Town Interview Shearer
Thursday, 25th Oct 2012 19:28

TWTD understands that former England skipper Alan Shearer has been interviewed for the position of Town manager. The ex-striker’s only previous managerial experience was eight games as boss at Newcastle United at the end of the 2008/09 season.

The Magpies legend, who like Town owner Marcus Evans has been in Barbados this week, couldn’t prevent his already-relegation-haunted club from dropping into the Championship, managing only one win and two draws during his time in charge. He left that summer and was replaced by Chris Hughton.

Since that spell Shearer, 42, has been linked with various jobs, including the currently vacant position at Blackburn Rovers, while working as a pundit on Match of the Day

Capped 63 times by England, scoring 30 goals, Shearer was reported to have been a potential Town target when Roy Keane left the club 21 months ago.

Earlier today, Blues striker Michael Chopra, a one-time team-mate of Shearer’s at Newcastle, said he’d very much like to see him at Portman Road: “I would love to see Alan Shearer as manager. Such a good person and worked and played under some great managers, including Sir Bobby Robson.”

However, despite Shearer's undoubted profile and experience of playing the game at the highest level, comments made by chief executive Simon Clegg at last night’s Supporters Club AGM hinted that a man more experienced in management would be the club’s preferred choice: “This is not going to be a high-risk appointment.

“We need to have someone that we’ve got confidence in, who has got the necessary experience and skill-base to get us out of this current hole and get us to where we want to go in the long run.”

The Blues are likely to interview a significant number of candidates with Simon Clegg having indicated a great deal of interest in the job vacated by Paul Jewell on Wednesday.

Lets hope this is just speculation and not another of Evans publicity stunts of getting a big name in to get more coverage in the media.

The club is trying out for an experienced manager who can rebuild the shambles of the last 5 years.

Had you ever heard of The Marcus Evans Group before 'they' took over? Me neither.
'Keano', PJ, and now interviewing an ex (great) player with extremely limited managerial experience.
But, they've all been on telly. All been in the tabloids. All household names.
Publicity.

PS I'd really like Hoddle which I'm sure is total fantasy but I just saw his name and it made me think. Think this: he would be amazing for Ipswich. But since it won't happen lets have.......

Given our last two managers, if Shearer did get getting appointed it would be the final insult.

His only managerial 'experience' was to fail dismally at Newcastle.

We truly are a complete laughing stock.

To paraphrase Matt Johnson: "We sold our soul to pay for our dinner, our stomachs grew fat but our hearts grew thinner..."

Epically sad days for our once wonderful club.

Can't imagine Shearer would get the job. We need someone with more than 8 games as a manager!
I suppose if I had to state my preference it would have to be Karl Robinson. But I'd be happy with plenty of others.
This is going to he an interesting few days!

It won't happen. We need someone who can hit the ground running, even Clegg and ME know this, so we will get someone who has at least managed for a few seasons before.

No thanks, we need to avoid the big name signing, rather go for someone with experience

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

The fact that this is even at interview stage tells me exactly what we all know. Clegg and Evans have not got a clue about football and i have no faith in them to get us out of this mess!

Shearer has zero experience! This would be an unmitigated disaster!

At the AGM last night Clegg said that he replied to every letter applying for the job, even the spurious ones from people who have done well on Championship Manager.

This news would appear to suggest he's actually started interviewing them.

From the EADT website:
"Despite only being out of the game for two weeks, Coyle is itching for a return.
He said: “What I do know is that at whichever club the opportunity arises for me, they're going to be very fortunate, because I'm the best manager I've ever been."" Keep digging Owen
