McGoldrick Confident Town Will Make Impact Next Year
Wednesday, 16th Jan 2013 06:00

David McGoldrick is confident Ipswich can make a major impact in the Championship next season as long as they can ensure their survival in the current campaign.

Bottom when boss Mick McCarthy took over 14 league games ago, the Blues now have a six-point cushion separating them from the bottom three.

McGoldrick admits he was puzzled by Town’s early-season form but believes there are much better times ahead under a manager he rates very highly.

He said: “There is a good squad here and there was even before Mick took over. I was surprised they didn’t do better but since Mick’s been here things have improved and there is a lot of confidence about the place.

“He’s sorted out the shape, brought in some new players and there might be more to come before the end of January that will help us even more to climb the table. Next season I can see us being successful.

“I think the bookies will give us a big chance of promotion based on the players we have here and the manager’s track record at this level.”

McGoldrick is hoping he can continue among the goals for Town after netting 17 times in 26 games on loan to League One outfit Coventry.

He added: “If I get the chances I will score goals for Ipswich. I’ve enough confidence in my ability to say that.

“I work hard and give it my all. I’m not electric quick but I wouldn’t say I was slow either. I can finish with calmness and my all-round game, including holding the ball up, is okay.

“Coventry wanted to keep me after the first month I was there but I decided I would keep my options open and when Ipswich came in for me I knew I had done the right thing.”

Well, we now know we've got a forward who can fire the bullets, all we need to do now is give him the ammunition!

"...I decided I would keep my options open and when Ipswich came in for me I knew I had done the right thing.”

Are his options still open with him only being at Ipswich on loan? I think we will sign him permanently in the summer, but I still worry he will go elsewhere (or demand higher personal terms) if he is a big hit.

@coyb99 we are much closer to relegation than the play offs so I'm glad Mick and the boys are talking about surviving this year rather than the play offs. That said the next 2 sides are both beneath us in the league and in Feb and March we have 3 home games and only 2 away games and none of those 4 away games are against top opposition. So I reckon the next 10 games should put us well clear of relegation and if we are within 4/5 points ? at the start of April then who knows.

The point about play offs

Before the Brighton game we were 6 points from bottom 3 and 8 off play off, now we are 6 points from bottom 3 and 12 off play offs. The top 8 teams seem to be pulling away would need high 70's to make play offs so we will need to win all our remaining games except 2.

But as we are the greatest team the world has ever seen I have to agree

There is so much positivity around the club at the moment, I can see players wanting to come to Ipswich next season! On that note I think Lee Martin will sign a contract.

I expect to see McGoldrick & other players busting a lung to stay here!

Mark i believe he has signed a two year deal starting July this year when he is a free agent, assume that he has signed a pre contract which tends to be the case on these occaisions. in this way he gets a signing in fee and we dont have to pay his current club to buy him.

But if he turns out to be useless (which I hope he's not) are we committed to signing him or can we back out?

17 goals in 26 games at any level is pretty decent. Always rated him and I predict good things from this young man in the months and years ahead! COYB's!!!!!!!

Just imagine McGoldrick replicating his Cov form and then partnering him with DJ Campbell up front *drools*. Might miss the Murphy style target man though.

I like the links with Harry Forrester (6 goals and 5 assists in 24 games) at Brentford and Anthony Wordworth from Col U (last 3 seasons: 11 goals, 5 goals and 13 goals from midfield) . These are the sort of players we need: midfielders with a strikers eye for goal and something to prove.

So is a pre-contract agreement legally binding, preventing either McGoldrick or ITFC from pulling out e.g. if the loan spell goes well/badly, or if he picked up a long term injury? Perhaps there are some conditions in the agreement, and I suspect we will never know.

From what I know (which is not alot :O) A contract is legally binding, where an agreement is not legally binding and agreed in good faith by both player & club, a gentlemans agreement so to speak.

An agreement will detail the bonus, fees, increments etc that the club will honor when official contract is signed. Only when official contract is signed then it becomes legally binding.

Thanks brian a mul, that's what I was thinking. From a quick Google search I can't see any examples of players reneging on pre-contract agreements*, and I wonder if the FA would have any input if they did (probably not).

* It was speculated Milan Jovanović might renege on a pre-contract agreement move to Liverpool after Benitez left in 2010, but he did sign in the end.
