping that we can get something out of the game and if we don't, that at least we play well.

RRanger. i agree with the dismisal of people crashing into Cresswell. He is a quality young player that is still learning AND doing so in what I consider to be a poorly managed team.

That said, Edwards is definitely not a defender. His positional sense is pretty dismal and if you watch the goals against back from last season (and a few from this) you can directly link them to him not being where you might expect him to be (being pulled out of position or just lacking in concentration). I love his endevour but I truly don't think he is suited to having a primary responsibility of defending.

As far as Jewell staying at home a night. Even as someone that didn't support his appointment (unsuited from the start for several reasons), and am looking forward to him going (an utterly un-ITFC stance, but I feel to move forward we must have a new manager) the attack on him not coming back to Ipswich immediately is ridiculous. Anyone jumping on that bandwagon really needs to start thinking for themselves a bit more...

Re: 'PJ staying at home after the Barnsley game, but now back at the club' isn't this now a massive problem for English football?

OK, RK bought a home in Suffolk, but he's very wealthy. What's it like particularly for players, those who are never going to make it to the very top, who are on short term contracts or on loan, who've got kids settled in schools, a mortgage, partner with a job, etc. It must be very difficult to commit heart and soul to a club when there's good chance, however well you play, that you'll be moved on in a few months.

TWTD (the Ramsey era, the Robson era) when players had loyalty to and pride in Ipswich Town Football Club. If the manager is in the same situation as the players what hope is there?

I believe the "now is back at the club" did not appear in the original script and has been added. I now retract my statement as this has been amended.
