Sharp Loan Link Unlikely
Wednesday, 4th Sep 2013 09:35

Town, Leeds, Doncaster, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday are all in the running to sign Southampton striker Billy Sharp on loan, according to some of this morning’s tabloids. Football League clubs are able to sign players on short-term loans of up to 93 days from next Tuesday.

Rumours claiming the Blues are interested in loaning the 27-year-old have been circulating for the last week or so, but appear to have little foundation with manager Mick McCarthy repeatedly having said he is not currently looking to add to his senior squad: “We’ve done our business.”

In addition, the Saints are reported to want Sharp’s destination club to pay his wages — reportedly £20,000 a week — in full, a figure which would be well beyond what the Blues would be willing to pay.

Sharp, who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, was a Town target during Paul Jewell’s time as manager back in the summer of 2011 while a Doncaster player.

The Portman Road crowd famously applauded Sharp’s goal in Rovers’ 3-2 victory over the Blues the following November shortly after the death of his new-born son Luey.

Sharp's loan at Forest last season wasn't as successful as would have been hoped. He did OK, but that was all. Once Billy Davies arrived he tended to overlook Sharp and they started getting better results

We need to take a good goal scorer on loan but, is Sharp that guy? He isn't that prolific.
After losing Jet, Chopra & Martin's high wages it's about time Evans dipped into his pocket to show some support to MM

I think he could be just the man, fans would love him and I'm unconvinced by anyone other than McGoldrick

Stick with what we have I say - especially when what we have includes a £1.5 million forward who has barely played and is almost back to fitness!

No loans this year please ITFC!

With our minimal spending in the summer we should go all out to getsharp on a seasons long loan with a view to a permanant deal. The way we applauded him at PR clearly meant something to him and would poss have some sway in his mind

If we have 'done our business' and we are 'unlikely' to go for him, what is the point in running this story? Feels like I am reading one of the many articles on Yahoo!

Would I pay 20k a week for this guy ? NO I most certainly wouldnt

We've only spent £20k as our transfer budget all summer so can't see us paying that every week! Would absolutely love him to play for us but Mr Evans won't be getting his wallet out i'm afraid.

I wonder what Mick's bonus is to keep us up this year?

Doesn't have to be Billy Sharp, but it's clear that we need more of a goal threat than currently exists. Hopefully Paul Taylor will get back to fitness and realise his potential but that is only one player.

Only McGoldrick of the current strikers seem up to the job and the lack of creativity and goals from midfield adds to the problem significantly. Still a major lack of pace in the team, and that is a big differentiator.

Old Clacton, you have it exactly. Pace is the quality we lack and as far as Sharp is concerned he is way beyond our means. This season is one of survival and consolidation.

Yep 5 games in - lets keep on slagging off McCarthy and Evans. I guarantee if we win the next game everything will be lovely again - at least till the next bad result!! Everyone was happy with the signings in the close season - now everyone at the club is being critisised. God Town fans are a fickle bunch. I have supported town for 40 years - SEE WHERE WE ARE AT XMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why all this speculation? He ain't coming. End of!

He aint that prolific?????????????????? Games 289, Goals 129 in the league. Looks pretty good to me. Would love to see him here but I can't see it and I wouldn't risk upsetting the apple cart by paying 20k per week for him.

Kirbmeister i wouldnt call it fickle, id call it fans having their optimism during pre season dashed by the lack of backing of mick in the summer. We can all see that this team is unfortunately not quite good enough to challenge for the top 6 due to the fact other teams have strengthened betrer. We need more creativity and a goalscorer, coz where are the goals going to come from??

Can't believe he's linked to us again. How many times has this happened over the last few years only to end in a dead end. It'd be nice but can't see it happening.

Still remember the round of applause we gave him when he scored against us having just lost his son though. One of the most poignant moments I can remember at a game.

There's no way we would ever pay a player £20.000 a week to play for us on loan? Everybody knows he will only be here to gain fitness and not play 4 the shirt...never going to happen...saying that DJ Campbell managed it and he became a fan favourite...now I'm thinking twice...until I think of ME opening his wallet...I'm 50/50 on this one...

In fact Keanish, you're wrong mate. This was 7 minutes ago saying Leicester failed in a bid to sign Doyle because he's still earning £40k a week!!

@chrismakin (whatever number) yes done the business as there is no more money to do anymore. Think MM is living in the real world alot more than you are.

Multiplescoregasms - you should complain and ask for your money back.

Would of been the sensible option if it wasnt for his high wages!! A shame, but hopefully with a bit of a confidence and with midfield sorted attacking wise our strikers will start to bag more goals
