Leicester's Wellens Signs On Loan
Thursday, 4th Oct 2012 17:37

Leicester midfielder Richie Wellens has joined the Blues on a month's loan, the Blues have confirmed. The 32-year-old has been out of favour with the Foxes this season and is likely to go straight into the squad for Saturday's home live Sky game against Cardiff City.

Wellens told the club site that he was immediately attracted to the prospect of moving to Portman Road when the chance came: "I've been looking to go out on loan and when the opportunity arose to come to Ipswich, I didn't have to think twice.

"Leicester wanted me to go out on loan and when they showed me the list of clubs that I could go to, Ipswich stood out.

"I need to start playing games again after my injury and this is a great opportunity to do that. It's a nice club and I've always enjoyed playing at Portman Road.

"We're down at the bottom of the league at the minute but there are some good players here in the squad so I'm sure the position will soon change."

Central midfielder Wellens started his career with hometown club Manchester United making one League Cup sub appearance before moving on to Blackpool where he played between 2000 and 2005, making 193 starts and 23 sub appearances for the Seasiders.

The 5ft 9in midfielder split the next four years between Oldham and Doncaster before joining Leicester for £1 million in July 2009.

He has made 139 starts and six substitute appearances for the Foxes but has not featured this season. After missing the end of last season and pre-season ahead of 2012/13 with a knee injury, Wellens, who is with Town until November 10th, came close to joining Sheffield United on loan.

Earlier this afternoon, Southend's Bilel Mohsni revealed that he is set to sign a three-month loan with the Blues tomorrow, while Town are believed to have renewed their interest in QPR striker DJ Campbell.

Elsewhere, free agent Nigel Reo-Coker is said to be interesting the Blues but with Wellens having signed the 28-year-old - who was understood to have spoken to Town in the summer of 2011 - would appear an unlikely addition.

I think the people complaining about this signing probably haven't seen that much of Richie Wellens and don't appreciate the positive impact he had when he arrived at Leicester. He's not a marquee signing but he is a good solid player and I welcome his arrival.

Everyone's too quick to start with the "he's old, not one for the future, Jewell was lying about building with youth" etc. Our youngsters will still get their chances but we need some experience to stabilise what is currently a very shaky squad.

@RetroBlue I am not sure if there is a limit, See Portsmouth- I know they are under exceptional circumstances, but those aside no team should be given any different rules to operate under in my opinion, seems as Portsmouth's issues were caused at the club by the running of the club- I may be very wrong,

As for people commenting about age, Venus and Mowbray weren't exactly spring chickens when they achieved their greatest form.

@RetroBlue / @wkj - I know it used to be a maximum of five in the matchday selection, because I seem to recall Jim Magilton flirting with the limit back in the days when we had Mark Noble, Simon Walton etc. No idea if it's the same now though.

Building for the future eh pj? Or quick fix to save my job? Just saying IMO. Don't agree with all these loan signings, had 3 months to sort his squad out in the summer! No disrespect to the loanees but they couldn't give a monkeys after their month stint is over.come on sort it out!

Proper random signing, the one position we have enough cover for is in the middle of the park with N'Daw, Luongo, Hyam and Drury. I really don't see the logic in this one, a sign of a manager under pressure.

We're in the bottom three, of course we want a long term strategy but I just want us out of that bottom three especially when Peterborough look like they're picking up,we have to understand our predicument, a good ball player who will get us ticking in there , welcome Ritchie.

Wellens is quality ... but surely he play's the same position as N'Daw?

I seem to remember Norwich going down after being overly reliant on loan players. Do these guys really care about a club scrapping for its life?

From the Leicester web site: "The temporary switch to Portman Road will give the Foxes playmaker an opportunity to build match fitness, after completing his rehabilitation period following knee surgery in the summer." So he's not match fit then?

You'll see Wellens is much more of a ball player thanN'Daw they're both deep lying players but N'Daw and Wellens would complement each other quite well, a tackler and a passer. This will also give Martin the chance to roam a bit more and support Chops or whoever plays up front because he knows he has two quite physical lads behind him. Wellens has a decent long rage shot and set piece as well if I remember correctly.

Very happy with this and the potential other signings in a CB and hopefully a striker, he will bring some much needed steel to the middle and a creative player, up to now we only have 1 decent CM (N'Daw) and 1 not yet complete player in Luongo, our own bred CM in Drury and Hyam are not good enough and i have said that from day 1 of seeing both play, Hyam maybe good but too small to do the job he is supposed to be (enforcer) and not good enough to be creative.
Finally some competition in the CB role, as Smith will hopefully become 4th choice, also gives cover for LB if Cressy is injured / having a bad day.
We do have to play our own youngsters but i am afraid we do not have any of note, nothing and nobody that i could say is a real gem, they are all "just enough" and that for me a true blue is not good enough, if we have to bring in players and get a good balance between youth and experience as we finally seem to be then that is great, even if they are not "home gown".
COYB ..I will be there for Cardiff giving them my all.....

Some of our junior fans need to learn the odd bad game or short term loss of form doesn't make a bad player. I notice references to Drury amongst others not cutting it. At his best he has been excellent for us. So if you are genuine town fan don't right off good players after a couple of bad games.

I am really quite appalled by it all.PK said this summer that the emphasis was on youth and building for the future and no more loan signings. Now because we are in deep waters, he is bringing in past-their-best ageing players who can't get into their teams. Panic buying as usual and loan players at that. There is no direction and we have lost the plot completely. How on earth can we be building a future when we pick up other teams' scraps. I think we have to put an end to this loan fiasco as you simply can't build a future. What's wring with our young players ? Not so long ago we had a youth academy that was our pride and joy and the envy of other clubs. Let's face it that we are in terminal decline.

32 year old ? Midfielder ? On Loan ? - and we can't even speak to Lee Martin about a contract, or indeed play him in his best position.

Why do we need so many Midfielders ? - or have I missed something ??

This is yet another example of Jewell 'thrashing around in the dark' - not knowing where his ar#e hangs - unfortunately.
If moving this Club forward is important - he has to go.

Like most I think pj isn't the man to take us forward, but I can see what he is doing getting in these two, potentially three signings. Firstly, Moshni is young and having watched him play he is obviously talented. Yes he has a temper and maybe he may prove a liability, but he is versatile, scores, gets stuck in and adds vital height and options to the starting line up. Worth a punt. Wellens may be 32 but he's Leicester's captain and is a solid ball player, and like higgingbotham he will lead from the middle. That's two voices to help the younger and less experiences players through games. He is a gd footballer and is needed. We know hyam is quality and is the future of this club but he is injured. Loungo is also a talent but young and finding it difficult at times, and although drury is usually sound he is going through a dip in form. N'daw and Welles will tighten us up and make us harder to break down. With regards to Campbell, I would welcome him. Yes, he's been a bit hit and miss but he is quick and is a poacher. Gd foil for Scotland for sure. Like most I don't like loan players but if we don't tighten up we will end up in a serious relegation battle. To those who say maybe it would be gd to go down and do a scum or Southampton I say this - don't forget Leeds, forest and Sheffield weds who took years to come back. It would a total disaster to go down and financial suicide. I also want someone to take the club I love forward, but until that happens lets get out of the current predicament. We do have a nucleus of younger players to go forward. Loach, Hewitt, cress well, chambers, hyam, Carson, jet -maybe if he gets the chip off his shoulder and realises the undoubted talent he has. That's without the unknown quantity that is Murray and Marriott to name a few. Got to stick with the club we love - COYB!

...... to say nothing about his reluctance to play our 'ace young midfielder' Hyam.

Must admit this whole loan thing is a tad disheartening after the experiences of last season.

Why the hell do we need Reo Coker!! Gods sake what is pj's obsession with central midfielders, central Defenders yes! Centre midfielders no!

I get going for DJ Campbell/Moshni as were short in that area, but this lad and Reo Coker????
