Jewell Delighted for McCarthy
Sunday, 9th Dec 2012 19:35

Former Blues boss Paul Jewell says he’s delighted that his successor Mick McCarthy has got Town moving in the right direction. The Liverpudlian, who left Portman Road by mutual consent in late October, was sounded out about his potential replacements by owner Marcus Evans.

Speaking to Sky Sports Jewell said: “I’m delighted Mick’s got them going. I had a bit of a hand in getting Mick the job. Marcus was asking me my opinions of certain managers.

“I think Mick is the right man for the job. I’ve really got a great feeling for the club, lovely people work that there, great supporters, great facilities, they just need a good run now.”

Jewell, who says he has no immediate plans to look for another management job, met with Evans last week to look back at why his 21 months in charge didn’t go to plan: “I had dinner with the owner Marcus Evans last week in London and we tried to go back and look at where we think we got things wrong.

“I think possibly in the summer we should have strengthened. We tried to strengthen, but we couldn’t strengthen for different reasons, hence we had so many loan players.

“But I felt [moving on] was the right thing to do for the club,” he added. “It’s a brilliant club.”

Meanwhile, a Town U17 side lost 2-1 at Spurs on Saturday morning in a friendly. Scottish first-year scholar Taylor Hendry netted for the Blues.

This was the trouble Jewell was to nice for his own good.
The players new he was a easy touch and did not respect him and he wanted to do well for Ipswich but at the time the players did not have the same ambitions.
I think he could be a good manager but he need to manage his next team like Mick McCarthy has done for us and dont get to freindly with the players and make them work hard and earn the big wages that they are on and make sure the are fit and show them who is the boss if not then show them the door.
Mick is more a less playing with the same bunch of lads that you left behind Paul and each day he and Terry are on the training field working them hard and they know where they stand with Mick they either do as they are told and get fit and want to play for Town and get results or they will be on their bikes in January and he will bring players in who will becuse their is only one Manager at Ipswich and its not the players.
Being a nice caring guy and to freindly with the players at Ipswich has cost you your job Paul.
Thanks for what you tryed to do at Ipswich and good luck in your future and if you do Manage another team try to be like Mick McCarthy and show them that you are the boss and not their freind.
You will always have a little peice in some of the Town fans hearts.

Jewell acted with dignity throughout his whole time managing town. He did an excellent job in clearing out the mess Keane left us with and the fruits of his labour may not been seen for some time. Elliott Hewitt, Aaron Cresswell and Tommy Smith are forming what will be the core of our defence for years to come, along with Scott Loach. Paul Taylor will be a great investment for us in the years to come, and should a number of these loans (N'Daw, DJ Campbell, Henderson?, Murphy) become signings in January, he would have left the club in a much better state than when he came in.

That said, I'm very happy with Merlin the Magician and hopefully he will be the one to get the best out of this squad.

warwick blue - "but can you not just sense that there is a whole new atmosphere at Portman Road now?"

You can say that, but - and I'm not taking anything away from Mick - we are now in pretty much exactly the same situation now as we were after Jewell's first few games. He did exactly the same as Mick has done and the 'atmosphere' is very similar.

PJ has left us with Scott Loach, Elliot Hewitt, Aaron Cresswell, Luke Chambers, JET and Paul Taylor all on long term contracts, so I thank him for that.

Yes, we must respect PJ for saying this and I am sure he is a decent bloke (not actually knowing him). But let's not forget the mess he got into not only this season but last season too.

Not to actually recognise we needed a proper right back was madness and he lacked tactical nouse in changing a game.

Watching Mick and tv on the sideline is a breath of fresh air and also what they do at the end of the game.

Yes, we will lose some games but we should embrace this managerial partnership cos they will move us forward.

I hope PJ gets another job and that he has learnt from his mistakes.

@footyblue well if you have been watching for 40 years you couldn't have been watching closely because we have had worst managers than PJ in that time. I know because I have been watching for over 40 years. PJ decent bloke not much of a tactician and perhaps a too nice of a guy. I wish success for the future.

I've no idea whether he is a nice man or not. Seems ok
He generally bought quite well although Bullard and Ellington both stand in the negative column, I think anyone fair can forgive buying Bullard on the circumstances.
Tactically fairly hopeless. Defensively completely hopeless.
The thing that stands out to me was his ability to say "the problem is X" and then do the opposite of whatever X was. X was usually sort out the defence. What he usually did was buy an attacking or wide midfielder. In fact there were times when watching him was like watching your son buying football cards... He'd disappear off to the shops clutching his money saying he needed a Terry Butcher and come back with four Bullards and an Ellington.
I regard myself as a loyalist to whoever the town manager is, but even I got tired of PJs excuses. An excuse is not an excuse if you have not done anything about the problem.

Wickedblue if you say there was a worse manager in our history please name all you people on here saying how wonderful Jewell was he single handed nearly took us down he was awful to some players I doubt any of you actually knew him.
Ask some of the staff at PR and they portray a different Jewell to the one you all believe and remember talk is cheap its what he did that counts

@footyblue - Harsh! I guess you must have been in a coma for John Lyalls reign then as statistically he was a worse manager.

eh ???? - John Lyall got Ipswich promoted as Champions in his second season !!!
I think some people are directly comparing win ratios in Old Div 1 / PL with Div 2 / Champ which is not comparing like with like.

Nice bloke obviously wanted the best for the club and continues to, just shame the job was too much for him. Hope he gets back into management soon, preferably at another Championship club above us! :)

bluesman:mm inherited a much worse squad then pj,we had like 8 loans,no right back, rock bottom of the league,a team with no confidence, yeah pj might have been a nice bloke but there's no hiding from the fact he's a sh1t manager and was very close to destroying this club.

He left the club in a desperate state and no better than when he took over so lets not get too sentimental.
Just glad we have moved on and lets just hope ME and Clegg have learnt from the last few seasons and MM can build on the current great run.

....... Really !!! - fact is PJ was never up to the job, and never would have been from day one.

Many posts on here are not just showing the 'decent' side of the Club i.e Support - but the all too 'soft' side - equally.

And how much of this topic / thread is fictitious anyway ? .....

However, thanks for very little PJ (and RK) - but I genuinely wish you both well.
Thankfully for us, somewhere else. (maybe!)

COYB -Onwards and Upwards - we have a real Manager now.

A very genuine comment from PJ there. Shame it didn't work out for him but thats football and it definitely was the time for a change. Onwards and upwards with Mick now

He helped Mick get the job? The blokes deluded.Having had to sit through his inexplicable team selections and tactics for 2 years, and endure some of the worst boring football in the history of the club, all whilst he was being paid a kings ransom, --I would rather he kept his big gob shut.

Garv - good point, there was a lift when Jewell took over; there's always the "new manager" bubble of course but I think that the transformation on the pitch under MM has more substance to it. Don't forget that this "honeymoon period" has included some appalling thrashings and still things are feeling so much better.

I feel so sorry for Paul Jewell who could not have tried harder to turn things around. Now, thanks to HIS signings and HIS recommendation to hire tricky Mickie, things are on the up but Mick McCarthy would be the first to admit that all it really needed was a bit of fine tuning and some Yorkshire grit to marinate Jewell's gems into a winning team.

The key point for me is that PJ believes there was a lack of investment in the squad, hence the need for loans. While this may be true it highlights the real defect in the whole of his managerial reign; ie his team building philosophy hinged on a constant turnover of players rather than improving existing players as individuals and as part of an effective team structure.

Still no-one accuse him of not trying. I believe he gave it his best shot but in the end it was not enough. What I can't forgive is the fact that he held on to his job when it was clear to all that it was not working and that there was no real chance of 'turning it around'.
