Tranmere Keeper Town Target
Thursday, 13th Jun 2013 19:27

Out-of-contract Tranmere keeper Owain Fon Williams looks set to be the man competing with Scott Loach for the Town number one jersey during 2013/14. The Blues are understood to have offered terms to the 26-year-old Welshman, who was previously linked with a move to Portman Road in 2009 and again in the summer of 2010.

Penygroes-born Williams started his career with Crewe but moved on to Stockport in 2008 without making a senior appearance.

It was while with the Hatters — during which time he had a short spell on loan at Bury - that he attracted Town’s interest.

In January 2011 6ft 4in tall Williams moved on to Rochdale where he remained until the following summer when he joined Tranmere.

Williams has been capped by Wales at U17, U19 and U21 levels and has been included in full squads but so far without making his debut.

Elsewhere, Wycombe Wanderers winger Joel Grant is also amongst the Blues’ summer targets, according to Chairboys sources. The 25-year-old, who scored 11 goals in 2012/13, is out of contract at the end of the month. Grant, who has been capped by Jamaica at U20 level, was previously with Watford, Aldershot and Crewe.

Released Blues midfielder Andy Drury is again linked with a move to his former loan club Crawley, who Town will http://www.twtd.co.uk/ipswich-town-news/23058/town-travel-to-crawley-in-pre-seas in pre-season.

Meanwhile, new midfielder Cole Skuse was at Portman Road today having agreed a three-year deal after opting to leave Bristol City at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old told the club site: “Straight away you can see that this is a huge club. Walking around the offices and you can see that the walls are decked with photographs showing the history of Ipswich Town and it’s great to be a part of the club now.

“I’ve had a look around the town and the stadium today and I’m looking forward to meeting the lads when we return for pre-season. I’m eager to get going with Ipswich now.”

Town start their pre-season programme on Monday 24th June, although players will be dropping into the club during the previous week to be assessed before they get to work for the campaign ahead.

I looked him up on Wiki and found that TWTD missed a key piece of information:

"During a period of heavy snowfall in January 2013, an away fixture at Brentford was briefly stopped as Williams was pelted by snowballs thrown from the home supporters."

He's a good age and it's sensible to sign someone on a reasonable wage to compete with Loach I'd say.

I understand that Newcastle have released Steve Harper. He is a very experienced 'keeper.

Ha ha love the snowball story Mark!

Good competition for Loach although the article doesnt state whether he allowed his contract to run down or was it a club decision?

I've heard that he's been one of the best keepers in League 1 recently. If he does come here he will provide great competition for Loach but he won't be happy being no. 2 having played all of last season for Tranmere.

From the video he looks a good shot stopper but he spills everything :(

There must be better keepers out there, whenever I have seen him on tv he always drops a clanger and spills everything.

@ipswichbusiness - Steve Harper is a top bloke and would be a really good, experienced keeper at Town, but he's a big family man and wants to stay up here in the north east.

Shininywho; that's a pity. I had heard somewhere that Stave Harper was a good man. How about Mark Schwarzter (I hope that I have spelt his name correctly!)?

Think this could be a good addition. I'm not sure if he's any better than Loach already but at 24 has a long time to develop. I'd like to see us go for the Crewe goalkeeper.

I meant Brentford goalkeeper not Crewe!

I've just noticed that I managed to spell Steve "Stave". I really must learn to type!

to those of you wishing to spend money we clearly do not have, I seem to remember a certain Paul Lambert putting together a side of nobodies, has beens and cheapos a few years ago and look where that club is now. Loads of clubs signing up the freebies now and this will only increase with the implementation of FFP. It seems that MM putting together a squad and may well keep the few pennies he has for a couple of signings once and if, Chopra vacates the club along with JET.

He is actually quite good, did he let his contact run out or did tranmere not offer him a new one. If he ain't good enough for tranmere then he ain't good enough for us

That highlights reel is surely a joke. He doesn't catch a thing. Be better at volleyball.

Should never've let Lewis Price go imho..always been motm whenever he's been called up to play for Wales.

Still can't understand why we let ALB go too?...he was decent back-up.

Seen him play on a few tv games....always manages to drop a clanger I'm afraid....but then he is a decent shot stopper.

I think that YouTube clip should be entitled 'Lets get ready to fumble'

Perhaps we could buy him some stickier gloves.

The Fon vote closes at midnight.

I like this! Just watched the video, looks decent. Good strong hands, good reflexes, quick on his feet, good shot stopper but watches his catching at crosses and his command of the area like. Two things that have plagued some keepers at Town.

Positive news though. More gems from league one please!!

Anyone know what Joel grant from Wycombe is like?

A welsh Matteo Serini , a good shot stopper but can't catch a cold.....mind you most keepers cant catch these days !!!!
