McCarthy Prepared to Wait on Loans
Friday, 18th Jul 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy is prepared to play a waiting game to see which promising Premier League youngsters become available for loan later in the summer.

McCarthy says he’ll set aside some of his summer budget for loans as and when they become available: “I want to keep our powder dry a little bit because there might be something come up that we can do and if we’ve done all our work and all our business and then we can’t do it, we’d be rueing the fact.”

He says Premier League managers will take their promising youngsters away on their pre-season tours with some of their star names taking a break after the World Cup and then make decisions on whether they want to send them out on loan later on down the line.

He added: “Players who have played in the World Cup will be getting a rest and, a bit like me with Freddie Veseli, I’ll use him now and then if I don’t need him then I’ll let him go out on loan. Likewise with anyone else where that might be the case.”

Some fans whinge about loanees, but let's not forget the impact some of them have had in recent years. Joniesta, Bullard, Dos Santos...

Those 3 loans were influential, but sadly they are overshadowed by the sheer number made in desperation by previous regimes, that's why the image of loanees is tarnished.
MM used the system frugally to great effect last season, i think there were a couple of starting line-ups that had no loanees in. Contrast that to some RK/PJ games where some loanees were left on the bench or not even in the squad because the maximum permitted were already on the pitch!

Jesse Lingard is one he's trying to sign. Watch this space!

Bizman i'd be buzzing if we signed lingard on loan, he's the sort of midfielder we need, creative and can chip in with goals. Fingers crossed

Have just read Paul Scoles piece in the Manchester Evening News from 27 June - he reckons Lingard should have been given a chance in the 1st team at Old Trafford last season ahead of Januzaj. If he is that good and van Gaal agrees I can't see Utd letting him go out on loan again.
But then again never say never.........

O HARA,has too much baggage, would not fit into Mick's plans.!

BlueandTruesince82 added 12:05 - Jul 18
O'Hara claims to be willing to take a paycut, he also says that having been frozen out at wolves he is keen to get his career back on track and he feels the perceptions of him are wrong. If true I would take a punt but that is a BIG if

I can't believe some Ipswich fans want O'Hara, awful player

O'Hara is NOT an awful player, but I agree he has had issues, as Mick knows him I'd trust the gaffers judgement on that one!!

We'll just have to wait and see, like the big man say's!

Any chance of getting Wickham on loan?

Unless a player is special (or we're desperatley short of players) then I don't really like loans. Would much prefer if MM looked towards the U21s.

Matt in London - I think that's what mick means by setting aside a bit of the budget for them.

Could do with a few under performers stepping up, or moving on before we buy

Ruben Lameiras from Spurs would be a great loan signing.

Firstly, we have to be realistic. Most championship clubs will need to top their squads up with loans. What I am struggling with, is we are at least one permanent player light from the squad which finished last season (senior players), whilst clearly their was a budget for loans last year. I had obviously wrongly assumed that the Cresswell money would be in addition to strengthen the squad. However it looks like spending the money on loans ... Which we did last year without the money anyway!

Jas as I said yesterday I think we might yet see another perm or 2 added. The season hasn't kicked off yet.

The cressie money is in the playing budget IE going towards wages, now had we signed hendo that's 5k a week that needs to be found so it depends on who those players are as to how much gets used.

I think Micks dry powder might be kept that way for Jan as well, if we are sitting pretty or there abouts come jan maybe Mick wants to bolster if needed.

I could be talking tosh but that's my feeling. In terms of the budget so many things effect it, including the wages of individuals signed. I think the clubs policy is to pay bigger wages and smaller fees in light of all the frees available and in the current market, personally I think that makes sense

So those who think loans are a bad idea, reasons why they are GOOD;

Jonny Williams
Dos Santos
DJ Campbell

etc…the list goes on

also...
O'Hara would fit in well, good passer, good vision and good at free kicks.

Blue and true - we had a budget last year which included more permanent players and loans. This was without the Cresswell money . End of really!! Now the Cresswell money is being used to sign loans, which we budgeted for last year. It's typical ITFC pulling the wool over the fans eyes again. Yes, we can pay fees we are told ... Now, it's no fees. Now the Cresswell money will pay for loans. Loans we funded last year anyway! Now, I don't blame ME for pocketing the money received ... He has spent millions. But they should be up front about it. Anyone can see we funded loans without Cresswell money last year so it's nonsense to suggest otherwise.

Sorry jas got to disagree. You are ignoring too many other factors that effect the budget. Last yr for example big earners like chops were movedo . We dont know what those signed this year are on, how big the sigining on fees are. You are not allowing for other costs.

The money is there for Mick to use ad he sees fit. We have added 5 perm signings already and the season hasnt kicked off yet. Your pov whilst understandable is far to black and white.

eg pay 100k for a player or use said 100k to pay a freebies wages for a season. These are the choices made by manager and board. In theory paying higher wages equals better players (not always in practice mind).

My point is this its not as simple as the money is thete only for loans. It is thete to be uteilised in the best way and if mm feels a youngster who isnt grtting game time, or anyone else for thst matter offers better options thanothers iI'm happy for him to use it that way. I would be surprised if we have more than 2 or 3 loaness at any one point compare that to 2 or 3seasons ago.

I dont expect you to change your mind but thats my take. Rather more to it really

"The cressie money is in the playing budget IE going towards wages"

that is not true. it will disappear as did the money from the sales of walters and Wickham. It is also ridiculous to talk of paying higher wages when all the talk is about cutting the wage bill. Remember players contract usually run for more than one season. just as ridiculous as talking about spending money in january.

There is NO money, that is why MM is talking about loanees. Short term gap fillers.

Worryingly we will have played 5 games before these loanees can be brought in, with four fairly tough games - two PL relegated clubs and two play off place clubs.

Of more concern is why are these incoming youngster not our own, what has happened to our youth set up, something ME promised to continue ?

D J Campbell only scored two outfield goals, the others were pens and a hand ball.
