McCarthy Delighted With Mings
Monday, 25th Nov 2013 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with home debutant Tyrone Mings, despite the Blues’ 2-1 defeat to Leicester at Portman Road on Saturday. The 20-year-old, who joined from non-league Chippenham Town last December, has started the last two matches at left-back in place of the suspended Aaron Cresswell.

“Ty’s great, he’s a really fine young fella and he’s a good player,” McCarthy said after Saturday’s match.

“He had a tough day playing against a really quick forward [Jamie Vardy] and I thought he handled it well.

“I didn’t take him off for any reason other than I thought we might get a bit more out of Hunty going forward. We were looking for a goal and, to be fair, he was feeling it, I think."

McCarthy agreed with the observation that Mings climbs even higher in the air than he did during his playing days: “I think he does, whether he heads it any better, I’m not sure about that. But he does most other things better than I did.”

Mings himself says he enjoyed his first experience of first team football at Portman Road: “I have loved every minute of it.

“To come in and play in front of my home crowd, was amazing, nothing compares to it. Obviously the result was not great but it was a good effort from everyone.

“We made a great start and controlled the game for the most part. We did everything right, we got in their faces and we started to do that again in the second half.

“But they got an early goal and the rest is history. We stopped doing what we were doing and they hit us on the break.

“We are not far behind the top teams. We are doing everything right as a team and there is not much in games. Perhaps we just need to be a bit more resilient and not give away goals as we did today.”

How has he found the step up to the first team during Cresswell’s enforced absence? “As funny as it sounds I don’t do anything really different to what I did before.

“It is just you have to do things quicker and you need to think faster. I still have a lot to learn but I like to think I can stay in the team.”

Regarding Town’s nemesis David Nugent, he added: “It is an incredible record. He is a goal threat and we kept him quiet in the first half. But goalscorers seem to be able to get goals out of nothing and he has done that.”

Cresswell will be available for next Saturday's game at Charlton having completed his two-game suspension for his red card after the home draw with Barnsley.

....Is Mick serious?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Mings was one of the worst performers on saturday, was subbed for Hunt in the second half as he looked like he was at least a half a yard behind play!

Mings seems like a really great lad, who will only get better with experience. Let's give him our support, and he could become an ITFC regular.

Kings is showing signs of a young Aron creswell, and was very good on Saturday. He played a big part in our goal with his run across the pitch giving it to chambers
So gave it to didsy and we all know the rest

Oscar, I think Mings did the same.

I thought Tunnicliffe was our worst performer Saturday followed by Tabb and Anderson then Mings.

Square pegs round holes is the problem. Natural right back needed , natural wide playes needed. Micks quote ,to be fair he had a difficult quick player in Vardy up against him , exactly Mick ,when are our wide players difficult to play against for opposition full backs , There left wing and right wing destroyed us with pace .

This is Nugents quote“The gaffer made two subs and to be honest it could have been any one of us," he said. "We played on the counter in the second half and we had a lot of pace which caused mayhem. In my opinion we have to look at wide players to cause problems with pace and crossing ability ,all to ofter our wide players are so deep as they are being controlled by opposition wingers or raiding full backs. Time will tell how our team evolves , but whilst we remain predictable we will struggle. One win in the last 6 tells its own story.

I keep wondering when we are going to get the start of a decent run in this league ?????
we need another DJ Campbell (who was our saviour last season) or somebody of his calibre to help McC because he is getting heavily marked now ?? although when he plays deeper he has more room !!!

I thought tunnicliffe was by far the worst on the pitch. Mings did ok. I like the lad too .

How has Anderson escaped criticism so far... by far the worst player in a blue shirt. Tunners and Skuse didn't offer anything when in posession and were bypassed more often that not.
I thought Mings looked decent, certainly didn't let anyone down

Four Center Halfs in the back four this is just crazy three of which are left footers, yes four Mings is not a left back

This is total tripe from MM. Mings was one of our worst players if not the worst saturday.

well over all i thought mings was ok, not brill but ok and for a young lad just coming in he certainly done better than some, aka anderson for one, i think we defo got the bum deal with him and jet,

and like others have said tunny didnt paint him self in glory when all the ball neither but also said the ball did keep going over there heads, how ever the back two was recieving the ball from them quiet alot so that will happen, he certainly didnt put him self about like hyam does and close the players down, which is what you need.

in my view our strongest line up with pace and width and strongest back four will be this

gerken
hewitt chambers smith cressy
taylor scuse then either wordsworth, hyam or tunny and hunt ( when fit)
didsy and murphy

i feel mariot when he returns should be our replacemnt striker, nouble should be sent out on loan to atleast div 2 if he does well then fair enough if he dont then get rid as he loses the ball to easy or always offside he done that alot when playing for the u21 against bristol city aswell. berra to me is a great cb but not at the expense of smith, i think MM is playing him as he is to good to sit on the bench how ever since he has came in and chambo has gone rb we have suffered for it,

on sat over all we had no one from the starting 11 except for didsy and murph on occasions who looked any sort of forwrd thinking threat which explained the half time stats at just a mere 36% possesion,

so come MM makes some bold moves and lets get playing again please

Agree with Keanish thought the midfield were all poor and Mings not much better but was up against a fast tricky winger with flair something MM has got rid of at Town or wont play .
He has to start playing with wing backs if he refuses to drop a centre back
Gerken
Chambers, Berra, Smith
Edwards ,Skuse, Hyam,Cresswell
Mcgoldrick,Taylor
Murphy
Fast players with natural width ,would also get our best crossers further forward ,surely MM can see this ?

I also thought Mings did ok considering how few games he has played in the first team.
Think MM is wrong to persist with Tabb and Anderson, they have had their chance, would like to see Hunt and Carlos given more game time. Not so sure about Tunnicliffe either, especially bearing in mind he goes back to Man U in new year. I believe Woody and Paul Taylor could be given more than just cameo appearances, and what is the point of signing Veseli and then hardly ever putting him on the bench let alone allowing him a little game time as a sub.

Perhaps as Mick was so angry about the performance he will make 2 or 3 changes for Charlton, and who knows may also change the formation from 442!

........ some moronic comments criticising Mings - from people who haven't a clue about the game.

But - all entitled to there opinion - however bizarre or unfair.

Well said blueboy1981 . The other crazy comments come from those who see Taylor as our "saviour" What on earth has he done to earn the misguided adulation some are giving him ?

It is very rare that I post a comment on TWTD, but I am getting so frustrated watching week in week out Anderson.
Am I the only person on this forum who cannot understand WHY we continue to play Anderson?
Please can anyone tell me what he gives to the team that say Edwards, Taylor, Hewitt or AN Other could not provide better on the right wing?
Anderson cannot tackle, he has limited pace, he cannot score goals, he provides very few assists, he does not attempt to header the ball....I could go on & on....
AAAArrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought Mings did some good things but he was also caught out far too much for my liking. Not unexpected given he is still learning his trade and playing out of position. I think he would benefit from going out on loan and playing regularly.

The number of players we have who are playing out of position is frankly alarming and shows the squad has no strength in depth. To be honest there are not many I would give a regular start to other than Cresswell, Smith, Chambers, Skuse and McGoldrick.

@Cookycrew - no your not the only one! Forest didn't want him nor did Bristol City so that must say something, I honestly feel I'd have Martin back in place of him (at least he put a shift in although couldn't score a goal to save his life).
