Town Interview Shearer
Thursday, 25th Oct 2012 19:28

TWTD understands that former England skipper Alan Shearer has been interviewed for the position of Town manager. The ex-striker’s only previous managerial experience was eight games as boss at Newcastle United at the end of the 2008/09 season.

The Magpies legend, who like Town owner Marcus Evans has been in Barbados this week, couldn’t prevent his already-relegation-haunted club from dropping into the Championship, managing only one win and two draws during his time in charge. He left that summer and was replaced by Chris Hughton.

Since that spell Shearer, 42, has been linked with various jobs, including the currently vacant position at Blackburn Rovers, while working as a pundit on Match of the Day

Capped 63 times by England, scoring 30 goals, Shearer was reported to have been a potential Town target when Roy Keane left the club 21 months ago.

Earlier today, Blues striker Michael Chopra, a one-time team-mate of Shearer’s at Newcastle, said he’d very much like to see him at Portman Road: “I would love to see Alan Shearer as manager. Such a good person and worked and played under some great managers, including Sir Bobby Robson.”

However, despite Shearer's undoubted profile and experience of playing the game at the highest level, comments made by chief executive Simon Clegg at last night’s Supporters Club AGM hinted that a man more experienced in management would be the club’s preferred choice: “This is not going to be a high-risk appointment.

“We need to have someone that we’ve got confidence in, who has got the necessary experience and skill-base to get us out of this current hole and get us to where we want to go in the long run.”

The Blues are likely to interview a significant number of candidates with Simon Clegg having indicated a great deal of interest in the job vacated by Paul Jewell on Wednesday.

if his words here are anything to go by, and he learnt as much from SBR as it looks like he did, then why wouldnt you want him to have a stab at it...... as someone rightly pointed out, the last inexperienced geodie we put in charge wasnt too shabby.......

rosseden - I think we're in too much of a predicament for someone to 'have a stab at it'

OMG this is frightening. Why are we interviewing a man with just 8 games managerial experience? Is it so that when Gary Megson is interviewed he would look good!

My god Jewell has only been gone a couple of days, Shearer is one of many possibles and he is already being slagged off. Instead of making a mindless comment just condemning him, how about some constructive suggestions about the replacement!

i know what you mean warkonwater..... he wouldnt have been in my top threee options i have to say..... as a slightly leftfield shout though it could work out..... it could also blow up in our faces...... but, in reality if Coyle (good football) isnt going to come here, Mccarthy (hoofball) isnt, then we either have someone who has been out of the game with no experience ie Shearer, loads of experience Curbishley, or someone from the lower leagues.....

I like the idea of tisdale or maybe robinson, but to be fair to them both coming from small clubs with little / no expectation, to ITFC with fickle fans and pressure, that could go either way too........ I have also seen games with both these teams in the last 6 months, and neither got the ball down and played to feet that much, which, could be due to the level they play at, but might also be down to them......

I guess whichever way you look at it, theres a big risk, its just which side of the fence you sit on as to which risk you'd prefer...... I just hope we dont ruin Burleys legacy from yesteryear by bringing him back, he will never do as much now as he did then, and being sacked a second time wouldnt be fair on him....... oh, and phil brown / graham westley...... no thankyou.....

No matter how talented a player he is, I would want to see Shearer managing at a lot-lower league club before considering him at championship level. It was last chance saloon at Newcastle when they appointed him and we're nowhere near that stage yet, thank goodness. Steve Coppell could be a shout but Palace will get him before we do.

Thanks but afraid to say no thanks. Need someone who has a plan a,b and c for what is going to be a very difficult season from here on in.
If Megson gets the nod I will not be attending again, cant stand him or the way he sets his teams up.
Mick McCarthy again not for me.
Town are a club steeped in tradition and should be able to attract the man we want rather than a panic appointment.
The right man who can in turn get it right at PR is gonna have a fantastic job.

rosseden - you're right - anyone at this point has an element of risk about them - i must say, for me curbishly tends to fit the bill out of the majority of early front runners (with the exception of Redknapp - but never going to happen). Shearer for me has the feel of Keane again - although without the experience of taking a team up to the premiership!

Oh god what a bloody mess!

I think the problem is that he don't have too much managerial experience.

youre right it is a mess, but just imagine, they stick a shearer / curbishley / anyone in, we win 6 on the bounce and are pushing top six.... life will be very different...... its just a waiting game!

I remember him saying in 1994ish and i'm paraphrasing a bit - "there's no such thing as an easy game in football, except ipswich at home...." most of you won't remember and ME and Clegg certainly won't....

Shearer has no chance it is a shoo in for another Alan and probably has been for some time.

As far as Curbishley being favourite... I'm struggling to see any difference between him and Jewell! Both had success at getting small teams promoted from the championship and keeping them there. Curbs has been out of the the loop for years just like Jewell was.

And what evidence does anyone have for assuming he would bring Holland in as his number two?!? Pipe dream people.

Was it Shearer who said: "Theres no easy games in the Premiership, except Ipswich at home?"

We have one crack at this, we need to make sure we don't employ another waste of space that will see us in the same position in 18 months time...

BuckieBlue added 22:31 - Oct 25
Clegg's comment does suggest it won't be Shearer; maybe current squad need an experienced hand to get us back on track.

be a bit suprised and slightly underwhelmed if this did happen, although with SC and ME appointing anything could happen,if their so called advisors have recommended Shearer then I would suggest that they need some new advisors

MooseJuice, BigFatJoe87 - What's wrong with you...?! Curbs has always taken teams up from the depths and left then thriving in the Prem. He's never failed, never been sacked. PJ flopped at Sheff Wed, flopped at Derby - the appointment directly before ITFC so he had a decidedly patchy record. Curbs was unable to take a job for a long period after West Ham betrayed him as he was going through an unfair dismissal case, which he won. PROVEN TRACK RECORD. ME/Cleggy for once, get it right and snap him up before Palace do!
