Town Interview Shearer
Thursday, 25th Oct 2012 19:28

TWTD understands that former England skipper Alan Shearer has been interviewed for the position of Town manager. The ex-striker’s only previous managerial experience was eight games as boss at Newcastle United at the end of the 2008/09 season.

The Magpies legend, who like Town owner Marcus Evans has been in Barbados this week, couldn’t prevent his already-relegation-haunted club from dropping into the Championship, managing only one win and two draws during his time in charge. He left that summer and was replaced by Chris Hughton.

Since that spell Shearer, 42, has been linked with various jobs, including the currently vacant position at Blackburn Rovers, while working as a pundit on Match of the Day

Capped 63 times by England, scoring 30 goals, Shearer was reported to have been a potential Town target when Roy Keane left the club 21 months ago.

Earlier today, Blues striker Michael Chopra, a one-time team-mate of Shearer’s at Newcastle, said he’d very much like to see him at Portman Road: “I would love to see Alan Shearer as manager. Such a good person and worked and played under some great managers, including Sir Bobby Robson.”

However, despite Shearer's undoubted profile and experience of playing the game at the highest level, comments made by chief executive Simon Clegg at last night’s Supporters Club AGM hinted that a man more experienced in management would be the club’s preferred choice: “This is not going to be a high-risk appointment.

“We need to have someone that we’ve got confidence in, who has got the necessary experience and skill-base to get us out of this current hole and get us to where we want to go in the long run.”

The Blues are likely to interview a significant number of candidates with Simon Clegg having indicated a great deal of interest in the job vacated by Paul Jewell on Wednesday.

If we wernt bottom of the league and well and truly in the sh*t, I would be tempted to support this.

But we need an experienced manager in my opinion, we need to get this one right as if we dont its league 1 !!

Hope the club dont rush into an appointment, lets take our time, see who applies and actually interview more than one person.

For me I still like Curbishley although he has been out of the game a while, he's proven at the club the size of Ipswich.

But whoever comes in needs a 5 year contract as its going to take time. A long time, a lot of pre madonnas need to leave this club and good, young, hungry ones brought in.

Wouldn't be my choice but would give him support if chosen.

More worryingly for me is that I've been checking the latest odds and Gary Megson is now third fav behind Curbs and McCarthy so when you put that in the mix Shearer wouldn't be all that bad!!! Hahaha!

Absolutely no way! We need a credible manager with the know-how to get the best out of our under-performing squad. For me Mick McCarthy would be ideal in this respect. After that I'd take any of the following;
George Burley
Owen Coyle
Karl Robinson

For the love of god no!

What managerial experience does he have other than sealing Newcastle's Championship status a few years ago? Even his punditry is dire.

A bit concerned by this, out of all the possible candidates to go with Shearer would be a bit cautious, who knows though? one hell of a player and it isn't like Keane. Keane and Shearer hate each other and I would imagine Shearer is considerably more approachable. One good thing is that Chops would be happy with this and Shearer being an ex striker and a favourite of Chops could be the man to get him firing. Hopefully more people will be interviewed because there are quite a few managers out there who could potentially be very good for us. Saying that we have to be respectful because writing anyone off before they have taken charge is ridiculous. No one wanted Pardew at Newcastle and that seems to have turned out smoothly so lets see what happens.

Agree Talbs - Curbs was actually my choice when Keane was sacked and apparantly was interviewed and turned the job down due to the lack of budget (not sure how true this is).
I wouldn't be disappointed if we appointed him, he's managed like wise clubs and got them playing attractive football although it took time with Charlton, I think too many people are drawing parallels with Jewell but the difference is that he has not failed in his last 2 jobs - every manager is different.

NOOOO! what has Shearer ever achieved as a manager! What a ridiculous appointment this would be. Curbishley would have been great 5 years ago, McCarthy has no concept of "playing football" unless it involves the long ball, Megson.... don't get me started!! My first choice would be Redknapp, (never likely to happen though) Second choice would be Owen Coyle, third choice Karl Robinson.

It's only been a day and fans are now arguing over the next manager for gods sake!!!
We are not Real Madrid, it's obvious we have to start again from scratch so if it is shearer so what!!! The new manager will get my full support whoever it is!
Shearer has shed loads of passion and most of the players would look up to him. He would certainly sort out the goal scoring front too!
It may or may not be him but we need to get behind whoever it is!
Curbs is not my choice to be honest but he would get my full support if he became manager, so would burley, shearer, McCarthy etc etc
COYB!!!!!!!

TV pundit again did we not learn from the last two. Great player but not a manager so why interview him in the first place.Clowns up stairs is also a big problem we have in this circus club of ours,PJ gone and the joke continues....

Don't worry, this is just journalistic speculation by someone with a Byker Grove fixation. It;s all based on the fact that two of our previous managers have been PJ & Duncan!!

The least that the new manager has to do is sort out the defence. If we concede two goals a game then we are going straight down to League One. I do not believe that Alan Shearer can do that.
