Town Facing Competition for Keeper
Thursday, 20th Jun 2013 09:09

Town are facing competition from Blackpool and Bristol City for keeper Owain Fon Williams’s signature, while the Welshman’s current club Tranmere are still hopeful that the 26-year-old will stay at Prenton Park, according to reports this morning.

TWTD reported Town’s interest in the former Crewe, Rochdale and Stockport man a week ago with the Blues previously having been linked with moves for him in 2009 and 2010.

Williams, who has been capped by Wales at U17, U19 and U21 levels but is yet to make a senior appearance despite a number of call-ups, is expected to make a decision on his future before the weekend.

As we reported at the weekend, Town are also targeting a return for former loan keeper Stephen Henderson, whose opportunities at West Ham would be limited if he remained at Upton Park next season with the Hammers having added another keeper, Spaniard Adrian, to their squad this summer.

Scott Loach is currently the Blues' only senior keeper with Arran Lee-Barrett and Jason Brown having been released at the end of the season.

If the story about Henderson returning is true, then I can't see the Fon Williams being too excited at the prospect of being #3 choice.

I would definitely make Henderson the priority signing out of the two. Still don't know why we released ALB, he was more than good enough to be 3rd choice keeper.

Always thought this offer was a bit weird if Henderson was to return. Guess it depends on the details of Henderson's loan though. I'd like us to go for a young up and coming keeper. What's our under 18 keeper looking like?

I imagine Henderson is a backup plan should the Williams deal collapse. We don't need three first team keepers. Two and a young keeper snapping at their heels is ideal.

Bristol City have signed Fielding, a player I thought we should have gone in for so not sure Fon Williams would want to be 2nd choice at a League 1 side. I can understand the Blackpool link a bit more as Gilks is a bit older.

Fon Williams is a waste of space he is not even a second class keeper, at this club every player must be good enough to play first team football, others players should come through the ranks

Is Crowe good enough to be the third choice? I would always rather have a youngster as #3 if he's up to it–after all, the team can always bring in a loaner in a crisis.

As Bristol City have signed Fielding I suggest we go in for Tom Heaton a better option than calamity Fon Williams.

Agree we need a keeper, hopefully as back up to Loach. But don't see the need to bring in another 2 keepers. Give a youngster a chance on the bench if we need to. The Henderson/Loach situation still needs resolving. Haven't had a consistent long term keeper since Kelvin Davis.

What did Barrett ever do wrong, why not use a young keeper as third choice instead of fon Williams. Why would he want to be third choice.

Can't understand why we got rid of ALB and Brown..they were more than adequate back up to Loach.

Kesgraveblue57 how can you justify calling him a waste of space what has he ever done to you or us-when are fans like you going to realise thats its just not really on to talk about players or potential players like that.-i can see why with chopra but he is an extreme case but players who try and are just getting on with there job dont deserve comments like that. he has not even signed yet and already it starts.

regarding the keeper issue I think 2 is plenty and after that lets have a look at crowe.

how bad can he be- he has been chosen over loads of other youth keepers and is coached by good staff so he must be good enough for half a dozen games in an emergency

Town (@ or any other club) will always "face competition" for any player that is half decent. So no surprise there then.

The issue will be whether this player would be willing to join a Club where he has to fight for his place along with 2 other GK's. From what Ive read elsewhere this GK would only consider joining a Club where he was going to be # 1.

Based on this - and not any competition, Id say we are unlikely to be signing him.

well your family in liverpool need to get a grip then.
its a team game and fans are always looking for somebody to blame.

you could say he is a poor keeper in your opinion but a waste of space is not appropriate or justifyable.

The fans who threw snowballs at him would have been hoofed out if I was chairman.

decency costs nothing
