Town Interview Shearer
Thursday, 25th Oct 2012 19:28

TWTD understands that former England skipper Alan Shearer has been interviewed for the position of Town manager. The ex-striker’s only previous managerial experience was eight games as boss at Newcastle United at the end of the 2008/09 season.

The Magpies legend, who like Town owner Marcus Evans has been in Barbados this week, couldn’t prevent his already-relegation-haunted club from dropping into the Championship, managing only one win and two draws during his time in charge. He left that summer and was replaced by Chris Hughton.

Since that spell Shearer, 42, has been linked with various jobs, including the currently vacant position at Blackburn Rovers, while working as a pundit on Match of the Day

Capped 63 times by England, scoring 30 goals, Shearer was reported to have been a potential Town target when Roy Keane left the club 21 months ago.

Earlier today, Blues striker Michael Chopra, a one-time team-mate of Shearer’s at Newcastle, said he’d very much like to see him at Portman Road: “I would love to see Alan Shearer as manager. Such a good person and worked and played under some great managers, including Sir Bobby Robson.”

However, despite Shearer's undoubted profile and experience of playing the game at the highest level, comments made by chief executive Simon Clegg at last night’s Supporters Club AGM hinted that a man more experienced in management would be the club’s preferred choice: “This is not going to be a high-risk appointment.

“We need to have someone that we’ve got confidence in, who has got the necessary experience and skill-base to get us out of this current hole and get us to where we want to go in the long run.”

The Blues are likely to interview a significant number of candidates with Simon Clegg having indicated a great deal of interest in the job vacated by Paul Jewell on Wednesday.

Okay I thought about this overnight and I'm undecided still. Not my favourite option but it interests me.

Positives;
-big name, could attract players and media attention good for business if goes well.
-probably has an understanding of the club through sir bobby, maybe wanting to emulate his legendary status by replicating his path?
-undoubtably highly competitive and has a winners attitude, people speak of ambition on here a lot and I'm sure he has plenty of it.
-fresh attacking approach.
-he hates Roy Keane too

Negatives;
- the same reasons we went for Keane are why he would appeal and we know how that worked out. No reason to believe it would go the same way as Keano had no people skills but he is less experienced.
- I really felt he bottled the chance to take over Newcastle when they were in trouble as he was worried about his legendary status. This either shows great foresight or selfishness and if its the later I don't want him using my club as a development project.
- I can't stand his analysis on Motd but.. He would not have been so successful in the game if he didn't know it inside out.

Like I have previously said I will support whoever gets the job and once the appointment is made we should end the discussion and get behind the club. At the moment in neutral as far as Shearer is concerned and interested to see how it develops.

These should be the only serious candidates worth considering:

1.Davies
2.Burley
3. McCarthy

Would love to see Tim Sherwood coming in, with Holland as an assistant. Young dynamic couple, Sherwood has a great growing reputation amongst spurs-supporters and within the "expert-family" and have all the possibilities of making a great manager, learning his trade at spurs. Holland is a true blue.

Not sure Shearer is the answer. The last time we took a player with no experience and said now be a manager it ended in tears with Super Jim.

We need an experienced manager that players will want to play for ( look at the quality of payers that have said no to a permanent signing) and he should be told you have a guaranteed four years and you will also be rewarded for the youth you bring through. Otherwise it will be short term Boyer type signings - fading Premiership stars on loan looking to get fit or a last pay day.

Short term contract leads to short term actions and the management and all fans have to understand this.

Could possibly reverse the trend of not being able attract the players we want, but this would mean a U turn for Clegg who announced 'this will not be a high risk appointment'.

I get the feeling it doesnt matter who we want, its ME who decides who he wants or is pals with and sod the rest. I find it very odd that ultimately we are a business to him and that as a 'business' he is losing money because we dont attract any big name players we are sitting at the foot of the table in turmoil, yet he doesnt seem to make any 'business' decisions that make sense. I just hope im wrong because the next appointment is the biggest in our history to turn it around. Coyle for me

The idea that he has been interviewed seriously for the job i find shocking. Shearer is not a manager, and not the sharpest tool in the box either allegedly. ME would not gamble his investment by placing it in the hands of a non-manager, surely?
McCarthy or Burley please.

Just like to point out Jim Magilton got us to 8th the highest we have finished since promotion to premiership so can't say how it didn't work...
Loved the club, passion, played football.firmily believe he was unlucky just wasn't the big name to promote the itfc brand for Evans.

This would be a truly terrible decision. At least Roy Keane had some (relatively successful) management experience. On what basis would Shearer be given the job? He may do an amazing job but it isn't the sort of risk we should be taking. It has to be someone with some managerial success. Jenkinson maybe...

Also, don't we hate Alan Shearer for being very disrespectful about us.

2+2=5 here I think.

Doesnt have the necessary managerial experience to get us out of the hole we are. How many games was he manager for Newcastle, 8?? And they say dowie would be his number 2, no thanks.

I am sure things will be a little clearer come Monday. Curbs kept west ham up in premier winning 7 from 9 to stay up then up to 7th in premier. Impressive record at Charlton with huge similarities to us. Been out of game but 2 Years was enforced for legal reasons. Mervyn day would sort out our keeper and defence problems. Herman or matty h in back room

Can't say I'm overly enthused by the prospect of the dullest of all pundits, who has scant managerial experience taking over. I wouldn't be in favour of Andy Townsend being in the running either, even if he were to bring his Tactics Truck.

Just what we need, rich top player wanting a crack at management. Hardly any prior experience. Would make the Roy Keane years look like heaven.

Shearer's not even a good pundit. Will he attempt to cheer up strikers after they've missed a few chances with "I bet you're disappointed with that"

I've been mulling this over in my head all night.... it screams disaster. But... would he bring Ian Dowie along as assistant? That guy is hilarious :P

Needs to be Mick McCarthy. Cant think of any downsides at all to him. All Others there are negatives. Get him in!

They (ME and SC) just can't resist the media connection. As is a great bloke but better on MotD than on match day at PR
