Town Confirm Tunnicliffe Loan
Friday, 26th Jul 2013 15:03

Town have confirmed the signing of Manchester United midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe on loan until January. TWTD revealed that the 20-year-old was close to joining the Blues yesterday and that he was at the club today to finalise his switch earlier this afternoon.

Tunnicliffe, Mick McCarthy’s 10th signing of the summer, trained with his new team-mates this morning and is set to be involved in the final friendly of pre-season at Notts County on Saturday (KO 3pm).

The midfielder, a member of the Red Devils' 2011 FA Youth Cup-winning side, says he is pleased to have joined the Blues, tweeting: "Delighted to have signed for Ipswich on loan."

He told the club site that Town boss Mick McCarthy was one of the main reasons he decided to join the Blues: “Ipswich is a big club but the deciding factor was the chance to work with Mick McCarthy.

“He has managed at international level and worked in the Premier League for a number of years.

“My reserve team boss Warren Joyce knows Mick well and he said he is straight down the line and good to play for.

“I’m looking forward to it. The reserves at United is a good level but I need to be playing games where there are three points at stake.

"David Moyes is happy for me to go out on loan and I know they will be watching how I do down here.”

Tunnicliffe, who has two years left on his contract at Old Trafford, would be up for sticking around beyond the initial half-season loan if all goes well: “If I’m playing here then I can’t see why I wouldn’t want to stay.

“I’ve got to get in the team first though and perform well. There’s a good squad here and I’ve got a fight for my place.”

Brighton were amongst a number of other Championship clubs also believed to be eyeing the England U16 and U17 international, who spent time on loan at Peterborough United during 2011/12 and at Barnsley last season.

Heywood-born Tunnicliffe plays in central midfield, an area where the Blues appeared to require further cover.

Speaking on Tuesday, Mick McCarthy said he was looking to add only one more player to his squad ahead of the start of the season at Reading a week on Saturday.

Tunnicliffe has made two sub appearances in the Capital One Cup for the Red Devils, in addition to 15 senior starts and 18 games from the bench for his loan sides.

He played for United’s reserves in their 1-0 friendly victory over Club Brugge last week, a game which was watched by the Town manager.

I hate loans generally, but can't really disagree with this signing(would rather it was for season though),can't be a mug playing for prem champs, got good pedigree, welcome to big micks revolution! Still think we might be light for goals in the squad, can't see mcgoldrick doing it on his own IMO.

yes, yes I'm sure he can play. The big question as yet unanswered is.... have we finally signed a player without a sleeve or a neck tattoo?

this is the first manager that has got his squad together BEFORE the season starts. MM is just great to have so like everyone i hope they get into their stride early and we see our side in the top half. Can't wait to see first home game.

Squad almost done, and we only have one loan player. Jewell says players didn't want to come here. Most success transfer window in god how many years, and Sky Sports actually give us a mention. Can't be much happier with the job MM and TC have done so far.

@manualthetis, couldnt agree more. im hoping we get some more fire power to assist mcgoldrick. I reckon he is worth at least 15 goals this season, murphy has been in good form in pre season, so should be aiming for at least 10, taylor is like a new signing and think he may be more creative, with an end product and im not totally sold on Nouble, but he is still young. Mick has done everything on a shoestring, with the paying up of jet and chopra's contracts the only real outlay. Hopefully evans will release some money for us to buy a top notch goal scorer!!! COYB see you at reading

gibbo. oh dear, I really cant believe theres ne1 on here still having a go at clegg. a man who completed the signing of more players than ne1 of his predecessors. wasn't his fault the players he was asked to sign by keans and jewell weren't ne good.

people on here still going on about us needing a 20 goal a season striker. while it would be nice it not necessarily needed. not 1 striker from hull or Cardiff got into double figures last season, yet they finished 1st and 2nd in the division.

Blues1, thats because they had goals from other areas of the team. They then didnt need a striker who could score 20 goals. Last season we didnt get enough goals from the midfield or wide areas, hopefully they will be able to chip in a bit more this season

Just watched a few youtube clips of him and he looks a real player. He fits the bill as a MM type of player with his workrate and ability to break up play in the middle of the park, but this lad has quality on the ball as well. Really excited about this one, the jigsaw is complete.

The squad is coming together nicely. I still think we need an attacking central midfielder and a striker but I'm happy with what we've got to start the season.

6/1 on getting promoted 20/1 to win the Championship - says it all about this league ( especially as QPR are favourites).

Agree with 'Thetisfanclub' we are a light upfront. Taylor could be vital.. if not make a cheeky bid for league one's in-form forward at the end of August..

Blues 1 it's more a case of the players he didn't sign like Charlie Austin who was offered less money then he was on playing for Swindon and Billy Sharpe who was offered a 1 year contract plus need I mention the Portsmouth players of January 2012, Steven Davies of derby the list goes on.
