Sheepshanks Targeted McCarthy
Monday, 6th May 2013 09:37

Former Town chairman David Sheepshanks has revealed that Mick McCarthy could have been manager of the Blues earlier in his career if he had had his way.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Sheepshanks said he targeted McCarthy during his time in charge at Portman Road: “I tried to get him in the past but was unsuccessful.

“He is one of the great managers of this era, a brilliant guy and it shows the importance of having the right leadership, right management and right coaching in any organisation.”

It’s believed Sheepshanks approached McCarthy about the possibility of becoming Town boss at the time of George Burley’s sacking shortly after the Blues’ relegation to what’s now the Championship, but McCarthy wasn’t keen on taking on a new role having been manager of the Republic of Ireland for six years. Joe Royle was the man who took over from Burley.

Wonder if that had happened where would we be now.
Would MM have been pushing for a place along side Sir Alf and Sir Bobby

Theobald you really havent a clue have you? Sheepshanks has always done what is right for this club, made the changes when necessary and got a multi millionaire interested in it. He trusted his managers and supported them in the best way he could. To know he was interested in Mccarthy speaks volumes of his credentials, a great man who loves the club and obviously still does.

It was interesting on the Wolves forum that the fans wrote they have some good players, but those players wanted to play for Mick rather than Wolves, leading to the club's relegation twice. That again underlines how highly players rate Mick, and the same is true of Terry. We are very fortunate to have them.

Sheepshanks made some mistakes which were obvious in hindsight, but at the time they were made were reasonable on the basis of the information available at the time.

Relegation in the same season as the collapse of the ITV Digital deal was at the heart of the problem, and losing Burley's number 2 Dale Roberts to cancer at the same time was crucial - we have seen this season how important Terry Connor is to the McCarty plan.

It's easy to look for someone to blame when things go wrong, but it's not always that simple.

choprawontcome i have more than a clue i see sheepshanks for what he really is.
somebody should have checked his back pocket when he left portman road.
they way he behaved in his recruitment of george burley was a disgrace.
got him to break his contract and then tried to sign him up without paying appropriate compensation.
colchester were skint in the bottom division when this happened.
it was a dirty thing to do and tells you all you need to know about the man

It shows what a good man Sheepshanks was the fact he was involved in the Football League and now England. He was Ipswich through and through and very proud he was at the club. Shame Alan Ferguson finally left too, small maybe on the larger scale of things but both hearts of the club, something that hasnt been the same since Marcus Evans (all the good things hes done albeit).

Well said theobald1985 . All this belated love for Sheepy is a disgrace. This man left many business's in this town in dire financial straits when we went into administration on his watch, Friends of mine were paid 5 p in the pound and a good mate lost over 20 grand due to this muppet. It's no good people blaming the manager. Sheepy as CEO carries overall responsibility for the club. This is the man who paid himself a £250,000 bonus when we got promotion. He is the archetypal spin doctor.

Sheepshanks only concern with ITFC was where it could get him ! He used ITFC as a career and power grab ! He used us to enhance his standing and get himself into the FA for his own glory ! He should never be allowed to be involved in club football at any level .

I also agree with theobald1985.
Would Sheepshanks have claimed to have targeted McCarthy if we'd have gone on to be relegated this season? He's inflating his own ego even now.
It was Sheepshanks that sanctioned the building of the new North (Sir Bobby Robson) stand and endorsed big money transfers on long term lucrative contracts - all major factors in our going into administration and the consequences that Fatcatevans mentions.
Sheepshanks should not regret appointing Joe Royle to follow Burley, the man worked miracles and ultimately saved this club from complete collapse.

theobald1985 I'm not sure you really understand just how committed to ITFC Sheepshanks was. For any chairman/CEO to stand on the terraces with the fans takes some guts and he did it more than once or twice.
I felt sorry for the local businesses that lost out but that it business and but for some sharp negotiations there wouldn't be an ITFC now for you to support.
As for the comments about the way we got Burley from Colchester that again is the way football works for better or worse and had he not wanted to come here Burley would have stayed put. You can't blame a chairman for making the offer. If someone offered you double or treble your wages to go to a bigger company and do the same job you would go wouldn't you?

Taking a club into administration is as low as you can go while at the same time taking over 200,000 a year out of the club for something the great cobbolds did for free!!!!!
It didn't have to be done it's what he chose to do because it's a underhand way of not paying your debts!! & clubs now lose points should they choose to do so. As for his involvement with the league etc it's not because of his skills that he's in these positions but due to his own self promotion to earn a wedge.

Well said Beattiesballbag. Carsey you are deluded . Like you Sheepshanks knows the price of everything but the value of nothing. Standing with the fans? Wow that's a hardship. The bottom line is under his charge we went into administration. No ifs or buts. He had no contingency plan for the unexpected. And because of the old boy network that prevails in this country be it in sport business politics he has come out smelling of roses.

Carley - administration was a nightmare - not all Sheepy's fault (ITV did going bust etc) but it has to be one of the worst negotiations of any club's Administration ever ... Local businesses (that could least afford it) got 5p in the pound whilst the banks & lenders (Barclays & Aviva/Norwich Union) kept the ENTIRE debt in our books!
If you are going to go into Administration, at least clear your debts... Sheepy's was so afraid of embarrassing himself in his position at the Football League (& the prospect of losing the Club's FL "share" i.e. the right to be a member of the League) that he didn't use the threat of us going out of business as the stick to negotiating a reduction in the £30m owed to the banks. The banks HAD to negotiate or risk getting nothing (the Club didn't even own the ground so had real value as collateral) - instead Sheepy's legged over the little guys & merely extended the repayment terms of the entire bank debt - thereby leaving the club in a hopeless long term debt spiral with no hope of ever reducing the debt, unless we got promoted - which was always going to be tough when Joe Royle had no budget to play with).
Marcus Evans did the deal that Sheepy's should have done - buying out the debt form a fraction of the total due - but worryingly for the Club, he's kept the total figure in the books as still owing to him plus huge amounts of interest which have rapidly doubled the amount owed to him). If we ever do get promoted to the £120m Premier League pot of gold, the strewn Mr Evans could pocket the entire debt pile now owed to him & sail off with an enormous windfall !
